What changed in the 2023 Prius?
Toyota redesigned the U.S.-market Prius for 2023, offering it in LE, XLE, and Limited grades. The new shape has a low roofline, smooth body panels, and a widened rear; Toyota describes it as coupe-inspired. Available 19-inch wheels, high-tech displays, and ambient interior lighting are also part of Toyota’s description of the design. These are manufacturer characterizations, rather than independent assessments of the car’s styling or cabin.
This article covers the conventional Prius hybrid, not the separately named Prius Prime plug-in hybrid.
How much horsepower does the 2023 Prius have?
Toyota lists combined-system output at 194 net horsepower for FWD and 196 net horsepower for AWD. The redesigned system pairs a larger 2.0-liter engine with Toyota’s hybrid system; Toyota also lists maximum engine torque of 139 lb-ft. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. Toyota’s U.S. announcement of the redesigned Prius describes the powertrain and output.

Toyota’s materials state a 0–60 mph time of 7.0 seconds for the AWD Prius. Treat that as a comparison figure, not a guaranteed result: Toyota’s brochure says performance figures are for comparison only and were obtained with prototype vehicles driven by professional drivers.
What is the 2023 Prius mpg?
Toyota’s brochure lists the following EPA-estimated fuel economy for the U.S. 2023 Prius. These are estimates; an individual car’s mileage can differ with driving conditions and other factors.

The LE FWD has the highest combined rating in Toyota’s lineup. Choosing AWD or an XLE or Limited grade means a lower published combined estimate than the LE FWD.
What does AWD add?
Toyota calls the system electronic on-demand AWD: a motor can drive the rear wheels when additional grip is needed. AWD is an available configuration, not a guarantee of traction, and Toyota’s description does not make the Prius an off-road vehicle. The published output difference is modest—196 net hp for AWD versus 194 net hp for FWD—while the EPA combined estimates are lower for AWD in each grade grouping.

How much did the 2023 Prius cost when new?
Toyota announced a starting U.S. MSRP of $27,450 for the Prius LE, excluding Dealer Processing and Handling. That is the launch-era announced base price, not a current used-car value or a dealer transaction price. Toyota’s announcement also lists a separate starting price for the Prius Prime, but that is a plug-in model and is not the price of the Prius hybrid discussed here. Toyota’s 2023 announcement contains the launch pricing.
The announced base MSRP does not establish prices for higher grades or what a used 2023 Prius costs today. Used-car values depend on factors such as mileage, condition, location, and equipment.
