Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R is a factory-built desert truck with sports-car acceleration, not a sensible everyday F-150. Its supercharged 5.2-liter V8 now produces 720 horsepower, while revised FOX Live Valve dampers, quicker steering, 37-inch tires, and a sophisticated four-wheel-drive system make it unusually capable at speed off road. It also has a five-passenger cabin, a 5.5-foot bed, towing hardware, and the technology expected of a modern F-150.
That combination is the reason to buy one. The reasons not to are just as clear: a six-figure price, 12-mpg EPA combined fuel economy, premium-fuel requirements, a tested 6,090-pound curb weight, mediocre skidpad and braking results, high replacement-tire costs, and a body too wide for many trails and parking structures. The Raptor R is not the rational F-150. It is the most dramatic one.

What changed for 2024?
The 2024 update is more than a grille-and-badge exercise. Ford retained the Raptor R’s supercharged V8 but raised output from 700 to 720 horsepower. Ford attributes the gain to reduced intake losses and revised calibration. The official ratings are based on premium fuel and the SAE J1349 testing standard.
Torque remains 640 lb-ft, but Ford and independent reviewers describe the revised calibration as broadening the useful torque curve. That matters in a truck intended to accelerate over loose terrain, where predictable response can be more valuable than a single peak-output number.
The larger chassis change is the suspension. The 2024 truck uses revised electronically controlled FOX Live Valve dampers. MotorTrend describes separate spool-valve control for compression and rebound, while Ford’s technical material identifies continuously variable compression damping and long-travel FOX units. In practical terms, the system is intended to better control the body over changing terrain rather than simply make the truck softer or stiffer everywhere.

The front end received a refreshed grille and lighting treatment, a revised hood power bulge, and a new steel bumper. The bumper is winch-ready, although the Raptor R does not get the conventional F-150’s Pro Access tailgate.
720 horsepower in a 6,090-pound pickup
The Raptor R’s defining feature is its supercharged 5.2-liter V8. It sends 720 hp at 6,650 rpm and 640 lb-ft at 4,300 rpm through a 10-speed automatic transmission, a two-speed automatic four-wheel-drive system, and a 4.10 axle ratio. Low range uses a 2.64:1 ratio.
Car and Driver recorded a 0–60-mph time of 3.6 seconds, 0–100 mph in 9.1 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 12.0 seconds at 113 mph. The electronically limited top speed is 114 mph. Those are independent instrumented-test results, not universal guarantees: temperature, surface, fuel, tires, test procedure, and vehicle condition can all change the result. Even with that qualification, the acceleration is extraordinary for a full-size pickup.
The Raptor R’s straight-line speed can make it feel like a sports car for the first few seconds. Its cornering and braking performance make clear that it is not one. On its 37-inch all-terrain tires, Car and Driver measured 0.69 g on the skidpad and required 219 feet to stop from 70 mph. The truck’s mass, tall suspension, tire design, and off-road priorities explain those numbers.
That does not make the Raptor R inherently unsafe when driven within appropriate conditions and distances. It does mean the driver should not confuse rapid acceleration with sports-car handling. Leave more room for braking, be deliberate with lane changes, and remember that the truck’s most impressive performance occurs on terrain for which it was engineered—not on a tight road course.
Why the Raptor R works off road
The hardware is unusually complete from the factory. Standard equipment includes 37×12.5R17LT BFGoodrich All-Terrain T/A KO2 tires mounted on 17-inch forged aluminum beadlock-capable wheels. The truck has independent double-wishbone front suspension and a five-link coil-sprung rear suspension with a Panhard rod.

For the 37-inch-tire configuration, Ford lists:
- 13.1 inches of ground clearance
- 33.1 degrees of approach angle
- 24.9 degrees of departure angle
- 24.4 degrees of breakover angle
- 13.0 inches of front wheel travel
- 14.1 inches of rear wheel travel
The two-speed automatic four-wheel-drive system is supported by an electronically locking rear differential and a terrain-management system. Trail Control works as a low-speed off-road cruise control, while Trail 1-Pedal Drive can simplify throttle modulation on technical terrain. Trail Turn Assist tightens the turning path by braking an inside wheel. A 360-degree camera with split-view display helps the driver position the truck around rocks, ledges, and other obstacles that are difficult to see from the cab.
That mixture is what separates the Raptor R from a powerful street truck with aggressive tires. It has the suspension travel and damping for fast desert running, but also the low-range gearing, locking differential, camera views, and selectable controls needed for slower technical trails.
Car and Driver found the truck composed during high-speed desert driving and capable of controlled yaw in Baja mode. The same evaluation found it effective on a steep rocky trail. MotorTrend likewise reported that the revised truck felt precise and confidence-inspiring on packed dirt and sand, especially with the large tires aired down. These are controlled media-drive impressions rather than a long-term durability study, but they support the mechanical specifications.
The biggest off-road limitation is the truck itself
The Raptor R is built for open terrain, and its dimensions become a serious consideration away from it. Ford lists the truck at 96.0 inches wide including the mirrors and 87.0 inches wide without them. Overall height is 80.6 inches, and the turning circle is 50 feet.
That width is useful for stability at speed, but it can be difficult on narrow wooded trails, between closely spaced obstacles, in older parking garages, and on tight urban streets. Before buying, measure the entrance to your garage and the width of your regular trails. A 37-inch tire can clear an obstacle that would stop an ordinary pickup, but the body and mirrors still need to fit between the obstacles.
The same advice applies to public-road use. The Raptor R’s capabilities are difficult to use legally and safely at their limit on normal roads. Buyers are paying for a level of suspension control and traction that may be used only occasionally. That is not a defect; it is the central enthusiast trade-off.

