The 2025 Kia Niro is best understood as an economy-focused small crossover, not a performance car. Its three powertrains suit different routines: the HEV prioritizes fuel savings without plugging in, the PHEV can cover short commutes on electricity if charged regularly, and the EV runs entirely on battery power for drivers whose charging access and trip patterns fit its rated range. Independent testing found the Niro comfortable and easy to drive around town, but slow to accelerate and less composed when pushed.
What the 2025 Niro offers
Kia sells the U.S.-market Niro in three electrification levels: a conventional hybrid (HEV), a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), and a battery-electric vehicle (EV). They share an efficiency-first mission, but differ in how much they depend on charging and gasoline.

These figures come from different sources and describe estimates, not a controlled, like-for-like test of all three versions. Actual efficiency and range depend on conditions and use.
How does the Kia Niro drive?
Edmunds’ 2025 review describes the Niro as comfortable, easy to drive and blessed with good visibility—qualities that make it well suited to errands and urban commuting. The same review recorded 0–60 mph in 9.7 seconds at its test track and criticized the acceleration as lackluster. It also found that quick direction changes can unsettle the chassis.

That balance matters most when merging onto a fast highway, passing, or driving briskly on winding roads. Before choosing a trim or powertrain, try those maneuvers yourself as well as parking in a tight space and driving over rough pavement. Edmunds’ impressions are one independent review, not a guarantee that every driver will experience the car identically.
Which powertrain makes the most sense?
Choose the HEV for simpler fuel savings
The HEV is the uncomplicated choice if plugging in is inconvenient or you do not want charging to be part of your routine. Kia’s EPA-estimated combined figure varies by wheel size: 53 mpg with 16-inch wheels and 49 mpg with 18-inch wheels. Confirm the exact trim’s wheel fitment and check its EPA label rather than assuming every HEV earns the higher estimate. The figures are estimates and can vary with driving, options and vehicle condition.

Choose the PHEV if you will charge it often
The PHEV’s reported 33-mile EPA-estimated electric range can cover some short daily trips without using gasoline, provided you charge it regularly and your actual trips and conditions allow. After the battery’s electric range is used, Edmunds/AP reports an EPA-estimated 48 mpg combined in hybrid operation. If you rarely plug in, the electric-commuting benefit is less useful; compare your likely charging routine and annual mileage with the HEV before deciding.
Edmunds/AP notes that the PHEV comes in EX and SX Touring trims and praises its technology and quiet, modern-feeling interior. Those are reviewer assessments, rather than universal outcomes. The PHEV is front-wheel drive; shoppers who require AWD should look elsewhere. Kia said the 2025 PHEV SX Touring includes a Cold Weather Package with heated rear seats and a PTC heater intended to help preserve electric range. That manufacturer description does not establish a measured winter-range result.

Choose the EV if your charging and trips fit
The Niro EV is a separate full-electric model, with no gasoline fallback. Kia rated its 64.8-kWh battery for 253 miles of EPA-estimated range. Treat that as a rating, not a promise of how far it will travel in every season, at every speed, or on every route. Consider how often you take longer trips, where you can charge, and how comfortable you are planning around available charging and a range estimate.
Trims, launch prices and 2025 changes
Kia’s U.S. pricing announcements in September 2024 gave these original MSRPs, all before destination. They are historical launch prices, not current dealer quotes or a statement of today’s market value; Kia said retailer-set actual prices may vary.

For 2025, Kia said all HEV and PHEV trims gained standard rear seatbelt pretensioners. On the EV, both trims gained standard rear seatbelt pretensioners; the Wind added a larger 10.25-inch instrument cluster and rotary-dial transmission controller, while the Wave added features including a head-up display and rear blind-spot collision avoidance. These are manufacturer-reported equipment changes; check the specific vehicle’s equipment before purchase.
What to check before buying
- Charging reality: For the PHEV or EV, identify where and how often you can charge. A PHEV is most compelling when regular charging aligns with short trips; an EV requires a plan that works for both routine driving and occasional longer journeys.
- Exact HEV configuration: Verify wheel size, trim and the EPA label because Kia’s stated combined estimate differs between 16- and 18-inch wheels.
- Driving performance: Test a highway merge and a pass in the conditions you expect to encounter. Edmunds’ test found modest acceleration, so make sure it meets your needs.
- Current price: Get current dealer quotes and compare used listings. The figures above were launch MSRPs announced in 2024, before destination, not current transaction prices.
- Drivetrain: The cited Edmunds/AP review confirms that the PHEV lacks AWD. Verify the drivetrain for the exact variant you are considering if AWD availability is a deciding factor.
Verdict
The Niro’s strongest case is efficient, approachable everyday transportation, with a powertrain choice for drivers who do not want to plug in, those who can charge for short commutes, and those ready to go fully electric. Its trade-off is performance: independent testing points to slow acceleration and less composure when driven hard. Match the powertrain to your charging habits, then drive the specific version on roads that reflect your real routine.
