The redesigned 2025 Subaru Forester makes the improvements many longtime shoppers wanted: a quieter cabin, a more composed ride and a better-finished interior, while retaining the visibility and practical shape that define the model. But the gasoline version’s 180-hp engine is still modest, and this first drive cannot answer long-term ownership questions. Whether it is the Forester you have been waiting for depends on how much you value refinement over stronger acceleration.
What changed in the 2025 redesign?
The 2025 Forester is the sixth-generation model. Subaru revealed it in November 2023, describing a revised structure with 10% greater torsional rigidity than the outgoing model, supported by additional welding and adhesives. That percentage is Subaru’s manufacturer claim, not an independent measurement from the first-drive reviews. The gasoline range at launch comprised Base, Premium, Sport, Limited and Touring trims.
On the road, the most noticeable change reported by Consumer Reports, Edmunds and MotorTrend was refinement rather than a new driving character. Their short evaluations described a quieter cabin and a more composed ride; Consumer Reports also highlighted outward visibility, a functional layout and roomy interior. Those are publication impressions from first drives, not long-term ownership findings.
Subaru’s April 2024 launch announcement also described a 39% reduction in the rate of noise attenuation from the roof panel. That is the manufacturer’s specific measurement language; it should not be read as a general claim that cabin noise fell by 39%.

How does the gasoline Forester drive?
180 horsepower is adequate, not brisk
The launch gasoline Forester uses a 2.5-liter four-cylinder BOXER engine rated at 180 hp and 178 lb-ft, paired with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). These are Subaru specifications. Reviewers found the power sufficient for routine driving but not especially lively: Consumer Reports and Edmunds characterized acceleration as modest, while MotorTrend said the engine felt short on power with occupants and gear aboard.
That distinction matters if your regular driving includes steep grades, short highway on-ramps or a full cabin and cargo area. The first-drive evidence supports calling the gasoline Forester usable, not quick; it does not establish a precise acceleration time or guarantee how it will feel in every loading or road condition.

Ride, visibility and everyday utility
MotorTrend’s Montana event drive and Consumer Reports’ evaluation both praised the quieter, more composed experience. Consumer Reports also noted the broad outward visibility and roomy, functional cabin—qualities that help the Forester remain easy to place and practical in daily use. Subaru lists 8.7 inches of ground clearance and roof rails as standard on the redesigned gasoline models.
All gasoline trims have Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive and the latest EyeSight driver-assistance system listed as standard equipment in Subaru’s April 2024 launch announcement. The announcement does not mean every convenience or safety feature is identical across trims; check the equipment list for the specific vehicle you are considering.

Which 2025 Forester versions are redesigned?
The nameplate’s 2025 offerings are not all the same generation or powertrain. The redesigned gasoline range, the Wilderness and the later-announced Hybrid serve different priorities:
| Version | Powertrain and output | Ground clearance or capability | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gasoline (Base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Touring) | 2.5-liter four-cylinder, 180 hp and 178 lb-ft; CVT | 8.7 inches; standard roof rails | Everyday use, visibility, standard AWD and practical cabin utility |
| Wilderness | Gasoline; the cited Subaru announcement does not state a different horsepower figure | 9.2 inches of ground clearance; 3,000-lb towing capacity; all-terrain tires | More clearance and a utility-focused setup; these figures apply to Wilderness, not the other trims |
| Hybrid | Hybrid system, 194 total system horsepower | Not stated in Subaru’s cited Hybrid announcement | Shoppers prioritizing the hybrid powertrain and Subaru’s claimed city-economy improvement |
Subaru’s November 2024 Wilderness announcement says that version is based on the previous-generation Forester, despite its 2025 model-year designation. Its 9.2 inches of clearance, all-terrain tires and 3,000-lb towing capacity are Wilderness-specific; do not assume they apply to the redesigned gasoline trims.

Subaru announced the Hybrid range in February 2025, after the gasoline launch. The company specifies 194 total system horsepower and claims up to 40% better city fuel economy than the non-hybrid. The economy figure is Subaru’s comparison, not an independently observed result in the first-drive sources discussed here. The first-drive accounts from Consumer Reports, Edmunds and MotorTrend do not provide a direct, like-for-like driving comparison among gasoline, Wilderness and Hybrid versions.

Subaru’s November 2023 reveal described an 11.6-inch infotainment display with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as available, not universal across the gasoline lineup. The Base trim uses dual 7-inch displays. Confirm the screen and other equipment on the exact trim and vehicle listing rather than assuming every 2025 Forester has the larger display.

Standard AWD and EyeSight were part of Subaru’s April 2024 launch announcement for the redesigned gasoline models. Equipment details can differ by trim, option package and variant; the announcement does not establish that each driver-assistance or convenience feature is standard on every version.
What did the 2025 Forester cost?
Prices depend on which announcement and date you use, and these figures are reference MSRPs rather than dealer quotes. Subaru’s April 4, 2024 launch announcement listed the redesigned gasoline Base at $29,695 before destination. Its February 6, 2025 Hybrid announcement listed a $34,995 starting MSRP, and its November 22, 2024 Wilderness announcement also listed a $34,995 starting MSRP. Subaru’s current model page listed Base at $29,995, Wilderness at $36,285 and Premium Hybrid at $36,595; these figures were observed in the source notes, which do not specify whether they include destination.
Because the launch and current-page figures differ, use a dated source when comparing MSRPs and confirm the destination charge, dealer pricing and available incentives for the vehicle and location you are shopping. Subaru’s current model-page prices are time-sensitive.
What this first drive can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports’ first-drive coverage was updated December 30, 2024; Edmunds and MotorTrend published their first-drive accounts on May 6, 2024. These are short evaluations, including event drives, and they provide useful impressions of refinement, power and practical design. They do not establish long-term reliability, owner satisfaction or real-world fuel economy across conditions. Consumer Reports’ completed road test is a separate, later evaluation of a Premium trim, not a long-term ownership verdict.

For a shopper deciding whether the redesign addresses the old model’s feel, the early verdict is favorable on quietness, ride composure and cabin usability. The main compromise remains the gasoline engine’s unhurried response. A test drive in the trim and powertrain you intend to buy is the best way to judge whether that trade-off works for your routes and load.
