2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E First Drive Review: A Measured Step Forward

The 2024 Mustang Mach-E is an evolution, not a redesign. See how battery, drivetrain, range, charging and trim shape the choice.

The 2024 Ford Mustang Mach-E is an incremental improvement, not a reinvention: its battery, drivetrain and trim determine whether the priority is range, all-weather traction or acceleration. In a first drive in Seattle, the car felt composed and quick, but the limited setting and time mean those impressions are not a substitute for a full road test. The most useful takeaway is to match the configuration to how you charge and drive.

What changed for 2024—and what this first drive can tell you

The 2024 Mach-E remains a five-seat electric SUV offered with rear-wheel drive (RWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD). The first-drive report, published July 13, 2025, presents the updates as measured gains in range, charging and sustained performance rather than a ground-up redesign. Its drive took place in Seattle under the constraints of a brief, controlled event, so the ride and acceleration comments are impressions—not conclusions from long-term ownership or extensive independent testing. Car and Driver’s 2024 review likewise notes it had not run the model on its 75-mph highway fuel-economy route.

Model-year details below are anchored to Ford’s 2024 Mustang Mach-E order guide, dated April 30, 2024. This matters because the first-drive page includes references to a 2025 GT and says the Rally trim would be covered separately; those references do not make its title or specification discussion a 2025 review.

Which battery, drivetrain and range fit your use?

Ford lists 72 kWh of usable capacity for the Standard Range battery and 91 kWh for the Extended Range battery. The first-drive report gives the following configuration-specific range estimates. They are not promises of real-world distance: temperature, speed, terrain, tires and driving style can affect how far a charge takes you.

Configuration Usable battery capacity Range estimate reported in the first drive Output reported in the first drive
Standard Range RWD 72 kWh (Ford 2024 order guide) 250 miles 264 hp; 387 lb-ft
Standard Range AWD 72 kWh (Ford 2024 order guide) 230 miles 325 hp; 500 lb-ft
Extended Range RWD 91 kWh (Ford 2024 order guide) 320 miles 290 hp; 387 lb-ft
Extended Range AWD 91 kWh (Ford 2024 order guide) 300 miles 365 hp; 500 lb-ft
GT 91 kWh (Ford 2024 order guide) 280 miles 480 hp; 600 lb-ft before the cited Performance Upgrade

Range and output figures in the table are those reported by David C. Hayman’s July 13, 2025 first-drive article; battery capacities are from Ford’s 2024 order guide. Check the individual vehicle’s equipment and EPA label when comparing listings, since trim and configuration affect the applicable estimate.

  • Prioritize distance between charges: the report’s highest estimate is 320 miles for Extended Range RWD.
  • Need AWD: the reported estimates are 230 miles for Standard Range AWD and 300 miles for Extended Range AWD. AWD brings a range trade-off in the listed comparisons.
  • Want the quickest, most powerful version: GT is the performance-oriented choice, but its reported 280-mile estimate is lower than the Extended Range RWD and AWD figures.

Ford’s May 2, 2023 announcement said Standard Range models would use LFP batteries and gave targeted EPA estimates of up to 250 miles for RWD and 226 miles for eAWD. Ford labeled those as projections and said actual range varies with conditions and use; they should not be substituted for the later, configuration-specific figures above. Ford’s 2023 announcement is useful historical context, not a verified 2024 range test.

How does the Mach-E drive?

The first-drive article describes the 2024 as quick and more capable of sustaining performance, consistent with the range of reported outputs from 264 hp in Standard Range RWD to 480 hp in GT before the cited upgrade. Those numbers are specifications reported by the article, not independently measured results from the Seattle event. It attributes the GT Performance Upgrade’s 700 lb-ft of torque and 3.3-second 0–60 mph claim to Ford.

Car and Driver separately recorded 3.3 seconds from 0 to 60 mph in its test of a 2024 Rally. That is an independent result for the Rally it tested, not confirmation of the GT claim. The publication describes the Mach-E as quiet and smooth-riding, but those are its editorial assessments rather than a guarantee of how every trim, wheel and road surface will feel.

What charging is like at home and on the road

Home charging and public fast charging serve different needs. Ford’s order guide documents charge scheduling and FordPass features for checking state of charge, setting departure times, scheduling charging, and locating and paying for charging. The right home setup depends on your electrical service and daily driving, while a road trip depends on finding compatible DC fast chargers and allowing time for charging stops.

Home charging

Car and Driver says the included mobile charging unit can plug into a 120-volt household outlet; Ford’s stated figure, as quoted by the publication, is up to 30 miles of range per night. On a 240-volt outlet, the unit can replenish up to 80 percent overnight, according to Car and Driver. These are “up to” descriptions, not guaranteed results for every outlet, vehicle, installation or household schedule. Car and Driver also says Ford sells a higher-power home charging station that requires installation by a certified electrician.

If you are shopping for a home EV charging station for a Mustang Mach-E, treat “Ford Mustang Mach-E home EV charger” as a category search rather than a specific product recommendation. Verify the vehicle’s connector, the EVSE’s specifications, your home circuit capacity and installation requirements before buying; the available information does not establish a particular third-party model’s compatibility or current availability.

DC fast charging

The first-drive article reports 10-to-80-percent DC charging times of 32 minutes for Standard Range and 36 minutes for Extended Range. These are reported figures, not a guarantee of the time for a particular stop. Battery temperature, charger output, state of charge and other conditions can affect charging speed. Plan road trips around the car’s actual charging performance and the chargers available on your route, rather than treating a single quoted time as universal.

Does it work as a family and cargo vehicle?

Car and Driver lists 29 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats and 60 cubic feet with the seats folded. That gives the five-seat SUV useful flexibility for passengers and larger loads, although the figures do not establish how a particular stroller, suitcase or bulky item will fit. Ford’s order guide also lists a 15.5-inch touchscreen, selectable Engage, Whisper and Unbridle drive modes, one-pedal driving, and a drainable front trunk.

How to decide whether a Mach-E configuration is right for you

There is no single best version for every buyer. Compare the specific vehicles available to you on the factors that change daily use:

  • Range: choose the battery and drivetrain combination that leaves an appropriate buffer for your typical routes and weather.
  • Traction: decide whether AWD is important enough to accept the lower reported range versus the comparable RWD configuration.
  • Acceleration: compare the trim’s output and performance priorities rather than assuming every Mach-E drives alike.
  • Charging access: consider whether you can charge at home, what electrical installation may be needed, and how public fast charging fits your regular travel.
  • Space: assess rear-seat and cargo needs in person; the published cargo volumes are useful reference points, not a fit test for your belongings.
  • Price: compare the actual vehicle and equipment being offered. The cited material does not establish current transaction prices or incentive eligibility.
