The BMW 5 Series is the better all-around buy for most drivers, while the Mercedes-Benz E-Class is the better choice for buyers who prioritize ride comfort, cabin ambience, and a more theatrical technology experience. In the U.S.-market 2024 lineup, the BMW offers a lower entry price, more trunk space, slightly stronger published four-cylinder acceleration, and a particularly compelling six-cylinder 540i xDrive. The E-Class counters with standard all-wheel drive, a comfort-focused luxury brief, available air suspension and rear-axle steering, and a more lounge-like interior.
Both sedans were redesigned for 2024, so this is not a comparison between an old model and a new one. The comparison below covers the gasoline BMW 530i, 530i xDrive, and 540i xDrive against the Mercedes-Benz E 350 4MATIC and E 450 4MATIC in the United States. The electric BMW i5 is discussed only as a related 5 Series option, not as a direct gasoline-powered rival.
Scope note: specifications, prices, equipment, and safety information in this article refer to U.S.-market 2024 sedans. BMW launch prices exclude the separately listed destination charge; the cited Mercedes-Benz prices include destination. Pricing is historical launch MSRP, not a current used-car value or transaction-price estimate.
Quick verdict
| Category | Advantage | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Entry price | BMW 5 Series | The rear-wheel-drive 530i started lower, and the all-wheel-drive 530i xDrive remained below the E 350 4MATIC at launch. |

2024 pricing and lineup: BMW gives buyers more ways to choose
BMW launched the 2024 5 Series sedan with three gasoline configurations:
#1 Best Overall
- Strong Grip & Safety Upgrade: Product adhesion is strong, can be effectively fixed on the floor, the use of the process is not easy to shift, safe and more secure. These floor mats compatible with bmw 5 series g60 2024 2025 2026.
- Unique & Personalized Design: The special design keeps all items inside the mats, helps your car floor resists damage from sand mud water dirt oil gas battery acid and everything else, keep carpet clean and dry, easily wiped clean,Anti-slip liner floor mat , increases your vehicle's resale value .
- High Quality Material & Tasteless: The product uses high quality rubber material, has the corrosion resistance and not easy to deform the characteristic, will not bring the peculiar smell in the vehicle, maintains the vehicle environment air fresh.
- All-weather Protection Car Floor Liners: The product is made from odorless rubber and is designed to prevent the deformation of high temperature or low temperature. The surface is like a tire pattern design, which can enhance the anti slip function.
- Easy To Clean : Clean the dirt and mud on the pad only by using a common hose; without maintenance, the durability of the product itself can be maintained for a long time.
- 530i: $57,900 MSRP, rear-wheel drive, plus BMW’s separately listed $995 destination and handling charge.
- 530i xDrive: $60,200 MSRP, all-wheel drive, plus the $995 destination and handling charge.
- 540i xDrive: $64,900 MSRP, all-wheel drive, plus the $995 destination and handling charge.
BMW also launched the electric i5 eDrive40 at $66,800 before destination. It belongs in a broader 5 Series shopping discussion, but its battery-electric powertrain makes it an alternative to the gasoline cars rather than a direct comparison with the E 350 or E 450.
The 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class sedan range began with the E 350 4MATIC at approximately $62,300 including destination, according to Edmunds. The six-cylinder E 450 4MATIC started at approximately $68,100 including destination. Mercedes made all-wheel drive standard across the cited E-Class sedan range, which makes the E 350 4MATIC a closer drivetrain match for the BMW 530i xDrive than for the rear-wheel-drive 530i.
On a rough launch-price comparison, a BMW 530i xDrive with its destination charge totaled about $61,195 before options, or approximately $1,100 below the cited E 350 starting figure. A 540i xDrive with destination was about $65,895, roughly $2,200 below the cited E 450 starting figure. Those differences are useful for positioning the cars, but they should not be treated as an exact value comparison: option packages, wheel sizes, dealer pricing, taxes, and equipment can change the final price substantially.
Which starting price matters most?
Choose the 530i if keeping the initial price down and having rear-wheel-drive availability matter most. Choose the 530i xDrive if you want the BMW’s four-cylinder configuration with all-weather traction. The E 350’s standard 4MATIC system makes it simpler for buyers who do not want to decide between rear- and all-wheel drive, but its higher starting point reduces its value advantage at the entry level.

