The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland is a major refinement of the Model 3, not a clean-sheet replacement. It is quieter, more polished, and more technologically redesigned than earlier versions, but the word “Highland” does not identify a particular trim, battery, drivetrain, or equipment package. Used buyers should verify the VIN and build sheet before relying on any listing’s range or feature claims.
The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland is a major mid-cycle refresh, not an all-new generation. It keeps the Model 3’s efficient electric-sedan formula, strong acceleration, Supercharger integration, and useful front-and-rear cargo areas, while improving exterior design, cabin quietness, ride refinement, and interior technology. The most important caution for shoppers is that Highland is informal Tesla-community shorthand, not a trim level. A listing that says “2024 Model 3 Highland” still does not tell you the drivetrain, battery configuration, wheel package, audio system, rear display, software features, or remaining warranty.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
For a new-car buyer, the best 2024 configuration depends on priorities: the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive is the range-and-efficiency choice, the Long Range All-Wheel Drive adds traction and quicker acceleration, the standard Rear-Wheel Drive is the value-oriented daily driver, and the Performance is a genuinely rapid sports sedan with more expensive tires, wheels, brakes, and suspension hardware. For a used buyer, the VIN, build sheet, software, recall status, charging behavior, tire wear, and battery warranty matter more than the Highland label.

“Highland” refers to the refreshed Model 3 introduced for the 2024 model year. Tesla’s own documentation generally calls the car Model 3 2024+, so Highland should not be treated as an official trim name. Tesla equipment and features can vary by market, production date, configuration, options, and software version. That distinction is especially important when comparing an early-2024 car with a later production vehicle or importing a car from another market.

The refresh is best understood as a refinement program. Tesla did not abandon the Model 3’s basic four-door electric-sedan layout, but it addressed several recurring complaints about earlier cars: exterior styling, road noise, ride comfort, cabin presentation, and the amount of conventional hardware in the driver’s immediate reach.
What changed on the 2024 Model 3?
- Quieter, more polished cabin: Independent testing found the refreshed car notably quieter than earlier Model 3 versions. Noise-control and ride-refinement changes are among the most meaningful improvements in everyday driving.
- Updated exterior: The front and rear styling are smoother and more contemporary, with aerodynamic changes intended to support efficiency as well as appearance.
- Redesigned front cabin: The center display is 15.4 inches. Premium configurations are listed with an additional 8-inch rear display, though the exact equipment must be verified on the individual vehicle.
- New steering-wheel controls: Some functions previously handled by stalks have moved to steering-wheel buttons or the touchscreen. Turn signals, shifting, and other controls require an adjustment period for drivers coming from an older Model 3 or a conventional car.
- More comfort equipment on better-equipped versions: Ventilated front seats and upgraded audio are available where fitted, but neither should be assumed solely because a listing uses the word Highland.
- A more hardware-focused Performance model: The refreshed Performance adds sport-tuned suspension with adaptive damping, upgraded brakes, performance-oriented wheels and tires, and substantially stronger acceleration.
2024 U.S. Model 3 configurations and range
The commonly documented U.S. 2024 lineup included the following configurations:
| Configuration | Drive | EPA-estimated range | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive | RWD | About 272 miles | Lower purchase cost and efficient daily driving |
| Model 3 Long Range RWD | RWD | About 363 miles | Maximum advertised range and efficiency |
| Model 3 Long Range AWD | Dual-motor AWD | About 341 miles | More traction and acceleration with slightly less range |
| Model 3 Performance | Dual-motor AWD | About 296 miles | Drivers prioritizing acceleration and handling |
These are approximate 2024 U.S. figures and can change with wheel choice. Larger wheels and performance tires generally reduce the rated range. Do not substitute the specifications on Tesla’s current Model 3 page for the original 2024 window sticker: Tesla changes its lineup, naming, equipment, and ratings over time.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Range is also not a guaranteed highway distance. The car’s displayed range is based on EPA-rated consumption and may not reflect the driver’s actual conditions. Speed, temperature, wind, elevation, climate use, tire choice, tire pressure, payload, and driving style can all materially change consumption. A 363-mile EPA estimate is useful for comparing configurations, but it is not a promise that the car will travel 363 miles on every trip.
Which 2024 Model 3 configuration is the smart choice?
- Choose Rear-Wheel Drive if purchase price, simplicity, and ordinary commuting matter more than maximum range or all-weather traction.
- Choose Long Range RWD if you want the strongest range-per-charge story and do not need dual-motor traction. Its advertised range makes it an unusually compelling long-distance and efficiency choice.
- Choose Long Range AWD if winter traction, quicker acceleration, or frequent driving on slippery roads justifies the additional cost and modest range trade-off.
- Choose Performance if you will use the extra chassis, braking, and acceleration capability. It is not merely a software upgrade over the other versions; its tires, wheels, brakes, suspension, and ride characteristics affect ownership costs.
Acceleration and driving experience
Every Model 3 feels quick because electric motors deliver torque immediately. Independent testing recorded 0–60 mph in 4.6 seconds for a Long Range RWD test car and 2.8 seconds for a tested 2024 Performance. Those are results from specific vehicles and test conditions, not universal guarantees for every Highland.
The Performance is the materially different version. Its adaptive dampers, sport-tuned chassis, upgraded brakes, and staggered performance wheels and tires are intended for drivers who value cornering and repeated hard use, not just a dramatic launch. The trade-offs are a firmer ride, greater sensitivity to poor pavement, potentially faster tire wear, more vulnerable wheels, and higher replacement costs.
The non-Performance versions are still fast enough for normal traffic. The Long Range RWD is particularly appealing because it combines strong acceleration with the lineup’s best advertised range. Current Tesla specifications may quote different acceleration or range figures for today’s versions, so used shoppers should use the original vehicle documentation and VIN-specific information when identifying a 2024 car.
Size, seating, and cargo capacity
The 2024+ North American owner’s manual lists approximately these dimensions for Rear-Wheel Drive and Long Range versions:
| Measurement | RWD/Long Range | Performance |
|---|---|---|
| Length | 185.8 inches | 185.9 inches |
| Body width, excluding mirrors | 72.8 inches | Not separately stated in the cited specification |
| Height | 56.7 inches | 56.3 inches |
| Wheelbase | 113.2 inches | Approximately the same platform |
| Ground clearance | 5.4 inches | About 5.0 inches |
Listed interior measurements are 40.3 inches of front headroom, 37.8 inches of rear headroom, 42.7 inches of front legroom, and 34.5 inches of rear legroom. Cargo capacity is approximately 3.1 cubic feet in the front trunk, 21 cubic feet behind the second row, and 24.1 cubic feet maximum with five passengers.
The liftback-like trunk opening, folding rear seats, front trunk, and flat cargo floor make the Model 3 more practical than its sedan profile suggests. It is still not an SUV. Tall rear passengers should sit in one before purchase, and buyers who regularly carry large appliances, bicycles, bulky strollers, or dirty equipment should test the opening and floor height rather than relying on the cargo-volume number.

