2025 Mazda MX-5 RF review: Buy the soft top unless you specifically want the hardtop

The 2025 Mazda MX-5 RF looks like a coupe but remains a cramped, noisy convertible. Here is why the lighter, cheaper soft top is the better default—and when the RF still makes sense.

Buy the soft top. The 2025 Mazda MX-5 RF is attractive and enjoyable, but its retractable fastback roof adds cost, weight, complexity, and visibility compromises without turning the two-seat Miata into a quiet or spacious coupe. The RF is worth choosing only when you specifically want its fastback styling, powered roof, and more enclosed roof-up cabin.

For most drivers, the soft-top MX-5 delivers a more complete open-air experience, better visibility, lower cost, and a closer connection to the lightweight rear-wheel-drive roadster formula.

The short verdict

For most buyers, the 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata soft top is the better car. It is lighter, less expensive, more open when the roof is down, easier to see out of, and closer to the simple rear-wheel-drive roadster idea that makes the Miata special.

The RF is not a bad MX-5. Its retractable fastback roof looks excellent, operates at the push of a button, and gives the cabin a more enclosed feel when closed. Choose it if you specifically want that design and powered roof. Do not choose it merely because you expect a quiet, spacious, fixed-roof grand tourer: the RF remains a small, noisy, cramped convertible with a tiny trunk.

In other words, the hardtop does not ruin the Miata, but it adds weight, cost, complexity, and compromises without changing the car into something fundamentally different. The soft top is the purer and usually smarter buy.

What the 2025 MX-5 RF is

RF stands for Retractable Fastback. It is not a conventional hardtop convertible whose entire roof disappears into the trunk. The powered roof opens a large section above the occupants, but the fixed rear buttresses remain in place. Those buttresses create the RF’s distinctive fastback silhouette and more coupe-like appearance, while also restricting rearward and over-the-shoulder visibility.

The RF uses the same basic MX-5 formula as the soft top: two seats, a front-mounted naturally aspirated engine, rear-wheel drive, and a short six-speed manual gearbox. Mazda’s U.S. specifications list a 2.0-liter Skyactiv-G four-cylinder producing 181 horsepower at 7,000 rpm and 151 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm. The engine’s stated rev limit is 7,500 rpm.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A six-speed manual is the enthusiast choice and is standard on Sport and Club models. The Grand Touring can also be ordered with a six-speed automatic transmission and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters. Sport and Club trims are manual-only.

How the RF roof works

Mazda says the roof opens or closes in approximately 13 seconds using a center-console switch. The owner’s manual is more specific about the operating conditions: the car must be stopped, and the system stops if the vehicle exceeds 10 km/h, or about 6.2 mph. The trunk must also be closed for the closing procedure.

That makes the RF more convenient than manually unlatching and folding a fabric roof, but it is not a roof you can casually operate at a stoplight while creeping through traffic. Mazda also warns against operating it in strong wind, opening it while wet, or driving with it partially open. If the roof will not close electrically, Mazda provides an emergency manual-closing procedure and directs the owner to have the car inspected by an authorized dealer.

Soft top versus RF: the differences that matter

Consideration Soft top RF
Roof design Manually operated fabric roof Electronically operated retractable fastback roof
Roof-down experience More completely open, with fewer visual obstructions Open above the occupants, but fixed rear buttresses remain
Roof-up character Still feels like a lightweight roadster More enclosed and coupe-like, but not a quiet fixed-roof car
Weight and complexity Simpler and lighter Additional roof structure, motors, and mechanism
Visibility Better over the shoulder More restricted by the buttresses and fastback structure
Price Lower in comparable trims Higher, although RF Club equipment narrows the value gap
Best reason to buy Maximum open-air involvement and value You genuinely prefer the design and powered roof

Why the soft top is the better default

1. It delivers more of the original Miata idea

The MX-5 is fundamentally a lightweight, open-air roadster. The soft top exposes the cabin more completely when lowered, and the act of opening it is simple enough that you are more likely to use it whenever the weather cooperates.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The RF provides open-air driving, but it does not remove the visual structure around the occupants. The fixed buttresses remain beside and behind the cabin, so the experience is closer to opening the roof section of a fastback than removing the roof from a traditional roadster. Road & Track’s 2025 RF Club test makes the same broad distinction: the soft top is the purer expression of the Miata formula, while the RF is a charming but heavier and more complicated alternative.

2. The extra hardware matters in a small sports car

The RF’s roof structure and electric mechanism add mass to a car whose appeal depends heavily on lightness and immediacy. Independent specifications place a 2025 RF Club manual at approximately 2,469 pounds. The exact difference between configurations depends on trim and equipment, but the important point is not a particular number; it is that the RF carries more hardware in a car designed around having as little of it as possible.

More components do not automatically make the RF unreliable. The available research does not establish a model-year-specific RF failure rate, and it would be irresponsible to claim that every RF will develop a roof problem or leak. The fair ownership observation is narrower: an electrically operated retractable roof has more parts that may eventually require adjustment or repair than a manually operated fabric roof.

