The 2025 MINI Cooper Convertible keeps the familiar small-car, open-top formula, with a fabric roof designed for quick operation and a choice of two turbocharged four-cylinder engines in the U.S. The Cooper S adds 40 hp and a quicker manufacturer-quoted 0–60 mph time; both versions make the same compact-car compromises, including limited cargo room. Published first-drive coverage describes an evolution rather than a reinvention, but the specifications and reviewer impressions are distinct: the figures below come from MINI, while driving observations are attributed to the outlets that reported them.
What changed for 2025?
The 2025 Convertible carries forward the recognizable MINI look and power-operated fabric roof, while the U.S. lineup pairs both trims with a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder. MotorTrend’s first-drive review describes the roof mechanism and trunk optimization as carryovers that already worked well, and notes the base engine’s increased output. That is the publication’s assessment, not a claim that every owner will experience the car the same way. MotorTrend’s first-drive review focuses on continuity: the update preserves the open-top MINI character rather than changing what kind of car it is.
The main decision is therefore straightforward: choose the Cooper for the lower announced launch price and adequate quoted performance, or the Cooper S for more power and quicker quoted acceleration. The retractable roof and rear seating make the MINI a different proposition from a two-seat roadster.
Cooper or Cooper S: what do you get for the price difference?
BMW Group’s U.S. announcement on November 8, 2024 listed launch MSRPs of $33,950 for the Cooper Convertible and $37,200 for the Cooper S Convertible, each plus $995 destination and handling. The Cooper S launch MSRP was $3,250 higher before destination. MINI supplies the output and acceleration figures; they are manufacturer specifications, not independent instrumented test results. The 40-hp and 37-lb-ft advantage, along with a 1.2-second quicker quoted 0–60 mph time, makes the S the performance-oriented choice on paper. Whether that difference is worth the launch-price premium depends on how much you value stronger response, since the source set does not provide independent acceleration, handling, or braking measurements for this model. How useful is the power-operated roof?
MINI says the electrically operated fabric top takes 18 seconds to open fully at speeds up to 18.6 mph and 15 seconds to close. It also has a partial-open, sunroof-like mode. MINI’s FAQ gives that opening as up to 15.7 inches; the launch release rounds it to 16 inches, so the more precise FAQ figure is used here. The quick, low-speed operation makes the roof more than a parked-car feature: a driver can open it when conditions allow without needing to stop first. The fabric top is also central to the car’s appeal, but open-air driving brings the usual exposure to weather and wind. MINI describes a wind deflector that locks behind the front seats and reduces wind noise and turbulence; the available information does not establish whether it is standard equipment or a separate purchase.
How much room is there for passengers and luggage?
MINI quotes 160 liters (5.65 cubic feet) of luggage capacity with the roof open and 215 liters (7.59 cubic feet) with it closed. The difference reflects the packaging compromise of a compact convertible: roof position affects the space available, and neither figure suggests a car intended for bulky loads. Check how the opening and cargo shape work with your own bags if luggage capacity matters.

The Convertible does retain rear seats, distinguishing it from a two-seat roadster. Cars.com’s comparison of sporty compact alternatives notes that those cars generally lack a retractable roof, while the Mazda MX-5 offers a more focused rear-wheel-drive roadster character but gives up the MINI’s rear seats and added practicality. - Consider the Convertible over a two-seat roadster if a retractable roof and rear seats matter more than a more focused two-seat layout.
- Look elsewhere or inspect carefully if you regularly carry large loads; MINI’s published luggage figures are modest, especially with the roof open.