Interior, controls, and technology
The Highland cabin is minimalist and software-led. The center touchscreen, steering-wheel controls, voice commands, and Tesla mobile app handle many functions that other cars assign to physical switches. The result is a clean dashboard and a vehicle that can receive over-the-air software changes, but it also creates a learning curve.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Drivers should spend time learning the control layout before relying on the car in traffic. The revised steering-wheel controls replace some conventional stalk functions, and the touchscreen can require more visual attention than a car with dedicated buttons for climate, wipers, lights, and other frequently used tasks.
The 2024 Model 3 does not provide native Apple CarPlay or Android Auto according to contemporary road-test coverage. Tesla instead supplies its own navigation, media, Bluetooth, mobile-app integration, and streaming features. If phone-projection compatibility is a requirement, test the car before buying; a third-party workaround is not equivalent to factory CarPlay or Android Auto.
The 15.4-inch center display is standard to the refreshed cabin, while Tesla’s listed Premium equipment includes an 8-inch rear display. Rear-seat display availability, seat ventilation, audio equipment, connectivity services, and software-enabled features can vary. For a used vehicle, check the in-car menus and build information instead of accepting a seller’s generic “Highland” description.
Charging at home and on road trips
North American Model 3 vehicles use Tesla’s NACS charging connector. Charging performance depends on the battery’s state of charge, battery temperature, charger type, vehicle configuration, site conditions, and software. A car’s peak charging number is therefore not the same thing as a guaranteed charging speed throughout a session.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHome charging
| Power source | Typical Tesla guidance | Practical meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 120-volt outlet with Mobile Connector | About 2–3 miles of range per hour | Useful for low-mileage driving or backup charging, but slow for regular high-mileage use |
| 240-volt setup | Up to about 30 miles of range per hour, depending on vehicle and installation | Much better suited to replenishing overnight |
For Model 3 Rear-Wheel Drive, Tesla identifies a 32-amp maximum charge rate under the cited Wall Connector and Mobile Connector home-charging setup. The vehicle’s limit and the home’s electrical installation both matter. The equipment price is only part of the project: a 240-volt circuit may require an electrician, panel capacity review, permits, conduit, and a location-specific installation quote.
That makes 240-volt EV charger installation a sensible service to compare before purchasing if you park in a garage, driveway, apartment, or condominium without suitable charging. Use a qualified installer and have the electrical work matched to the home and the charger; do not treat a higher-amperage circuit as a plug-and-play upgrade.
Supercharging and third-party charging
The Supercharger network is one of the Model 3’s strongest ownership advantages. Tesla’s route planning can incorporate charging stops, and the car’s software is designed around the network. Actual trip times still vary with traffic, weather, battery temperature, queueing, and the need to charge beyond the efficient portion of the session.
Used buyers should also verify the desired non-Tesla charging pathway. CCS and third-party charging capability can depend on regional hardware and communication-protocol support, and an adapter may be required. Do not assume that every 2024 Model 3 has identical adapter support simply because the cars share the Highland design.

