It replaces the Z400 in Kawasaki’s U.S. lineup and adds useful torque, refreshed styling, updated ergonomics, and more equipment without becoming intimidatingly large or heavy.
The standard Z500 is the value choice. The Z500 SE has the same basic engine and chassis but adds a TFT display, USB-C outlet, LED turn signals, styling parts, and several protection accessories. Before buying a used example, verify the VIN against the 2025 clutch-release-shaft recall.

Power and torque figures are Kawasaki’s published claims, not independent dynamometer results. Kawasaki also does not publish an EPA fuel-economy figure in the cited 2024 specification material, so a precise riding range should not be assumed from the tank size alone.
1. It is a larger, longer-stroke version of the Z400 formula
The Z500 is not an entirely new motorcycle concept. It is Kawasaki’s updated, larger-displacement interpretation of the approachable Z400 platform. Its 451cc engine retains the liquid-cooled, DOHC, eight-valve parallel-twin layout but gains displacement primarily through a 6.8 mm increase in stroke.

- Meets or Exceeds FMVSS-218 and DOT Safety Standards
The engine uses a 70.0 mm bore and 58.6 mm stroke, dual 32 mm throttle bodies, an 11.3:1 compression ratio, and a six-speed gearbox. Kawasaki says the displacement increase also required revisions to the crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, intake and exhaust components, and balancer shaft.
That matters because the Z500 is intended to provide more useful road-going torque rather than simply chase a higher peak-power number. It remains a relatively compact motorcycle, but it has more engine capacity for freeway commuting, carrying a larger rider, and accelerating out of corners than the outgoing Z400.
2. The engine is approachable rather than aggressive
Kawasaki lists 51.0 hp at 10,000 rpm and 31.7 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm. Those numbers place the Z500 in the practical middleweight category, not the high-performance streetfighter class. It is designed to be usable at ordinary road speeds, with enough reserve for normal U.S. freeway riding and recreational back-road use.
Cycle News described the engine during its launch evaluation as smooth and linear, with enough performance for freeway merging and comfortable 70-mph cruising in sixth gear. That is a road-test impression, not a promise for every rider. Wind, elevation, rider weight, luggage, gearing, traffic, and the condition of a particular motorcycle all affect acceleration and cruising comfort.
The extra torque should make the Z500 less dependent on constant downshifting than a smaller beginner bike. It is still a motorcycle that rewards using the gearbox, especially when brisk acceleration is needed, but its power delivery is intended to be predictable instead of startling.
Assist-and-slipper clutch
The assist-and-slipper clutch is one of the Z500’s most useful rider-friendly features. The assist cam helps reduce the clutch-spring load, making the lever easier to pull. The slipper function helps manage excessive back torque during abrupt downshifts, reducing the likelihood of unwanted rear-wheel disturbance when a rider selects a lower gear too quickly.
It does not replace smooth clutch technique or proper downshift practice. It does, however, reduce hand effort in traffic and adds a useful margin during imperfect downshifts.
3. ABS is standard on the U.S. model
Both U.S.-market versions—the Z500 ABS and Z500 SE ABS—include ABS on the front and rear brakes. The front brake uses a single 310 mm semi-floating disc and a two-piston caliper. The rear brake uses a 220 mm disc and a single-piston caliper.
ABS can help prevent wheel lock during hard braking or on compromised pavement, but it does not eliminate stopping-distance limits. Tire condition, road surface, rider reaction, speed, following distance, and braking technique still matter. Riders should practice progressive braking in a controlled environment rather than waiting for an emergency to discover how the system feels.

The cited U.S. specifications do not list traction control or selectable ride modes. The Z500’s electronic equipment is comparatively straightforward: ABS, an economical-riding indicator, and smartphone-related connectivity.
4. It is genuinely light and low for a middleweight
Kawasaki lists a 30.9-inch seat height and a 366.0-pound curb weight for the standard model. The 50-state specification is listed at 368.2 pounds. The Z500 SE weighs approximately four pounds more, with Kawasaki listing 370.4 pounds before the 50-state adjustment.

