2025 Lexus TX 500h F SPORT Performance First Drive: Why Didn’t Lexus Think of This Before?

The 2025 Lexus TX 500h F SPORT Performance combines 366 hybrid horsepower, a six-speed automatic, rear-biased DIRECT4 AWD, rear steering, and real three-row utility.

Yes—Lexus should have thought of this sooner. The 2025 Lexus TX 500h F SPORT Performance is a genuinely useful three-row family crossover with the powertrain and chassis hardware to make a winding road feel like part of the trip, not just the route between errands. It is not a true sports SUV, but it is one of the most convincing fast-family-hybrid ideas in the segment.

Yes—Lexus should have thought of this sooner. The 2025 Lexus TX 500h F SPORT Performance takes the familiar three-row luxury crossover formula and adds the hardware usually reserved for a much smaller performance vehicle: a 366-net-horsepower turbocharged hybrid system, a six-speed automatic transmission, rear-biased electric all-wheel drive, Dynamic Rear Steering, and standard Adaptive Variable Suspension.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

The result is not a sports SUV in the traditional sense. The TX 500h is still a large, nearly 5,000-pound family crossover. But it is unusually quick, quiet, composed, and agile for a vehicle built to carry six people and their luggage. Its most convincing role is a fast long-distance family SUV—one that can make a winding road enjoyable without sacrificing the space and isolation expected of a Lexus.

2025 Lexus TX 500h F SPORT Performance: quick verdict

What works What does not
Strong, smooth 366-hp hybrid powertrain High pricing relative to the mechanically related Toyota Grand Highlander
Six-speed automatic feels more purposeful than a CVT Large dimensions remain obvious in parking garages and tight streets
DIRECT4, rear steering, and adaptive dampers add genuine chassis ability Hard driving can expose tire and brake limitations
Quiet, comfortable highway manners Not a track-ready performance SUV
Useful third row and 20.2 cubic feet of space behind it Only six seats because second-row captain’s chairs are standard on the 500h configuration

Best description: a surprisingly athletic, luxury-focused three-row hybrid for buyers who want one vehicle to handle commuting, family duty, road trips, and occasional enthusiastic driving.

What changed for 2025?

The TX debuted for the 2024 model year, so 2025 is not a ground-up redesign. Lexus expanded the lineup with an F SPORT Handling grade for TX 350 AWD models and made a 12.3-inch multi-information display standard on TX 350 models. The TX 500h continued as the dedicated performance hybrid, offered only in F SPORT Performance Premium and F SPORT Performance Luxury forms.

Lexus Safety System+ 3.0 remained standard throughout the 2025 TX range. The overall TX line started at $56,490 including delivery, but that entry price does not describe the 500h. The performance hybrid occupies a much higher part of the range.

Do not confuse the TX 350 F SPORT Handling with the TX 500h

This distinction matters. The TX 350 F SPORT Handling is a chassis-and-appearance version of the turbocharged gasoline TX 350 AWD. The TX 500h F SPORT Performance is the more comprehensive engineering exercise. It adds the 366-hp hybrid powertrain, DIRECT4 all-wheel drive, Dynamic Rear Steering, and standard Adaptive Variable Suspension.

In other words, the 500h is not simply a TX 350 with darker trim, sport seats, and a badge. Its drivetrain and chassis hardware are the reason this version feels different.

The powertrain is the entire point

Under the hood is a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine working with Lexus hybrid electric drive. System output is 366 net combined horsepower and 406 lb-ft of torque. Those figures are combined system ratings, not the output of the gasoline engine by itself.

Component 2025 TX 500h specification
Gasoline engine 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder
Net system output 366 net combined horsepower
System torque 406 lb-ft
Transmission Six-speed automatic
Front electric motor 64-kW motor
Rear electric drive 76-kW rear eAxle
Battery Nickel-metal-hydride battery beneath the second row
Drive system DIRECT4 all-wheel drive

The six-speed automatic is especially important to the character of the TX 500h. Many hybrid crossovers use a continuously variable transmission, which can make acceleration feel mechanically disconnected from engine speed. The Lexus instead provides recognizable gear changes and a more conventional relationship between throttle input, engine sound, and forward motion.

That does not make the powertrain silent under full throttle. A turbocharged four-cylinder working hard in a large SUV can still sound busy. However, the electric motors fill in the initial response, the engine supplies sustained power, and the transmission gives the acceleration a more deliberate rhythm. The result feels strong and linear rather than frantic.