3. The RF costs more without becoming a luxury coupe

The RF feels more substantial with the roof closed, but it does not transform the MX-5 into a spacious or serene long-distance car. Road-test coverage from Road & Track and Edmunds still describes the RF as noisy at highway speeds, tight inside, and limited by a very small trunk. With the roof open, reviews have also noted wind buffeting.

That makes the RF a poor choice if the underlying expectation is a miniature grand tourer. It is still a compact sports car with limited storage, a busy highway cabin, and two seats. The rigid roof changes the look and the operating convenience; it does not erase the compromises of the MX-5 platform.

4. The fixed buttresses hurt visibility

Edmunds lists poor over-the-shoulder visibility among the RF’s drawbacks. This is more important than a styling complaint. A small sports car already has a low seating position and limited sight lines. The RF’s fixed structure makes lane changes and tight maneuvering less transparent than they are in the soft top.

You can adapt with the mirrors and extra care, but buyers who regularly deal with crowded urban streets, narrow parking spaces, or frequent lane changes should take the RF for a careful visibility test before signing anything.

5. The roof-down experience is less open

If your main reason for buying a convertible is the unobstructed sensation of open air, the soft top wins decisively. The RF’s buttresses continue to frame the cabin, and the roof design can create turbulence when open. The RF still provides genuine wind-in-the-hair driving, but it is not as exposed or visually airy as the fabric-top car.

What the RF does better

The fastback design

The RF is the visually special MX-5. Its fastback profile, fixed rear buttresses, and available contrasting roof give it a more distinctive presence than the soft top. For some buyers, that styling is not a compromise; it is the entire reason to choose the RF. No spreadsheet can invalidate that preference.

Push-button roof operation

The powered roof is genuinely convenient for drivers who frequently alternate between enclosed and open driving. It takes roughly 13 seconds and avoids the physical unlatching, folding, and stowing required by the fabric roof. Just remember that the car must be stopped, the trunk must be closed for the closing process, and Mazda places specific limits on wind, moisture, and partially open operation.

A more enclosed roof-up cabin

The rigid roof can feel more protected and coupe-like when closed. That may matter to owners who park outside, drive in colder or wetter climates, or simply prefer a hard roof over fabric. It is a legitimate use-case advantage, provided you do not confuse it with the sound insulation, space, and all-weather practicality of a true fixed-roof coupe.

More standard equipment on the RF Club

The RF Club includes the Brembo/BBS/Recaro package as standard. At the original published pricing, the equivalent soft-top Club could be fitted with that package for $4,900. That equipment difference narrows the apparent price gap between the two Club models. It does not eliminate the cost of the RF roof, and buyers who do not want the Brembo brakes, BBS wheels, and Recaro seats should not treat the standard package as free value.

2025 pricing and trim comparison

Mazda’s U.S. launch pricing for the 2025 model year was as follows:

Model Launch MSRP Transmission
Soft-top Sport $29,530 Six-speed manual
Soft-top Club $33,030 Six-speed manual
RF Club $40,850 Six-speed manual
Soft-top Grand Touring manual $34,830 Six-speed manual
RF Grand Touring manual $37,550 Six-speed manual
Soft-top Grand Touring automatic $35,750 Six-speed automatic
RF Grand Touring automatic $38,520 Six-speed automatic

Mazda later announced a $300 MSRP increase for select 2025 MX-5 models effective September 3, 2025. The 35th Anniversary Edition was excluded. The figures above are therefore launch MSRPs, not a promise of the price on every remaining car. Check the vehicle’s build date, window sticker, dealer listing, destination charge, options, and current inventory price before comparing deals.

Which trim makes the most sense?

Soft-top Sport: The value choice for buyers who want the basic MX-5 experience and do not need the Club’s performance equipment.

Soft-top Club: The enthusiast default. It combines the lighter, more open body style with a manual transmission and is the logical starting point for buyers who care most about the driving experience. Add the Brembo/BBS/Recaro package only if those particular upgrades are worth the additional cost.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

RF Club: The performance-oriented RF. Its standard Brembo/BBS/Recaro equipment explains much of its higher price, but it remains the heavier and less open version. Buy it because you want the RF body and powered roof, not because you assume it is automatically the best-equipped bargain.

Grand Touring soft top: The comfort-focused choice for buyers who prefer additional convenience and driver-assistance equipment over Club performance hardware. It also preserves the classic convertible experience.

Grand Touring RF: The right answer when the RF’s fastback body is non-negotiable and you want Grand Touring comfort and safety equipment. Mazda says manual Grand Touring models receive the front shock-tower brace, Bilstein dampers, induction sound enhancer, DSC-Track mode, and asymmetric limited-slip differential associated with the Club specification. That makes the manual RF Grand Touring a particularly sensible way to combine the RF design with the relevant performance hardware.

Driving, engine, and fuel economy

Both body styles use the same 181-hp naturally aspirated 2.0-liter engine and rear-wheel-drive layout. The manual gearbox suits the car’s character better than the automatic for most enthusiast buyers: it keeps the driver involved and makes the high-revving engine part of the experience. Consumer Reports and other independent reviewers likewise favor the manual as the more engaging configuration.