Maintenance and running costs
Compared with a gasoline sedan, the Model 3 eliminates engine-oil changes, spark plugs, exhaust-system service, and many conventional powertrain repairs. It is not maintenance-free. Tires, brakes, suspension, alignment, glass, wiper blades, cabin filters, and collision-related electronics remain real ownership costs.

Tesla’s 2024+ manual recommends:
- Cabin-air filter: replace every two years.
- Wiper blades: replace annually.
- Tire rotation: every 6,250 miles or when tread-depth differences warrant it.
- Brake-caliper cleaning: annually or every 12,500 miles in areas where roads are salted during winter.
- Brake-fluid health check: every four years.
- Battery coolant: generally does not require replacement over the vehicle’s life under most circumstances.
Regenerative braking can reduce friction-brake use, but that does not remove the need to inspect brakes. In wet or salted areas, infrequently used brake components can benefit from the maintenance Tesla specifically calls out. Tires deserve particular attention: strong acceleration, alignment sensitivity, wheel size, tire compound, and driving style can shorten replacement intervals.
For routine ownership preparation, model-specific Tesla Model 3 cabin air filter replacements, a Model 3 tire inflator, and a Model 3 tire pressure gauge can be useful. Match every part or tool to the vehicle and follow Tesla’s procedures; a tire-pressure tool does not replace professional inspection, and lifting or underbody work should not be attempted without the correct equipment and safety practices.
Warranty considerations for used buyers
Tesla’s current product page lists a 4-year/50,000-mile basic vehicle warranty and an 8-year/100,000-mile battery-and-drive-unit warranty for a current Rear-Wheel Drive configuration. Those current terms should not automatically be applied to every 2024 car. Check the warranty document for the vehicle’s original delivery date, configuration, mileage, and market.
The important used-car question is not simply “Does it have an eight-year battery warranty?” It is: when did the warranty clock start, what mileage limit applies, which battery and drive-unit configuration is installed, and what coverage remains today?
Safety and the 2024 recall to check
Based on the cited sources, the 2024 Model 3 should not be described as an IIHS Top Safety Pick. IIHS’s 2024 award listing identifies the Model Y as a recipient and does not list the Model 3 among the winners on that page. Avoid converting Tesla’s safety reputation or driver-assistance marketing into a specific award claim that the cited listing does not support.
NHTSA recall campaign 24V-554 covered certain 2021–2024 Model 3 vehicles produced from September 21, 2020, through June 2, 2024. The hood-latch switch might fail to detect an open hood, preventing the driver warning. If the hood were unlatched, it could open and obstruct the driver’s view. Tesla reported an over-the-air software remedy beginning with firmware 2024.20.3 or later.
Recall status is VIN-specific. Before buying, obtain the 17-character VIN and:

- Run it through NHTSA’s VIN recall lookup.
- Check the vehicle’s in-car software screen for its installed version.

A year/make/model search can provide general recall information, but it cannot replace the VIN lookup for a particular used car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Used 2024 Model 3 Highland inspection checklist
“Highland” is not enough information to price or approve a used car. Before purchase, work through this checklist:
- Identify the car: Confirm the VIN, model year, production date, drivetrain, battery/range configuration, wheel size, and original build sheet.
- Verify recalls: Check NHTSA and Tesla records, including completion of applicable software campaigns.
- Inspect tires carefully: Measure tread, inspect inner shoulders, look for uneven wear, check wheel lips for bends, and listen for suspension or alignment-related noise.
- Test charging: Try AC home charging and, if possible, a DC fast charger. Confirm the charge port, cable locking, adapter support, and charging-session behavior.
- Do not overread displayed range: The range estimate is a diagnostic clue, not a direct battery-health measurement. Compare energy use and charging behavior under controlled conditions where possible.
- Test the cabin: Check every display, camera, steering-wheel control, seat adjustment, seat heating or ventilation, climate function, USB port, speaker, window, and door handle.
- Check software and paid features: Confirm the installed software version and which connectivity, driver-assistance, or other features are actually enabled.
- Inspect underneath: Look for impact damage to the underbody and battery enclosure, especially on a low-clearance car.
- Review records: Obtain accident, service, tire, and repair records. Pay special attention to Performance cars and vehicles fitted with aftermarket wheels or suspension parts.
- Confirm warranty: Verify remaining basic and battery/drive-unit coverage from the original delivery date, not merely the model year.
For a higher-stakes purchase, a used Tesla Model 3 inspection or EV battery health inspection can be worthwhile because a generic visual check may not answer questions about charging performance, underbody damage, accident repairs, or the battery system. The inspection should be performed by a provider equipped to evaluate EVs, not just a conventional pre-purchase checklist.

