The 2025 BMW i4 eDrive40 pairs a rear-wheel-drive electric powertrain with a four-door coupé body and a practical liftback-style boot. BMW’s published figures describe a quick, versatile luxury EV—but the “E30 of EVs” label is an interpretation, not a comparison the available evidence explains. And without a verified 2025 U.S. EPA rating or firsthand road-test notes, neither a definitive range claim nor a driving verdict is justified.
What the E30 comparison does—and does not—tell you
Calling the i4 eDrive40 “the E30 of EVs” invites a comparison with the classic BMW 3 Series, but the phrase alone does not establish what is being compared. It could refer to driving character, size, price, accessibility, or cultural significance; no source located for this title explains the intended axis. Treat the analogy as the reviewer’s framing, not a claim of direct lineage or a proven equivalence.
That distinction matters for a driving-focused review. The available evidence supports a clear account of the i4’s configuration and published performance, but it does not include the original reviewer’s road-test notes. It cannot substantiate claims about steering feel, ride comfort, handling, or how the car feels on the road.
What the eDrive40 is: a rear-drive EV with a hatchback opening
BMW describes the i4 as a four-door coupé with five seats and a high-opening boot lid. Although its silhouette reads as a conventional BMW sedan, the opening and folding rear seats give it liftback-style utility. BMW’s 2024 global refresh announcement lists 470 litres of cargo volume, expanding to 1,290 litres. Those are manufacturer-published capacities, not a comparison with a specific rival.

The eDrive40 uses BMW’s fifth-generation eDrive technology, with an electric motor at the rear axle. In BMW Group’s 2024 global specifications, it produces 250 kW (340 hp) and 430 Nm (317 lb-ft), and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.6 seconds. That is a brisk published acceleration figure; it does not, by itself, establish a particular driving character.
BMW’s published range and efficiency figures depend on test cycle and update
BMW’s 2024 global refresh release gives the eDrive40 a WLTP range of 468–600 km and combined WLTP consumption of 15.4–19.4 kWh/100 km. These are global-market figures expressed on the WLTP test cycle, not U.S. EPA ratings. The broad bands also mean a single number would conceal the range BMW published for that specification.

BMW Group’s summer 2025 update says that, from July 2025, the eDrive40 would receive silicon-carbide components in its power electronics. BMW says the change could reduce consumption by around 4.5% and add up to 22 km of range, depending on model and equipment. In the update’s WLTP context, BMW lists 17.8 kWh/100 km consumption and a 510–613 km range. These figures belong to that stated update and test-cycle context; they should not be presented as U.S. EPA results.
Charging: current U.S. figures are not confirmed as 2025-specific
BMW USA’s live i4 technical page currently displays charging figures for a configuration shown there: up to 11.5 kW AC and 205 kW DC, with estimated times of 8.5 hours for AC charging from 0–100% and 30 minutes for DC charging from 10–80%. The page is dynamic and does not establish that these figures apply to every 2025 i4 eDrive40, so treat them as current page data rather than verified 2025 model-year claims.

For a home charging setup, AC charging is the relevant category; the actual installation and charging time depend on the vehicle configuration and home electrical setup. BMW’s page also cautions that range varies with factors including wheels, driving style, traffic, temperature, accessories, and charging frequency. A displayed estimate is not a promise of real-world range.

A January 2025 Cars.com owner account describes the i4 as luxurious and points to hatch and folding-seat practicality, while also mentioning a learning curve with its features. That is one owner’s anecdote, not a representative survey or a substitute for driving the car yourself.
