2025 Ford Mustang GTD Nürburgring Lap: 6:52.072, Then a Faster GTD Competition

The 2025 Mustang GTD’s Nürburgring benchmark was 6:52.072, but Ford later reported a 6:40.835 lap by the distinct GTD Competition.

The 2025 Ford Mustang GTD set a Nürburgring Nordschleife lap of 6:52.072 in the Production Class, improving on its earlier 6:57.685 run. That is no longer the fastest GTD time: Ford reported that a different version, the GTD Competition, ran 6:40.835 in April 2026. The distinction matters—the later time belongs to the Competition, not the 2025 GTD benchmark.

What time did the 2025 Mustang GTD set at the Nürburgring?

Ford Racing identifies the 2025 Mustang GTD’s Production Class benchmark as 6:52.072. The lap improved on the 6:57.685 run Ford announced on December 10, 2024, driven by Multimatic factory driver Dirk Müller. Ford described that earlier result as the first sub-seven-minute Nürburgring lap by a car from an American marque. Ford’s 2024 announcement gives the original time; the precise 6:52.072 benchmark appears in Ford Racing’s 2026 report.

Ford’s current GTD page rounds the 2024 and 2025 laps to 6:57 and 6:52, respectively. The more precise 6:52.072 figure is Ford Racing’s stated Production Class benchmark, not a rounded figure from the page. Ford’s current Mustang GTD page lists the rounded times.

Is 6:52.072 still the fastest Mustang GTD lap?

No. On April 16, 2026, Ford Racing reported a 6:40.835 lap by the Mustang GTD Competition, more than 11 seconds faster than the 6:52.072 Production Class benchmark. It is a later result by a distinct GTD version, so it should not be presented as the 2025 GTD’s time or as a like-for-like replacement without naming the vehicle distinction.

6:40.835 Mustang GTD Competition Reported April 16, 2026, by Ford Racing

Ford attributed the Competition’s faster result to powertrain changes, additional aerodynamic features, new high-performance tires, and weight reduction. Those are the manufacturer’s explanations; the reported times and technical claims here are not independent test findings.

What does “Green Hell” mean, and how is a Nürburgring lap timed?

“Green Hell” is an enthusiast nickname for the Nürburgring Nordschleife. The venue describes a full lap as 20.832 km, run from a flying start between defined timing points. Its official record process includes calibrated timekeeping, notary supervision, documentation of vehicle condition, and classification under German Federal Motor Transport Authority categories. That context is why a lap time is most useful when reported with the vehicle version, category, date, and record status. The Nürburgring’s record methodology outlines the process.

What makes the Mustang GTD suited to a fast lap?

Ford lists a 5.2-liter V8, an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission, magnesium wheels, carbon-fiber bodywork, adjustable semi-active suspension, and aerodynamic features for the GTD. These are manufacturer-listed specifications and design elements; they explain the car’s stated configuration, but do not by themselves establish how much each item contributed to a particular lap.

For the later GTD Competition, Ford specifically cites powertrain changes, more aerodynamic equipment, new high-performance tires, and reduced weight as factors behind the 6:40.835 result. The Competition’s lap is therefore a separate development of the GTD story rather than evidence that the 2025 production benchmark itself changed.

Why the 2025 result mattered

The 6:57.685 announcement put the GTD below the seven-minute mark and gave Ford a milestone it described as a first for an American marque. Ford president and CEO Jim Farley said: “We’re proud to be the first American automaker with a car that can lap the Nürburgring in under seven minutes, but we aren’t satisfied. We know the Mustang GTD can set a faster Nürburgring lap. We’ll be back.” The later 6:52.072 GTD benchmark and 6:40.835 Competition lap followed that stated ambition, while remaining distinct results for different versions.