A low curb weight also helps during U-turns, low-speed corrections, and stops on uneven pavement.
A 30.9-inch seat does not guarantee that every rider will flat-foot the motorcycle. Inseam length, footwear, seat width, suspension sag, and the angle of the ground all influence reach. The useful conclusion is that the Z500 is a strong candidate for riders seeking a relatively low, light motorcycle—not that it fits every body identically.
5. The chassis favors nimble street riding
The Z500 uses a high-tensile-steel trellis frame, a 54.1-inch wheelbase, 24.5 degrees of rake, and 3.6 inches of trail. The layout combines a compact overall footprint with a swingarm arrangement intended to preserve stability as well as agility.
Suspension consists of a 41 mm conventional telescopic fork with 4.7 inches of travel and a horizontal back-link rear shock with 5.1 inches of travel. The rear shock offers five-way spring-preload adjustment. The front fork is not externally adjustable, and the rear shock’s adjustment is limited to spring preload; there is no separate compression or rebound adjustment listed in the cited specifications.

Kawasaki describes the chassis as supporting light steering and stability. In its road test, Cycle News found the Z500 quick and agile while remaining stable through faster sweepers. That makes the bike well suited to urban riding, commuting, and ordinary winding-road use. It is not equipped or configured as a dedicated track motorcycle.
6. The riding position is upright and city-friendly
The 2024 redesign changes more than the bodywork. Kawasaki reshaped the seat, slimmed the fuel tank, revised the footpeg placement, and fitted a wide handlebar. Together, those changes create a relatively upright rider triangle that should be less demanding than the forward-leaning position of a fully faired sportbike.
Cycle News reported a comfortable riding position for a 6-foot-1-inch tester during its short launch ride. That is useful context, but it is not a fit guarantee. Riders with different inseams, torso lengths, shoulder widths, or flexibility may experience the bar, seat, and peg relationship differently.

The 3.7-gallon tank is appropriate for commuting and recreational riding. Because Kawasaki does not provide an EPA fuel-economy figure in the cited material, buyers should avoid treating the tank capacity as a guaranteed range. Real-world fuel use depends heavily on speed, traffic, temperature, terrain, payload, and riding style.

7. The standard model already includes useful technology
The standard Z500 is not a bare-bones motorcycle. Its high-contrast full-LCD instrument panel includes:
- Tachometer and speedometer
- Gear-position display
- Fuel gauge
- Trip meters
- Remaining-range information
- Current and average fuel consumption
- Coolant-temperature information
- Clock
- Service indicator
- Bluetooth-related notifications
- Economical-riding indicator
That equipment makes the standard model a better value than its simple appearance might suggest. The display is functional and information-rich, even though it does not have the visual polish of the SE’s color TFT.
RIDEOLOGY THE APP connectivity
Bluetooth connectivity works through Kawasaki’s RIDEOLOGY THE APP. Kawasaki lists vehicle-information viewing, riding-log functions, notifications, communication sharing, and maintenance-log functions among the app’s capabilities.
Smartphone connectivity is a convenience feature, not a substitute for safe riding. Kawasaki warns that the app is not intended for use while operating the motorcycle. Configure the phone and review information before riding, then keep attention on traffic and road conditions.
8. The Z500 SE is mainly an equipment and appearance upgrade
The Z500 SE shares the standard motorcycle’s fundamental engine, frame, brakes, suspension design, and road-going performance. Its main advantages are equipment, styling, and included accessories rather than a mechanical performance increase.
The SE adds:
- Full-color TFT instrument display
- USB-C outlet
- LED turn signals
- Under-cowl
- Smoke-colored meter cover
- Radiator screen
- Frame sliders
- Pillion seat cover/rear-seat cowl
- Tank pad
- Knee pads
Cycle News characterized the SE as mechanically equivalent to the standard bike, with approximately four pounds of additional weight. The decision therefore comes down to whether the TFT, USB-C outlet, lighting, appearance parts, and included protection accessories justify the premium for your use.
The 2024 U.S. MSRP was $5,599 for the Z500 ABS and $6,299 for the Z500 SE ABS—a $700 difference before destination charges, dealer fees, taxes, registration, and other costs. Those are historical launch MSRPs, not current used-market values or a statement about remaining dealer inventory. Availability and pricing should be checked by location and date.
Which version makes more sense?
| Choose the standard Z500 if… | Choose the Z500 SE if… |
|---|---|
| You want the lowest purchase price. | You specifically want the color TFT and USB-C outlet. |
| The LCD display meets your needs. | You prefer the SE’s styling and added lighting. |
| You plan to choose your own accessories. | You value the included sliders, tank pad, knee pads, and seat cowl. |
| You want the same core performance for less money. | The factory-installed extras would otherwise be purchased separately. |
The SE’s included accessories may make the price difference easier to justify, but do not assume every accessory is equally valuable to every rider. For example, a solo commuter may value the USB-C outlet and display more than the pillion cowl, while a rider concerned about low-speed tip-overs may place greater value on the included sliders.