Powertrains and performance
BMW 530i versus Mercedes E 350
The BMW 530i and 530i xDrive use a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder paired with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system and an eight-speed automatic transmission. BMW lists 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque. Its published 0–60-mph estimates are 5.9 seconds for the rear-wheel-drive 530i and 5.8 seconds for the 530i xDrive.
The Mercedes-Benz E 350 also uses a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with a 48-volt integrated starter-generator and a nine-speed automatic transmission. Mercedes lists 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft from the combustion engine, along with electric boost figures of 20 horsepower and 148 lb-ft. Those electric-assistance figures should not simply be added to the engine’s output as though they were a conventional combined horsepower and torque rating.
At this level, BMW has the clearer performance advantage on the published acceleration figures, although the difference is modest. The E 350 is not slow; it is simply positioned as the smoother, more relaxed entry point into the E-Class range. The BMW feels like the more persuasive choice for a driver who wants a luxury sedan that responds quickly without paying for a six-cylinder engine.
BMW 540i xDrive versus Mercedes E 450
The BMW 540i xDrive moves to a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six with mild-hybrid assistance. It produces 375 horsepower and up to 398 lb-ft of torque, and BMW quotes 0–60 mph in 4.4 seconds. This is the performance standout of the gasoline comparison: it provides genuinely rapid acceleration while retaining the traditional 5 Series sedan format.

The E 450 4MATIC also uses a 3.0-liter inline-six mild-hybrid powertrain. Mercedes lists 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft before electric boost. Its character is more about smooth, composed thrust than about advertising a sporty edge. Edmunds independently recorded 4.7 seconds to 60 mph for an E 450 in testing. That result is useful context, but it is not directly interchangeable with BMW’s manufacturer estimate because the testing methods and conditions differ.
The 540i xDrive is the better pick for drivers who actively seek quick responses and stronger acceleration. The E 450 makes more sense for someone who wants six-cylinder smoothness without turning the E-Class into a conspicuously sporty sedan.
Fuel economy: a small BMW advantage, with configuration caveats
BMW’s cited technical data lists the 530i at 29 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. The same technical data lists the 530i xDrive at 30 mpg combined. That unusual-looking difference is precisely why buyers should check the EPA label and final equipment configuration for the individual car rather than assume that every 5 Series has one universal fuel-economy rating.
Edmunds lists the 2024 E-Class at 27 mpg combined, with the exact result varying by trim and equipment. The four-cylinder BMW is therefore generally the more efficiency-oriented choice on the available published figures. Wheel size, tires, drivetrain, option content, and certification details can affect the number attached to a specific vehicle.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe six-cylinder cars will naturally be less focused on fuel economy than their four-cylinder counterparts. Neither manufacturer’s number should be presented as a guarantee of real-world results; traffic, weather, speed, load, and driving style matter.
Size, passenger space, and cargo
The redesigned BMW is a large midsize sedan. It measures 199.2 inches long, 74.8 inches wide, and 59.6 inches high, with a 117.9-inch wheelbase. BMW describes that wheelbase as class-leading and uses a 40:20:40 split-folding rear seatback, giving owners more flexibility than a simple 60:40 split when carrying passengers and long items together.
BMW lists 18.4 cubic feet of luggage capacity for both the 530i and 530i xDrive. That is a meaningful advantage over the E-Class sedan’s 12.7-cubic-foot trunk, as listed by Edmunds. The BMW’s extra cargo volume is one of the easiest advantages to appreciate in daily use, especially for airport luggage, family errands, or road trips.
The long BMW body and wheelbase also support a spacious, long-distance-oriented cabin. Mercedes-Benz takes a different approach to the passenger environment, emphasizing an inviting, comfortable space rather than publishing a cargo-volume advantage. Exact rear-seat comfort and passenger fit should still be checked in person, particularly if tall adults regularly use the back seat; seat design, front-seat position, panoramic-roof equipment, and final trim can affect the experience.