Compared with a sports car, buggy, or heavily modified off-road truck, the Raptor R is remarkably practical. It is a SuperCrew five-passenger truck with a 5.5-foot bed, rear-seat space, a covered and climate-controlled cabin, towing systems, and a 36-gallon fuel tank.
Ford lists 52.8 cubic feet of cargo volume, 1,400 pounds of maximum payload, and 8,700 pounds of maximum conventional towing. Those figures are maximum ratings, not promises for every configuration. Occupants, cargo, trailer tongue weight, accessories, and the specific truck’s door-jamb certification label all affect what it can legally carry or tow. Check the label on the individual vehicle before loading it or selecting a trailer.
The payload figure is modest for a full-size pickup, and the Raptor R is not the right tool for routinely hauling heavy materials or maximizing trailer capacity. Its long-travel suspension, wide stance, large tires, and performance equipment are optimized for a different job. If work capability is the primary requirement, a conventional F-150 configuration is likely the better choice.

Cabin technology
The interior is recognizable as a high-spec F-150 rather than a stripped-down competition truck. Ford lists a 12-inch digital productivity display, a 12-inch SYNC 4 touchscreen, connected navigation, FordPass Connect, 5G Wi-Fi hotspot capability, a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system, adaptive cruise control, and Ford Co-Pilot360 safety systems.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Other listed equipment includes a 360-degree camera, Pro Trailer Hitch Assist, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, a 400-watt outlet, auxiliary switches, remote start, trailer-light checking, and over-the-air updates. These features make the Raptor R easier to live with and easier to use around a trailer than its desert-racing image suggests.
It is not the quietest or most refined luxury truck, however. The 37-inch all-terrain tires generate road noise, the wide body demands attention in tight spaces, and the performance hardware is always part of the vehicle’s character. The cabin is civilized, but the Raptor R never fully disguises its purpose.
Fuel economy and ownership costs
The EPA ratings are 10 mpg city, 15 mpg highway, and 12 mpg combined. Car and Driver recorded 12 mpg overall and 15 mpg on its 75-mph highway loop. With a 36-gallon tank, a simple calculation using the highway test result suggests a theoretical range of roughly 540 miles, but actual range will vary with speed, tire pressure, terrain, payload, weather, and how much fuel the driver keeps in reserve.
Ford specifies premium unleaded for the Raptor R. Fuel is only one part of the ownership equation. Ford’s technical information lists 11.5 quarts of engine oil for the Raptor R, compared with 6 quarts for the V6-powered Raptor. The 37-inch tires, specialized dampers, high-performance brakes, and potential underbody and suspension wear add further expense.

Owners who use the truck in mud, sand, or dusty desert conditions should also budget for cleanup and interior protection. 2024 F-150 Raptor R floor mats can be a sensible purchase, but use a year-and-trim-specific selector rather than assuming that every F-150 liner fits the Raptor R. The same principle applies to bed protection, recovery equipment, wheels, and suspension parts.
When the original tires eventually need replacement, start with the factory dimensions and load requirements. BFGoodrich KO2 37-inch tires in the 37×12.5R17LT size are a relevant replacement search, but verify the exact load rating, wheel compatibility, availability, and intended use before ordering. A replacement tire should match the vehicle’s specification; a different tread or size can affect clearance, noise, handling, gearing, and electronic-system behavior.
For owners considering recovery, towing, electrical, or performance additions, the genuine Ford Raptor accessories and Ford Performance parts catalog is a useful fitment starting point. Factory compatibility does not mean every modification is automatically covered under warranty, so retain installation records and check the warranty implications before changing the truck’s powertrain, suspension, wheels, tires, or control systems.
Price and value
Car and Driver listed a 2024 Raptor R base price of $112,460 and an as-tested price of $114,550, including a moonroof and spray-in bedliner. The publication identified the Raptor R equipment-group premium over the regular Raptor as $31,925.
Those are model-year and test-vehicle figures, not a current quote for every truck. When shopping, verify the original window sticker, destination charge, equipment group, dealer-installed accessories, dealer markup, and the vehicle’s current used-market price. A used Raptor R that has been modified or heavily driven off road should not be valued like an untouched example simply because both carry the same model name.