Everyday accessories worth considering
Accessories should solve a specific ownership problem rather than be added because the car is new. Buyers who regularly carry wet, muddy, or snowy items may want 2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland floor mats. Confirm that the mats fit the refreshed body style and the vehicle’s model year before ordering; older Model 3 mats are not automatically interchangeable.
A Model 3 screen protector can help protect the large center display from scratches, while a Tesla Model 3 trunk organizer can keep loose items from moving through the front and rear cargo areas. These are convenience purchases, not required equipment.
Owners or shops lifting the car should use Tesla’s specified lifting points and procedures. Tesla Model 3 jack pad pucks may help position a lift correctly, but they do not make unsafe lifting acceptable. Verify fitment and follow the official lifting guidance before any wheel, tire, or underbody work.
Strengths and weaknesses at a glance
| Strengths | Weaknesses and cautions |
|---|---|
| Excellent efficiency, especially in Long Range RWD form | EPA range is not guaranteed real-world highway range |
| Strong acceleration in every version | Performance and larger-wheel cars can cost more to keep on tires and wheels |
| Integrated route planning and Supercharger access | Charging speed varies with temperature, state of charge, and site conditions |
| Quieter, more refined cabin than earlier Model 3 versions | Touchscreen dependence can be distracting or unfamiliar |
| Front trunk, rear cargo area, and folding seats | Low clearance and sedan-like access are not ideal for every load |
| Over-the-air software updates | Hardware and regional limits mean software cannot add every feature to every car |
| Few conventional powertrain service requirements | Tires, alignment, glass, suspension, cameras, and collision repairs remain expensive concerns |
| Performance version has serious chassis and braking hardware | Its firmer ride and consumable costs make it less sensible for some commuters |
Who should buy a 2024 Model 3 Highland?
The Highland is a strong fit for a driver who can charge conveniently, values efficiency and quick response, appreciates integrated navigation and charging, and is comfortable with a software-led cabin. It is especially attractive when the buyer can verify the exact configuration and finds a car with good tires, clean underbody condition, complete records, and meaningful warranty remaining.
It is a weaker fit for someone who requires native CarPlay or Android Auto, frequently drives on severely damaged roads, needs SUV-like loading flexibility or ground clearance, or wants every vehicle function to have a physical button. The Performance version deserves a separate decision because its running costs and ride are meaningfully different from those of the efficient RWD cars.

A VIN-specific inspection and a careful check of tires, charging, software, recalls, and warranty will tell you far more than the headline range number.
Frequently Asked Questions
What does Highland mean on a Tesla Model 3?
Highland is Tesla-community shorthand for the refreshed Model 3 introduced for the 2024 model year. Tesla generally identifies it as Model 3 2024+, so Highland is not an official trim name.
How far can the 2024 Model 3 Highland go on one charge?
The commonly documented 2024 U.S. ranges are about 272 miles for Rear-Wheel Drive, 363 miles for Long Range RWD, 341 miles for Long Range AWD, and 296 miles for Performance. Wheel choice and conditions can change the rating and real-world results.
Does the 2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland have Apple CarPlay or Android Auto?
No. Contemporary 2024 road-test coverage reports that the Model 3 does not offer native Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. Tesla uses its own navigation, Bluetooth, media, app, and streaming systems.
How should I check a used 2024 Model 3 Highland for recalls?
Check the vehicle’s 17-character VIN through NHTSA’s recall lookup, then confirm the in-car software version and Tesla service history where available. Recall completion cannot be assumed from the model year or an OTA remedy announcement.
What maintenance does a 2024 Model 3 need?
Tesla recommends cabin-filter replacement every two years, annual wiper replacement, tire rotation every 6,250 miles or as needed, brake-caliper cleaning annually or every 12,500 miles in salted areas, and a brake-fluid health check every four years.
The Bottom Line
The 2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland is a significantly more refined Model 3, but “Highland” is not a trim level. Verify the exact drivetrain, battery, wheels, equipment, charging support, recall status, tire condition, and remaining warranty before buying. Long Range RWD favors efficiency and range, AWD adds traction, and Performance adds serious capability at a higher running cost.