Practicality winner: BMW
The BMW wins the measurable practicality contest. It offers more trunk space and a useful 40:20:40 rear seatback, while its dimensions support the roomy feel expected from a large luxury sedan. The E-Class may be perfectly adequate for normal luggage, but the BMW gives owners more margin before they need to rearrange or leave something behind.
Ride and handling: different interpretations of luxury
BMW’s engineering brief is the sportier of the two. The 5 Series uses increased track widths, a long wheelbase, near-50:50 weight distribution, double-wishbone front suspension, five-link rear suspension, and standard sport steering. Those specifications support describing the BMW as the more driver-oriented sedan, even though specifications alone cannot prove that it handles better in every situation.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class places greater emphasis on composure and refinement. Mercedes highlights AIRMATIC air suspension with continuously adjustable damping and offers rear-axle steering of up to 4.5 degrees. The rear-steering system can make a large sedan feel more manageable at lower speeds while aiding stability at higher speeds, but it is an option rather than a universal feature. Mercedes also emphasizes wind-noise reduction and a polished, quiet cabin.
In practical terms, the BMW is the one to investigate first if you enjoy taking a winding road, prefer more immediate steering responses, or want the car’s chassis to feel like an active part of the experience. The E-Class is the stronger candidate if the daily commute, highway cruising, and passenger comfort are the priorities.

Tire choice, wheel size, suspension equipment, drive mode, and optional chassis systems can materially change either sedan’s behavior.
Interior and technology: driver-focused BMW versus digital-luxury Mercedes
BMW 5 Series: organized around the driver
The 2024 BMW 5 Series uses BMW Operating System 8.5, which BMW says was installed from the factory on 2024 5 Series and i5 vehicles. The system brings QuickSelect and expanded functions for digital content, navigation, charging, streaming, and in-car gaming. The broad curved display creates a modern visual centerpiece without changing the BMW’s more driver-centered layout.
BMW also offers smartphone integration, wireless charging, and a personal eSIM. The interface leans toward configurable widgets and direct-access controls, so it will appeal to drivers who want to organize frequently used functions rather than simply admire a large screen. Higher-level driver assistance is available, but buyers should not assume that every 530i includes BMW’s most advanced highway system.
E-Class: a more theatrical cabin
The E-Class introduced a dashboard-wide technology presentation centered on Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment system. Edmunds describes a 14.4-inch center touchscreen, while the passenger display is available as part of the optional Superscreen concept. The passenger screen is therefore not universal standard equipment on every 2024 E-Class sedan.

Mercedes also highlights Routines, which can connect vehicle functions to conditions such as the time of day, temperature, or destination. The brand lists a Burmester 4D surround sound system and active ambient lighting in its 2024 E-Class presentation. Together with the available passenger display, those features create the more lounge-like and visually dramatic interior.
The technology winner depends on the buyer. BMW’s arrangement is more restrained and driver-oriented, while Mercedes makes the cabin feel like a digital showcase. Both cars can change substantially with options, so compare window stickers and build sheets rather than relying on a review of a highly equipped press vehicle.
Safety and driver assistance
Both sedans have strong independent safety recognition. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety includes both the 2024–2025 BMW 5 Series four-door sedan and the 2024–2025 Mercedes-Benz E-Class four-door sedan on its Top Safety Pick list. That makes a simple safety winner inappropriate: neither car should be portrayed as an unsafe choice based on the available IIHS award information.
IIHS’s evaluation of the redesigned E-Class reports good results in the cited small-overlap, moderate-overlap, and side-test categories, although some individual measurements or subcategories received less-than-good ratings. The cited IIHS rating applies across the 2024–2026 E-Class models in the relevant evaluation.
BMW lists Active Driving Assistant, front-collision mitigation, lane-keeping assistance, active blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic warning with braking intervention, exit warning, speed-limit information, and Parking Assistant among the 5 Series equipment. More advanced hands-free highway functionality is associated with the optional Driving Assistance Professional package.
Mercedes-Benz describes the E-Class as offering its latest generation of driver-assistance systems, but equipment can depend on trim and packages. For either vehicle, verify the exact window sticker before assuming that a feature is standard. A car shown in advertising or a review may have option content that is absent from a lower-priced example.

Protect the cargo and cabin correctly
The BMW’s larger trunk makes cargo protection especially practical for owners who regularly carry groceries, sports equipment, pets, or luggage. BMW sells original all-weather mats described as precisely fitting accessories. If you are shopping for BMW 5 Series all-weather floor mats, confirm the listing specifically covers the 2024 5 Series sedan, the correct trim and drivetrain, and the desired front and rear set before ordering. Do not assume that a mat for an older 5 Series generation or a different body style will fit.
The same rule applies to the Mercedes. Mercedes-Benz’s accessory materials include floor mats and car-protection products. For Mercedes-Benz E-Class floor mats, verify 2024 model-year fitment, sedan body style, and compatibility with both the E 350 4MATIC and E 450 4MATIC. BMW and Mercedes floor mats are not interchangeable, even though the cars occupy the same class.