The value argument is about combination rather than conventional utility per dollar. There are cheaper ways to get acceleration, towing capacity, or off-road ability individually. The Raptor R combines a supercharged V8, long-travel suspension, 37-inch tires, four-wheel drive, a rear seat, a pickup bed, and factory calibration in one mass-produced vehicle. It arrives engineered as a system rather than assembled piecemeal through aftermarket fabrication.
That factory integration also matters to buyers who want a supported, serviceable vehicle rather than a project. It does not make the truck inexpensive, efficient, or indestructible, but it is a meaningful part of the Raptor R’s appeal.

The warranty is not a guarantee against competition damage. Ford warns that competition use, aftermarket modifications, and driving beyond the vehicle’s capabilities can affect warranty reimbursement. The Raptor R is engineered for severe off-road use, but repeated jumps, hard landings, rock strikes, and low-air-pressure operation can still damage components.
Before buying a used example, inspect or have a qualified technician inspect:
- Frame rails, crossmembers, skid plates, and underbody panels for impacts or deformation
- FOX dampers for leaks, dents, damaged mounts, or unusual noise
- Control arms, tie rods, ball joints, wheel bearings, and alignment
- Wheels and beadlock-capable hardware for bends, cracks, or damaged fasteners
- Tires for uneven wear, sidewall damage, repairs, and mismatched replacements
- Bumpers, recovery points, camera hardware, and wiring
- Transfer-case, differential, and transmission operation in every relevant drive mode
Also perform a VIN-specific recall check before purchase. General F-150 recall results should not automatically be treated as Raptor R-specific because campaigns can depend on the engine, axle, trailer equipment, build date, and other configuration details. The vehicle identification number is the final authority for the truck you are considering.
2024 Raptor R versus the regular Raptor
The regular Raptor is the more sensible performance choice for many buyers. The Raptor R adds the V8 experience, 20 horsepower over the previous Raptor R, and a distinctive level of straight-line drama, but it also adds a substantial price premium, higher fuel consumption, and greater running costs.
Choose the regular Raptor if you want the long-travel suspension, 37-inch-tire capability, SuperCrew practicality, and trail technology but do not specifically need the supercharged V8. Choose another F-150 configuration if towing, payload, maneuverability, or economy is more important than high-speed desert performance.
Should you buy the 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R?
Buy it if your priority is a factory-built, V8-powered desert truck that can carry five people, haul recreational equipment, and tow a conventional trailer. The revised dampers and steering make the 2024 update meaningful, and the combination of 720 horsepower, 37-inch tires, long wheel travel, four-wheel drive, and electronic off-road controls is difficult to replicate without building a truck yourself.

Skip it if you need a rational work truck. The Raptor R’s 1,400-pound payload, 8,700-pound maximum towing rating, 12-mpg combined fuel economy, 96-inch mirror-to-mirror width, and six-figure price all matter. A regular Raptor or another F-150 will make more sense for most daily drivers and commercial users.
The Raptor R succeeds because it refuses to optimize for only one role. It is far quicker than a normal pickup, more usable than a dedicated off-road buggy, and more capable at speed than most modified trucks. It is also expensive, thirsty, enormous, and excessive. Whether that is a flaw or the entire point depends on how much the buyer values the V8 and the factory-engineered experience.

Frequently Asked Questions
How fast is the 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R?
Car and Driver recorded 0–60 mph in 3.6 seconds, 0–100 mph in 9.1 seconds, and a 12.0-second quarter mile at 113 mph. Its electronically limited top speed is 114 mph. Results vary with conditions and should be treated as test-specific rather than guaranteed.
What fuel does the 2024 Raptor R require?
Ford specifies premium unleaded fuel for the supercharged 5.2-liter V8. EPA ratings are 10 mpg city, 15 mpg highway, and 12 mpg combined.
Is the Raptor R good for towing and hauling?
It can tow up to 8,700 pounds conventionally and has a listed maximum payload of 1,400 pounds, but those are maximum ratings. The actual limit depends on occupants, cargo, tongue weight, equipment, and the individual truck’s door-jamb certification label. It is not the best F-150 for maximizing work-truck payload or towing.
Does the 2024 Raptor R have a factory warranty?
For the U.S. market, Ford lists three years or 36,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage and five years or 60,000 miles of powertrain coverage, along with additional coverage for aluminum body panels, corrosion perforation, paint adhesion, and roadside assistance. Competition use and aftermarket modifications can affect warranty reimbursement.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What should I check on a used Raptor R?
Pay particular attention to the frame, skid plates, suspension, FOX dampers, steering components, wheels, 37-inch tires, alignment, bumpers, cameras, wiring, transfer case, differentials, and transmission. A VIN-specific recall search is also essential because not every F-150 campaign applies to every Raptor R.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: The 2024 Ford F-150 Raptor R is worth considering only when its extraordinary combination matters more than efficiency and conventional truck utility. It is a superb factory desert runner and an astonishingly quick pickup, but the price, fuel bill, width, braking, payload, and tire costs make the regular Raptor or another F-150 the better choice for most buyers.
