The 2024 Toyota Prius is the second year of the fifth-generation redesign, so Toyota carried it into 2024 without major equipment changes. That is not a problem: the new Prius is dramatically quicker and better-looking than the car it replaced while still delivering exceptional fuel economy.
But the redesign also created real compromises. The lower roof makes the back seat less welcoming, the sloping hatch hurts rear visibility, and the upper trims give up several miles per gallon for equipment that does not improve performance. The 2024 Prius is a much better car than the old one, but it is not automatically the best choice in every trim.
The good
It is finally quick enough for normal traffic
The previous Prius generations earned a reputation for being slow. The 2024 model largely fixes that problem with a 2.0-liter hybrid powertrain producing 194 horsepower in front-wheel-drive form. Adding electronic all-wheel drive raises the output slightly to 196 horsepower.
Independent testing put a front-drive Prius Limited at 60 mph in 7.1 seconds, while another front-drive test car managed 7.7 seconds. Those numbers do not make the Prius a sports car, but they are quick enough for highway merging, passing, and entering busy intersections without planning several seconds ahead.

The hybrid system is generally smooth in ordinary driving. Push the accelerator hard, however, and the gasoline engine becomes noticeably louder. The Prius is more responsive than before, not luxurious or silent under heavy acceleration.
Fuel economy is still the main reason to buy one
The Prius remains one of the most efficient non-plug-in cars available. The important detail is that the advertised 57 mpg figure applies only to the front-wheel-drive LE. Larger wheels, extra equipment, and all-wheel drive reduce the rating.
| Trim | Drivetrain | EPA city/highway/combined |
|---|---|---|
| LE | FWD | 57/56/57 mpg |
| LE | AWD | 53/54/54 mpg |
| XLE | FWD | 52/52/52 mpg |
| XLE | AWD | 49/50/49 mpg |
| Limited | FWD | 52/52/52 mpg |
| Limited | AWD | 49/50/49 mpg |
Real-world results depend on speed, temperature, tires, terrain, and driving style. Testing observed 52.3 mpg in a front-drive Limited, while a 75-mph highway test returned 49 mpg. Those figures are still strong, but buyers should not assume every Prius will deliver its EPA headline number in every situation.
The hatchback is more useful than a sedan trunk
The Prius seats five and uses a rear hatch, giving it more loading flexibility than a similarly sized sedan. Official cargo volume with the rear seats up is 23.8 cubic feet in the LE and LE AWD. XLE and Limited models have 20.3 cubic feet.
That difference matters if you regularly carry bulky groceries, luggage, or equipment. The higher trims use larger 19-inch wheels and related packaging that reduce available cargo space. The Kia Niro offers more cargo room, but the Prius still provides useful hatchback practicality for daily errands.
Standard safety equipment is a strong point
Every 2024 Prius includes Toyota Safety Sense 3.0. Standard systems include:
- Pre-collision detection with pedestrian detection
- Lane-departure alert with steering assist
- Lane-tracing assist
- Adaptive cruise control
- Automatic high beams
- Road-sign assist
The Prius hatchback also earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ award. That result applies to the Prius hatchback, not the separately evaluated Prius Prime. The Prius received Good ratings in several crash and pedestrian-prevention tests, although it received an Acceptable rating in the updated moderate-overlap test.
The infotainment equipment is competitive
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the lineup. LE and XLE models come with an 8-inch center display, while the Limited gets a 12.3-inch touchscreen. The larger display is also available on the XLE through an option package.

A 7-inch digital driver display is standard. Depending on trim and options, buyers can add a digital rearview mirror, parking sensors with automatic braking, and a 360-degree camera. The technology package is one of the reasons to consider an XLE or Limited, although those upgrades come with a price and efficiency penalty.
Toyota’s hybrid warranty reduces some ownership anxiety
For U.S. vehicles, the hybrid battery warranty covers 10 years or 150,000 miles, whichever comes first. The rest of the coverage includes a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and scheduled maintenance for 2 years or 25,000 miles.
A hybrid battery is still an expensive component outside warranty, but the coverage is considerably more reassuring than the outdated idea that Prius buyers are immediately exposed to a major battery bill.
The bad
The back seat pays for the sleek roofline
The fifth-generation Prius looks much more athletic partly because Toyota lowered the roof by roughly two inches. That styling change is obvious inside: rear headroom is 36.4 inches, compared with 38.0 inches in front.

The rear door openings are not especially generous either. The rear seat is usable, but it is no longer the Prius’s strongest argument for family transportation.

The rear seats do not recline, and there are no rear air vents. Families should spend time in the back seat before buying rather than judging space from exterior dimensions or the five-passenger seating claim.
Rear visibility is a genuine weakness
The sharply angled rear glass, thick roof pillars, and low roof make it harder to see directly behind the car than in earlier Priuses. This is not just a minor adjustment period; independent reviews consistently identify rear visibility as one of the redesigned car’s significant drawbacks.
A digital rearview mirror is available on higher trims, but it is not standard across the range. If you frequently park in crowded lots, reverse on narrow streets, or carry rear passengers and cargo, test the visibility carefully before choosing an LE or XLE without that feature.