For a standard bike, model-specific 2024 Kawasaki Z500 frame sliders can be worth considering for low-speed tip-over protection, provided the listing confirms the exact 2024 model and U.S. fitment. Sliders cannot prevent all crash damage and must be installed correctly; they are not a substitute for riding skill or protective gear.
The SE’s tank pad and knee pads can also be purchased as separate accessories for the standard model. If protecting painted contact areas is important, compare the cost and fit of 2024 Kawasaki Z500 tank pads and knee grip pads before assuming that aftermarket parts will fit correctly. The final tracked product links and availability should be verified at publication time.
9. Styling and lighting received a substantial update
The 2024 Z500 adopts sharper, Sugomi-inspired Z-series bodywork. The redesign includes a triple LED headlight arrangement, LED taillight, updated mirrors, and a new seat shape. The result is a contemporary streetfighter appearance rather than the look of a stripped-down commuter motorcycle.
The U.S. standard model was offered in Candy Lime Green/Metallic Flat Spark Black/Metallic Graphite Gray. The SE was offered in Candy Persimmon Red/Metallic Flat Spark Black/Metallic Matte Graphenesteel Gray.
Styling does not change the motorcycle’s measurable performance, but it is a legitimate part of the buying decision. The Z500 is aimed at riders who want the upright practicality of a naked bike without giving up the aggressive visual identity associated with Kawasaki’s Z range.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Used buyers must check the clutch-release-shaft recall
This is the most important used-bike issue in the research. NHTSA campaign 25V-146 covers certain 2024 Kawasaki Z500 ABS and Z500 SE ABS motorcycles, along with covered 2024 Ninja 500 models.
According to NHTSA’s March 11, 2025 acknowledgment, the clutch-release shaft may not have been properly welded. It could allow the clutch lever to break apart, potentially causing loss of clutch disengagement. That could disable the motorcycle and increase crash risk. Kawasaki’s remedy was replacement of the clutch-release shaft by an authorized dealer at no charge.
The NHTSA document identifies 3,742 potentially affected motorcycles across the covered Ninja 500 and Z500 models. Owner notification letters were expected to be mailed March 24, 2025. Those dates establish the recall process, not the repair status of a specific motorcycle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDo not assume that every 2024 Z500 was repaired. Verify the VIN with Kawasaki, NHTSA, or an authorized Kawasaki dealer before completing a purchase. If the repair is open, arrange the no-charge dealer remedy before riding the motorcycle. A seller’s verbal assurance is not a substitute for VIN-based confirmation.
Used 2024 Z500 buying checklist
After checking the recall, inspect the motorcycle as you would any used bike:
- Confirm the exact model. Identify whether it is a standard Z500 ABS or Z500 SE ABS, and verify the model year and market specification.
- Check the VIN and recall status. Specifically ask about NHTSA campaign 25V-146 and request documentation if the repair has been completed.
- Review service records. Look for scheduled maintenance, fluid changes, chain service, tire replacements, and dealer invoices.
- Inspect for crash or tip-over damage. Examine bar ends, levers, mirrors, engine covers, foot controls, frame areas, fork tubes, wheels, and radiator mounting points.
- Check the chain and sprockets. Look for excessive slack, tight spots, hooked sprocket teeth, rust, and neglected lubrication.
- Inspect the tires. Check tread, age, cracking, uneven wear, puncture repairs, and whether the sizes match the manufacturer’s specification.
- Test the controls. The clutch should disengage cleanly, the throttle should return properly, the brakes should feel consistent, and the steering should move smoothly without notchiness.
- Check the electronics. Confirm the display, lights, indicators, ABS warning behavior, USB-C outlet if fitted, and Bluetooth-related functions.
- Look at accessory installation. Genuine or aftermarket sliders, tank pads, electrical accessories, and bodywork should be secure and free of wiring or fastener problems.
- Arrange a professional inspection when uncertain. A pre-purchase inspection can cost less than discovering hidden crash damage or neglected maintenance after the sale.
What the Z500 does not promise
The available material supports calling the Z500 manageable, light, low, nimble, and highway-capable for normal road use. It does not support calling it maintenance-free, exceptionally reliable, suitable for every beginner, or capable of a specific fuel range.