The RF’s additional mass does not destroy its handling appeal. It remains nimble, responsive, and enjoyable. The accurate criticism is that it is slightly less aligned with the MX-5’s lightweight ideal—not that it becomes dynamically poor. Without a specific instrumented test for identical 2025 configurations, there is no reason to claim a precise acceleration penalty.

Mazda’s published EPA estimates for the 2025 RF are:

  • RF manual: 26 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, 29 mpg combined
  • RF automatic: 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, 29 mpg combined

Those are EPA estimates, not guaranteed real-world results. Driving style, traffic, temperature, tire pressure, and the amount of highway driving will affect actual fuel economy.

Practicality and ownership

The RF is a two-seat sports car with a very small trunk. Neither roof style makes the MX-5 suitable for family duty or large loads. Plan luggage around soft bags and short trips rather than standard suitcases and long vacations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The roof mechanism also imposes operating discipline. Do not operate it in strong wind, do not open it while wet, and do not drive with it partially open. If the electric system cannot close the roof, use Mazda’s emergency procedure only as directed and arrange an inspection by an authorized dealer. These instructions are reasons to understand the mechanism, not proof of a known universal defect.

Useful accessories, without pretending they fix the car’s limitations

RF buyers who store the car outdoors may reasonably compare a 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF car cover. Confirm that the cover is designed for the RF body style and the specific model year; a generic Miata cover may not account for the RF’s fastback shape, mirrors, antenna, or roof configuration.

For the small trunk, a Mazda MX-5 cargo net and cargo tray are more useful than appearance-focused accessories. Mazda lists both categories, and the genuine cargo net is documented for 2016–2025 MX-5 models. Verify RF fitment and the exact included hardware on the individual listing before ordering.

Interior protection is another sensible, task-specific purchase. Buyers can compare 2025 Mazda MX-5 floor mats, but should confirm RF compatibility rather than assuming that every 2025 Miata mat fits every trim. OEM products and vehicle-specific aftermarket products are preferable to universal mats that can shift around the pedals.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Less essential but still reasonable additions include Mazda MX-5 wheel locks and a roadside-assistance kit. These do not improve the RF’s driving experience, but they address basic ownership concerns. Mazda’s genuine accessory catalog also includes covers, mats, cargo protection, wheel locks, splash guards, and related equipment for buyers who prefer model-specific fitment.

Do not treat a generic roof controller, roll-bar solution, or other RF modification as a default purchase. The available evidence establishes the roof’s operating limits, but not the fitment, safety, warranty effect, or long-term suitability of any particular aftermarket controller or structural modification for every 2025 car.

Who should buy which MX-5?

  • Buy the soft-top Club if you want the most open-air involvement, lower mass, manual transmission, and direct connection to the classic Miata formula.
  • Buy the RF Club if you genuinely prefer its fastback design, want the powered roof, value a more enclosed roof-up cabin, and would otherwise choose the Brembo/BBS/Recaro package.
  • Buy the soft-top Grand Touring if comfort and driver-assistance features matter more than Club performance hardware, but you still want the unobstructed convertible experience.
  • Buy the Grand Touring RF if the RF appearance is non-negotiable and you want the additional Grand Touring equipment. Choose the manual if you want Mazda’s associated Club performance hardware and the more engaging drivetrain.

Final verdict: the RF is a preference purchase

The 2025 Mazda MX-5 RF is handsome, enjoyable, and still unmistakably a Miata. Its fastback roof is a real design statement, and its push-button operation is genuinely convenient. But its compromises are structural: it is heavier, more expensive, less open, and harder to see out of than the soft top, while remaining noisy and cramped enough that it never becomes a true coupe or grand tourer.

That is why the soft top should be the default recommendation. It gives you more of the MX-5’s best qualities for less money. The RF makes sense when you want the RF specifically—not merely a Miata with a roof.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2025 Mazda MX-5 RF a true hardtop convertible?

No. RF means Retractable Fastback. Its powered roof opens in about 13 seconds, but fixed rear buttresses remain in place, so it is not a fully retractable hardtop that disappears into the trunk.

Can you open or close the 2025 MX-5 RF roof while driving?

No. Mazda’s owner’s manual says the vehicle must be stopped, and the roof operation stops if the car exceeds 10 km/h, or approximately 6.2 mph. The trunk must also be closed for the closing procedure.

Is the 2025 MX-5 RF faster than the soft top?

Both use Mazda’s 181-hp 2.0-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder and rear-wheel drive. The RF carries additional roof structure and mechanism, so it is less aligned with the Miata’s lightweight ideal, but an exact acceleration difference depends on the tested trim and configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Which 2025 Mazda MX-5 trim should I buy?

Choose the soft-top Club for the most direct, open-air enthusiast experience. Choose the RF Club for the fastback design, powered roof, and standard Brembo/BBS/Recaro package. Choose a Grand Touring model when comfort and additional convenience or safety equipment matter more than Club-focused performance hardware.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Buy the 2025 soft-top MX-5 unless the RF’s fastback styling and powered roof are the features you value most. The RF remains fun, but it costs more and gives up some of the openness, lightness, visibility, and simplicity that define the Miata.