DIRECT4 gives the big Lexus a more active feel

Lexus DIRECT4 is more than a marketing label in this application. The system can vary the front-to-rear distribution of available drive force from 100:0 to 20:80 depending on conditions. The rear eAxle can therefore provide up to 80 percent of available drive force to the rear wheels when the system determines that doing so is useful.

This does not turn the TX into a conventional rear-wheel-drive SUV. There is no mechanical driveshaft making it rear-drive in the traditional sense, and the vehicle remains a front-biased crossover in its basic layout. But the electric rear axle can reduce the push-wide sensation common to powerful front-driven crossovers and help the vehicle feel more willing on corner exit.

That distinction is central to understanding the TX 500h. DIRECT4 makes the vehicle feel more balanced and responsive; it does not change the laws of physics or disguise the SUV’s size.

Dynamic Rear Steering and Adaptive Variable Suspension

Dynamic Rear Steering is standard on the F SPORT Performance model. At lower speeds, the rear wheels turn opposite the front wheels to improve maneuverability. At higher speeds, they turn in the same direction as the front wheels to improve stability and response.

It is useful in a vehicle this long, but it does not make the TX small. The 500h is approximately 203.5 inches long and 78.3 inches wide with the mirrors folded. Drivers will still notice its footprint in narrow parking structures, older urban garages, and tight city streets.

Standard Adaptive Variable Suspension changes damping in response to road and driving conditions. In Comfort mode, it supports the TX’s traditional Lexus mission by softening rough surfaces and reducing fatigue. Sport mode gives the body more control and makes the steering and powertrain feel more engaged, particularly on a curving road.

How does the TX 500h drive?

Reported first-drive impressions agree on the broad character: the TX 500h is quick without feeling nervous. It gathers speed easily for highway merges and passing, stays quiet at cruising speeds, and feels more agile than its three-row proportions suggest. The combination of electric torque, turbocharged power, rear electric drive, and rear steering is particularly effective when the road starts to bend.

The positive impression should not be overstated. The TX remains a large family vehicle with a high seating position and substantial mass. Independent testing has found that aggressive driving can overwhelm the tires and produce brake odor, with overall grip falling short of what the F SPORT Performance name might imply.

That is not evidence of a badly engineered vehicle. It is evidence of a vehicle with a broad mission. Lexus appears to have optimized the TX 500h for rapid real-world travel rather than repeated track-style cornering and braking. It is excellent at making a road trip feel less passive. It is not designed to be thrown into corners indefinitely like a dedicated performance SUV or sports sedan.

Where it feels strongest

  • Highway merging and passing: The hybrid motors provide immediate response while the turbocharged engine keeps pulling at higher speeds.
  • Winding public roads: Sport mode, rear steering, DIRECT4, and adaptive damping make the TX feel intentional rather than merely competent.
  • Long-distance travel: The quiet cabin, stable body control, and comfortable seating reduce fatigue.
  • Wet or low-grip conditions: DIRECT4 can adjust torque distribution as conditions change, although it is not a substitute for appropriate tires and prudent driving.

Where its limits appear

  • Repeated hard braking: The vehicle’s mass and family-oriented hardware become more apparent when driven aggressively.
  • Maximum cornering: Tire grip and the TX’s front-biased crossover layout eventually limit confidence.
  • Tight maneuvering: Rear steering helps, but the TX remains more than 17 feet long.
  • Track use: This is not the right Lexus for repeated track sessions. The performance equipment improves everyday control; it does not make the TX a circuit vehicle.

Ride, noise, and everyday usability

Comfort is where the TX 500h most clearly remains a Lexus. Comfort mode prioritizes isolation over immediacy, and the long wheelbase helps the SUV feel settled on the highway. Independent coverage has described the combination as both comfortable and unusually athletic, which is the unusual achievement here: the TX does not require buyers to choose between a relaxed road-trip vehicle and a powertrain with personality.

The standard 14-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen is another strong everyday feature. The display is crisp and responsive in independent coverage, and wireless Apple CarPlay has generally worked without the lag associated with some older infotainment systems. That is a short-term usability impression, not evidence of long-term interface reliability.

Visibility and maneuverability are aided by the TX’s available camera technology and rear steering, but the dimensions still matter. Anyone who regularly uses small parking spaces should check garage measurements before buying, especially if moving from a midsize SUV.