It also lacks some equipment found on more expensive motorcycles, including listed traction control, selectable ride modes, and adjustable front-fork damping. Those omissions are not necessarily flaws in this price category; they are part of how Kawasaki keeps the motorcycle relatively simple and affordable.

Who should buy the 2024 Kawasaki Z500?
The Z500 is a strong match for a rider who wants:
- A first motorcycle with more long-term road capability than a small-displacement single
- A low seat and manageable curb weight
- Standard ABS
- Upright ergonomics for commuting
- Enough performance for normal freeway merging and cruising
- A modern naked-bike appearance
- Simple, predictable parallel-twin power delivery
It may be less suitable for someone seeking the strongest acceleration, extensive suspension adjustability, advanced rider aids, long-distance wind protection, or a full-size touring platform. A test ride remains the best way to evaluate reach, knee angle, clutch feel, wind exposure, and engine response.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much horsepower does the 2024 Kawasaki Z500 have?
Kawasaki lists 51.0 hp at 10,000 rpm and 31.7 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm. These are manufacturer claims, not independent dynamometer measurements.
Is ABS standard on the 2024 Kawasaki Z500?
Yes. The U.S.-specification Z500 ABS and Z500 SE ABS include ABS on both brakes.
What is the difference between the Z500 and Z500 SE?
The core engine and chassis are essentially the same. The SE adds a full-color TFT display, USB-C outlet, LED turn signals, an under-cowl, smoke-colored meter cover, radiator screen, frame sliders, tank pad, knee pads, and a pillion seat cover/rear-seat cowl.

It can be a strong beginner candidate because it has a low seat, relatively light weight, predictable power delivery, an assist-and-slipper clutch, and standard ABS. It is not automatically suitable for every new rider; fit, training, throttle control, and comfort should be evaluated in person.
Does the 2024 Kawasaki Z500 have traction control?
Traction control is not listed in the cited U.S. specifications. The listed electronic features include ABS, an economical-riding indicator, and smartphone connectivity.
Is there a recall on the 2024 Kawasaki Z500?
NHTSA campaign 25V-146 covers certain 2024 Z500 ABS and Z500 SE ABS motorcycles. The clutch-release shaft may not have been properly welded. Verify repair status by VIN because not every motorcycle is necessarily affected or repaired.
The Bottom Line
The 2024 Kawasaki Z500 is best understood as a practical, approachable middleweight naked bike—not a miniature superbike. Its strongest arguments are the low seat, light weight, standard ABS, smooth 451cc twin, useful highway ability, and updated Z-series styling. The standard model offers the better value, while the SE is worthwhile when its TFT, USB-C outlet, styling parts, and included protection accessories match your priorities. For a used purchase, recall verification and a careful inspection matter more than the trim badge.