Instead of sitting directly behind the steering wheel in the conventional location, the instrument display is high and far forward. Depending on the driver’s seating position and steering-wheel adjustment, the wheel can partially block the display.
This is a small issue compared with the rear-seat compromises, but it is something buyers should check during a test drive. A layout that works well for one driver may be awkward for another.
The cabin is not as quiet as the exterior suggests
The Prius is smooth during relaxed driving, but tire and wind noise are noticeable. The engine also gets loud under hard acceleration. Higher trims add more sound insulation, but the car does not become a luxury-quiet commuter simply because its exterior is sleek and expensive-looking.
Higher trims sacrifice efficiency without adding power
The front-drive LE returns 57 mpg combined. Moving to an XLE or Limited drops that rating to 52 mpg, while all-wheel-drive XLE and Limited models are rated at 49 mpg combined.
The higher trims do not produce more power. Their larger wheels, added equipment, and extra comfort features account for much of the difference. That trade may be worthwhile if you want heated seats, upgraded technology, or additional convenience features, but it weakens the financial case for paying more.
The meh
Trim choice matters more than the badge
2024 U.S. base MSRPs were:
| Trim | Base MSRP |
|---|---|
| LE FWD | $27,950 |
| LE AWD | $29,350 |
| XLE FWD | $31,395 |
| XLE AWD | $32,795 |
| Limited FWD | $34,965 |
| Limited AWD | $36,365 |
These figures do not include destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer add-ons, or market adjustments.
The front-drive LE is the rational value choice. It has the highest EPA fuel-economy rating and the most cargo room, along with smaller 17-inch wheels. Its drawbacks include a less upscale interior, fewer comfort features, and less sound-deadening material.
The XLE is the most sensible compromise for buyers who want more equipment without paying Limited money. The Limited adds premium technology and convenience features, but its price approaches that of larger or more powerful alternatives. It is difficult to justify unless those specific features matter to you.
AWD adds traction, not excitement
The Prius’s all-wheel-drive system uses a separate rear electric motor that operates on demand. It can help with traction in snow, rain, or on slippery roads, and it increases system output by only two horsepower.
It does not turn the Prius into an off-road vehicle or a performance car. It also lowers fuel economy compared with the equivalent front-drive version. Buyers in snowy areas may find the additional traction worthwhile, but buyers hoping for sharper handling or faster acceleration should not pay extra for AWD.

EV mode is not electric-car driving
The regular Prius is a conventional hybrid, not a plug-in hybrid. Its EV Mode can move the car using battery power alone at low speeds and for short distances under limited conditions, such as maneuvering in a parking garage.
It is not designed for an electric-only commute. The gasoline engine can start automatically when speed, accelerator demand, battery charge, temperature, or other conditions require it. The vehicle capable of meaningful plug-in electric driving is the separately named Prius Prime, which has different specifications and pricing.
Check the recall by VIN on a used car
The rear-door-switch recall requires especially careful wording for anyone shopping for a used 2024 Prius. In January 2026, NHTSA recall 26V049 expanded and replaced the earlier campaign. It covers certain 2023–2026 Prius models, 2023–2024 Prius Prime models, and 2025–2026 Prius Plug-in Hybrid models.
Water can enter the rear-door switch, create a short circuit, and allow an unlocked rear door to open unexpectedly while driving. Toyota campaign numbers for the 2026 recall are 26TB03 and 26TA03. Dealers perform the circuit modification free of charge.
A vehicle repaired under the earlier recall may still need the new remedy. Before buying a used 2024 Prius, enter its 17-character VIN into the NHTSA or Toyota recall lookup tool. Do not rely on a seller saying that “the recall was already fixed,” and do not assume every 2024 Prius is affected without checking the individual VIN.

- Choose the LE FWD if fuel economy, cargo capacity, and purchase value are your priorities. It is the model that makes the strongest financial and practical case.
- Choose the LE AWD if you need additional traction but still want more efficiency than the upper trims provide.
- Choose the XLE if you want a better-equipped cabin and are willing to accept the drop to 52 mpg FWD or 49 mpg AWD.
- Choose the Limited only if its larger screen, available digital mirror, parking assistance, and other premium features are worth the higher price and reduced practicality.
Whichever trim you inspect, sit in the rear seat, check the hatch opening and cargo floor, adjust the steering wheel to verify the driver-display view, and look through the rear glass before signing a deal.

Is the 2024 Toyota Prius reliable?
The 2024 Prius benefits from Toyota’s established hybrid design and a hybrid battery warranty of 10 years or 150,000 miles. Used buyers should still inspect maintenance records and verify the vehicle’s VIN for open recalls, including the updated rear-door-switch campaign.
Which 2024 Prius gets 57 mpg?
Only the front-wheel-drive Prius LE is rated at 57 mpg combined. The LE AWD is rated at 54 mpg combined, the front-drive XLE and Limited at 52 mpg, and the AWD XLE and Limited at 49 mpg.
Does the regular 2024 Prius drive like an electric car?
No. It is a conventional hybrid that can use battery power alone at low speeds for short periods. It does not offer extended electric-only driving; that capability belongs to the separately named Prius Prime plug-in hybrid.
Is the 2024 Prius good for a family?
It can work for a small family, but the rear seat is tighter than in the previous Prius. Rear headroom is 36.4 inches, the doors are relatively small, the seats do not recline, and there are no rear air vents. Families should test the back seat in person.

The 2024 Toyota Prius is a far more complete car than its predecessors: it is quick enough for modern traffic, stylish, efficient, practical in hatchback form, and well-equipped with standard safety technology. Its weaknesses mostly come from the same styling decisions that make it appealing. The low roof hurts rear headroom, the sloping hatch limits visibility, and upper trims lose efficiency and cargo space.
For most buyers, the front-wheel-drive LE is the best answer. The XLE makes sense as a comfort-and-equipment upgrade, while the Limited is harder to justify unless you specifically want its premium technology. Anyone buying a used 2024 Prius should check the VIN for the current rear-door recall remedy before purchase.