Interior: a real three-row Lexus, with one important compromise

The TX was designed to give Lexus a genuinely useful three-row cabin rather than a nominal third row for occasional emergencies. Official specifications list 33.5 inches of third-row legroom and 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row. Folding the rear seating expands maximum cargo volume to 97.0 cubic feet.

The nickel-metal-hydride hybrid battery is mounted beneath the second row, so it does not take a visible bite out of the cargo area. That packaging is one of the most important reasons the 500h works as a family vehicle instead of feeling like a performance variant that sacrificed its utility.

Six seats, not seven

The TX 500h uses second-row captain’s chairs and seats six. The arrangement improves access to the third row and gives the cabin a more upscale, lounge-like feel, but it eliminates the seven-passenger bench-seat layout available in some other TX versions.

The third row is appropriate for children and usable by average-size adults, but it is not limousine-like. Family fit depends heavily on the front occupants and child-seat arrangement. One tall-driver family evaluation found that second-row space could become tight when a child seat was installed behind a very tall front occupant. Buyers should bring their actual car seats and measure their normal seating positions rather than relying on the seat count alone.

Premium versus Luxury equipment

The TX 500h is available in F SPORT Performance Premium and F SPORT Performance Luxury trims. Both carry the performance identity, but equipment can vary by grade and options. Depending on the exact vehicle, features may include leather-trimmed F SPORT seating, heated and ventilated front seats, an F SPORT steering wheel and instrumentation, aluminum pedals, aluminum scuff plates, a panoramic roof, and Mark Levinson audio.

Do not assume every one of those items is standard on every 500h. A listing or review should identify whether it describes the Premium or Luxury grade and call out options separately. This is especially important when comparing a dealer vehicle with a tested example.

Fuel economy, towing, and ownership requirements

Fuel economy

The 2025 TX 500h carries manufacturer-estimated fuel economy of 27 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. These are estimates, not guaranteed results. Weather, speed, traffic, passengers, tire pressure, cargo, and driving style can all change actual consumption.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For perspective, Consumer Reports recorded 24 mpg in its own testing. That figure should be treated as an observed result under that publication’s conditions, not as a replacement for the manufacturer’s rating or a promise of what every owner will achieve.

The 500h is also not a plug-in hybrid. It cannot be charged from an external power source. The plug-in model is the separate TX 550h+.

Towing

Lexus rates the TX 500h for up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity. Reaching that figure requires the correct equipment and compliance with the owner’s manual, including trailer, tongue-weight, loading, braking, and hitch requirements.

The rating makes the 500h more versatile, but it does not automatically make a hybrid powertrain ideal for frequent maximum-weight towing. Buyers who tow regularly should consider trailer weight, terrain, climate, trip length, payload, and the availability of appropriate service and equipment—not just the headline rating.

Hybrid warranty

Official warranty materials describe an eight-year or 100,000-mile hybrid-system warranty and a ten-year or 150,000-mile hybrid-battery warranty, alongside Lexus’s standard vehicle warranties. Coverage depends on the component, vehicle location, and applicable terms. Owners should consult the warranty and services guide for exclusions, maintenance requirements, and conditions rather than assuming every hybrid-related part has identical coverage.

Price and value: the difficult part of the argument

Kelley Blue Book listed 2025 MSRP figures of $70,010 for the TX 500h F SPORT Performance Premium and $73,160 for the F SPORT Performance Luxury, before options and local transaction differences. One independently reviewed test vehicle reached $79,614 as tested.

That pricing is the TX 500h’s clearest weakness. It is not merely a modestly upgraded Grand Highlander. At this money, shoppers can consider larger or more prestigious luxury SUVs, some of which may offer stronger outright performance, richer materials, or greater towing capacity.

The Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX is the obvious value comparison. The two vehicles share substantial underlying architecture and drivetrain-family relationships, making the price gap difficult to ignore. The Lexus counters with a quieter and more luxurious presentation, distinct styling, Lexus dealer support, and more sophisticated performance hardware in the 500h application.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The correct value question is therefore not whether the TX 500h delivers the maximum space or horsepower per dollar. It does not. The question is whether the buyer values the combination of hybrid thrust, luxury isolation, three-row usefulness, Lexus ownership appeal, and a more engaging chassis enough to pay the premium over the Toyota.

