The 2024 Chevrolet Traverse RS is a midsize three-row SUV whose main advantage is space, not sports-car manners. In Car and Driver’s test of an all-wheel-drive RS, the cabin and cargo capacity impressed, but the turbocharged four-cylinder sounded coarse under load, initial throttle response felt sluggish, and slow steering made the large vehicle feel large. The RS is best understood as a roomy family hauler with sporty styling and useful powered seat-folding features—not a performance-focused crossover.
How much space does the Traverse RS have?
Chevrolet’s stated maximum cargo capacity is 98 cubic feet with the second- and third-row seats folded. Car and Driver’s specification panel for its 2024 AWD RS test vehicle lists 23 cubic feet behind the third row, 57 behind the second row, and 98 behind the first row. Those figures explain the “full-size space” shorthand: the Traverse remains a midsize SUV, but offers substantial room within that class.
Car and Driver describes the second and third rows as roomy and the third-row seating position as decent. The tested vehicle measured 204.5 inches long and 79.6 inches wide, dimensions that approach larger vehicles. Its unibody construction, however, is distinct from the truck-based construction common to full-size SUVs.
Seat access and cargo-mode changes
The RS has seven-passenger seating, with second-row captain’s chairs. Chevrolet says its SmartSlide design helps provide access to the third row, including when a child seat is installed. The RS also has one-touch second-row folding and power-folding third-row seats. There is one practical catch: the third row will not fold while the captain’s chairs are slid all the way back, so move them forward first when switching from passenger to cargo mode.

What does the RS trim add?
The RS is the appearance- and equipment-focused trim, not a separate high-performance powertrain. Chevrolet lists 22-inch high-gloss black aluminum wheels, blacked-out exterior accents, unique suspension tuning, a flat-bottom three-spoke steering wheel, red cabin accents, leather-appointed first- and second-row seating, and a panoramic sunroof. The RS comes standard with seven-passenger seating; the LS is standard with eight seats, while the LT can be configured for eight.
All 2024 Traverse trims share a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder and eight-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet rates the engine at 328 horsepower and 326 lb-ft of torque. All-wheel drive is available; the Z71 uses a distinct twin-clutch AWD system and adds off-road hardware. Properly equipped Traverse models are rated to tow up to 5,000 pounds, but passengers, cargo, options, and accessories reduce the available capacity.

How did the AWD RS drive in testing?
Car and Driver updated its review on September 28, 2024 with instrumented results for an AWD RS. The publication recorded 0–60 mph in 7.3 seconds, a 70–0 mph stopping distance of 178 feet, and 0.81 g on the skidpad. Its test vehicle weighed 4,865 pounds. These are results for that specific vehicle and test, not guarantees for every Traverse RS.
Car and Driver said the engine felt less strong than its output suggests, with sluggish initial throttle response and noticeable engine noise even during calmer driving. The publication found good body control and a firm, responsive brake pedal, but described the steering as slow. It judged the RS somewhat sharper than the Z71 because of the RS’s more aggressive wheel-and-tire package, while finding neither especially engaging. Its reviewers also criticized the cabin materials for a higher trim.

Fuel economy in the published test
For the AWD RS test vehicle, Car and Driver lists EPA estimates of 19 mpg city, 24 highway, and 21 combined. The publication observed 22 mpg during its test. The observed figure reflects that test’s driving and conditions; it is not a promise of everyday fuel economy.
What screens and driver-assistance features are included?
Chevrolet lists a standard 17.7-inch center touchscreen, an 11-inch configurable driver information display, and six USB ports. Wireless charging and a Wi-Fi hotspot are listed as available. Standard Chevy Safety Assist is accompanied by listed driver-assistance features including adaptive cruise control, HD surround vision, rear cross-traffic braking, blind-zone steering assist, and reverse automatic braking. These systems do not replace the driver’s responsibility, and Chevrolet directs owners to the manual for feature limitations. OnStar and connected services may require a service plan.

Super Cruise requires particular care when checking equipment. Chevrolet’s launch announcement described it as available, while Car and Driver’s September 2024 review said it was standard on the RS. Confirm the equipment on the specific vehicle’s window sticker or build sheet, and check current subscription and service terms rather than assuming availability or included service.

A 2026 comparison by Edmunds republished by the Associated Press favors the Traverse for room and luggage capacity over the 2026 Ford Explorer, and the Explorer for driving enjoyment and fuel economy. That is useful later-model context, not a direct comparison of the 2024 RS test vehicle.
Verdict: Is the 2024 Traverse RS right for you?
Choose the Traverse RS if three-row room, useful cargo capacity, powered seat-folding, and the RS’s dark styling matter more than agile handling or a refined engine sound. If you want a more engaging drive, compare steering feel and powertrain refinement in alternatives before deciding. The strongest reason to buy this Traverse is its practical space; the RS’s sporty appearance does not turn it into a sport SUV.