Use the digital owner resources
BMW provides VIN-specific digital owner manuals and a Driver’s Guide app. These are useful before purchase because equipment and control layouts can vary with options. A buyer can use the vehicle-specific material to check features such as charging for the phone, driver-assistance controls, seat operation, and the infotainment interface.
Mercedes-Benz provides a 2024 E-Class owner’s manual PDF. Used-car buyers should review the manual for the exact model and equipment where possible, especially if the vehicle has the Superscreen, optional rear-axle steering, AIRMATIC suspension, or upgraded driver-assistance systems. A digital manual does not by itself establish that an authorized retailer offers a printed copy.
Which one should you buy?
Buy the BMW 530i if…
- You want the lowest launch price in the comparison.
- Rear-wheel drive is acceptable or preferred.
- You value the BMW’s sportier engineering brief and quicker published four-cylinder acceleration.
- You need the larger 18.4-cubic-foot trunk.
- You prefer a more driver-centered digital interface.
Buy the BMW 530i xDrive if…
- You want all-wheel-drive traction without moving to a six-cylinder model.
- You still want the BMW’s lower launch positioning relative to the E 350 4MATIC.
- You value cargo capacity and the 40:20:40 rear-seat split.
Buy the BMW 540i xDrive if…
- You want the quickest and most overtly performance-oriented gasoline 5 Series in this comparison.
- You prefer a turbocharged inline-six and do not want to move to the electric i5 range.
- You want strong acceleration while retaining the BMW’s driver-oriented character.
Buy the Mercedes-Benz E 350 4MATIC if…
- Standard all-wheel drive is important.
- You value a comfort-focused cabin and a polished highway ride more than outright acceleration.
- You prefer the MBUX, Routines, ambient-lighting, and available passenger-display experience.
- You are comfortable paying more than the comparable BMW 530i xDrive at launch.
Buy the Mercedes-Benz E 450 4MATIC if…
- You want six-cylinder smoothness with the E-Class’s luxury-first character.
- You prefer composed acceleration to a more overtly sporty driving experience.
- You want the E-Class’s available comfort and technology features and are willing to move up the price range.
Final comparison
The 2024 BMW 5 Series wins the broader comparison because it offers more value at launch, a larger trunk, more powertrain choice, and a stronger performance identity. The 530i is the most rational entry point, the 530i xDrive is the natural all-weather alternative, and the 540i xDrive is a particularly attractive six-cylinder performance sedan.
The Mercedes-Benz E-Class is not outmatched; it is aimed at a different definition of luxury. The E 350 4MATIC gives buyers standard all-wheel drive and a refined entry point, while the E 450 adds smooth inline-six power. The E-Class is the better pick when comfort, quietness, cabin atmosphere, and digital presentation carry more weight than cargo room or value.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the BMW 530i or Mercedes-Benz E 350 4MATIC the better comparison?
The BMW 530i xDrive is the closer drivetrain comparison because both it and the E 350 4MATIC use all-wheel drive. The rear-wheel-drive 530i is cheaper, but it does not match the Mercedes configuration on traction.
Is the BMW 5 Series bigger than the Mercedes-Benz E-Class?
The BMW measures 199.2 inches long and has a 117.9-inch wheelbase. More importantly for daily use, BMW lists 18.4 cubic feet of trunk space, compared with 12.7 cubic feet for the 2024 E-Class sedan according to Edmunds.
Is the BMW i5 included in this comparison?
Only as a related alternative. The i5 is an all-electric 5 Series variant, while the direct comparison here covers the gasoline BMW 530i, 530i xDrive, and 540i xDrive against the E 350 4MATIC and E 450 4MATIC.
Does every 2024 E-Class have the Mercedes Superscreen?
No. The 14.4-inch center touchscreen is part of the MBUX presentation, but Edmunds identifies the passenger display as available with the optional Superscreen. Check the exact vehicle’s equipment list.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Pick the 2024 BMW 5 Series for value, trunk space, powertrain choice, and a sportier driving brief. Pick the 2024 Mercedes-Benz E-Class for standard all-wheel drive, comfort, quietness, and a more theatrical luxury-tech environment. The right winner depends less on the badge than on whether you want to drive the sedan or be cosseted by it.