Recall and used-buying checks

An important current ownership note is NHTSA Campaign 25V744, reported October 30, 2025. The campaign covers certain 2024–2026 Lexus TX and TX Hybrid vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor. A software error may cause the rearview camera image to freeze or display a blank screen while reversing, creating a rear-visibility and crash risk. The listed remedy is a free dealer software update.

  • Easy Maintenance & Versatile Use — Supportive foam maintains shape over time; ideal for office work, remote learning, long drives, gaming sessions or travel — excellent for people working long hours sitting down

That does not mean every 2025 TX 500h is affected. Recall eligibility depends on the vehicle identification number, production details, and equipment. Owners and used-car shoppers should run the specific VIN through the NHTSA recall lookup and ask a Lexus dealer to confirm open campaigns and completed remedies before purchase. Other software campaigns or service actions may also vary by VIN and production date.

Who should buy the 2025 Lexus TX 500h?

Buy it if you want:

  • A genuinely useful three-row Lexus rather than a cramped emergency third row.
  • Strong acceleration without giving up hybrid efficiency.
  • A quiet, comfortable road-trip vehicle that can feel entertaining on a curving route.
  • Six seats with easy second-row access to the third row.
  • Performance hardware that is more substantial than an appearance package.
  • Up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity with the proper equipment.

Look elsewhere if you want:

  • The best space-per-dollar proposition.
  • A seven-seat configuration in the performance hybrid.
  • True sports-SUV cornering and braking performance.
  • A compact vehicle for dense city parking.
  • A plug-in hybrid. That role belongs to the TX 550h+.
  • The lowest-cost way to get a closely related hybrid powertrain. The Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX deserves a serious comparison.

Final verdict

Lexus thought of the TX 500h because the modern family vehicle is no longer expected to do only one job. Buyers want one SUV that can carry children, swallow luggage, commute efficiently, tow a trailer, cross a continent quietly, and still feel special when the road gets interesting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The execution is impressive. Lexus did not simply apply an F SPORT badge to a family crossover. It installed a turbocharged hybrid system, a conventional automatic transmission, rear electric drive, rear steering, and adaptive damping, then preserved the TX’s useful cabin and cargo layout.

But the TX 500h does not erase its compromises. It is heavy, large, front-biased in its basic architecture, limited by its tires and brakes when driven very hard, and expensive beside the Toyota. The most accurate verdict is therefore a qualified one: the 2025 Lexus TX 500h F SPORT Performance is a surprisingly good idea and impressively executed, but it makes the most sense for buyers who specifically want the Lexus experience—not simply the most rational three-row hybrid.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2025 Lexus TX 500h a plug-in hybrid?

No. The TX 500h is a conventional hybrid that cannot be charged from an external power source. Lexus offers the separate TX 550h+ as the plug-in hybrid model.

What is the difference between the TX 350 F SPORT Handling and the TX 500h?

The TX 350 F SPORT Handling is a sport-oriented grade of the gasoline TX 350 AWD. The TX 500h F SPORT Performance has the more powerful 366-hp hybrid system, DIRECT4 all-wheel drive, Dynamic Rear Steering, and standard Adaptive Variable Suspension.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many people can the TX 500h seat?

The TX 500h uses second-row captain’s chairs and seats six. Some other TX versions offer a seven-passenger bench-seat configuration, but that is not the layout described for the 500h.

What fuel economy does the 2025 Lexus TX 500h get?

The manufacturer-estimated rating is 27 mpg city, 28 mpg highway, and 27 mpg combined. Independent testing can produce different results; Consumer Reports observed 24 mpg in its testing, which should not be treated as a guarantee for every owner.

Does every 2025 Lexus TX 500h have the rearview-camera recall?

Not necessarily. NHTSA Campaign 25V744 covers certain 2024–2026 TX and TX Hybrid vehicles equipped with a Panoramic View Monitor. Check the specific VIN through NHTSA and confirm open or completed remedies with a Lexus dealer.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2025 Lexus TX 500h F SPORT Performance is best understood as a fast, quiet, comfortable family cruiser with real performance hardware—not as a track-oriented sports SUV. Its 366-hp hybrid system, six-speed automatic, DIRECT4 all-wheel drive, rear steering, and adaptive suspension make it unusually satisfying for a three-row vehicle, while its high price and physical limits keep the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX and more athletic luxury SUVs relevant alternatives.
