Mercedes-AMG specifies a 1.6-litre turbo V6, four electric motors and 1,063 hp (782 kW). Its published figures include 0–100 km/h in 2.9 seconds and a capped 352 km/h top speed.
What makes the AMG ONE so difficult to build?
The challenge is the gap between a racing powertrain’s operating environment and the demands of a road car. Mercedes-AMG’s engineering briefing describes a project shaped by durability, emissions compliance, noise limits and everyday street-use requirements. Adam Allsopp, Project ONE Powertrain Director at Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains, put the priority plainly: “Our primary focus was to make this engine more durable than that of a classical racecar.” (Mercedes-AMG technical briefing)
Allsopp also said, “The ICE is more or less exactly the same,” referring to the engine’s Formula 1 lineage. That does not mean the road car is an unchanged race car: the engine was adapted for road use and emissions requirements, and Mercedes says it deliberately runs below the F1 rev limit. In Mercedes-Benz Media’s record report, the V6 is described as revving to 11,000 rpm, with the lower ceiling supporting durability and operation on commercial Super Plus petrol. How much Formula 1 technology is in the powertrain?
Mercedes-AMG describes the ONE as a plug-in hybrid combining a 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine with four electric motors. Their roles span the turbocharger, crankshaft and front axle; the architecture is not simply a combustion engine supplemented by one traction motor. The electric side is also part of the car’s road-going function. Mercedes-Benz Media’s Nürburgring record report lists an 8.4 kWh battery, an 18.1 km electric range and a 3.7 kW onboard AC charger. Those figures are reported in that source’s context; they should not be conflated with the provisional launch-era range and consumption figures Mercedes published in 2022. The headline figures convey the car’s intended performance envelope, but they do not tell a reader how it behaves on public roads or what ownership is like. The available material establishes manufacturer claims and engineering details, not independent road testing, reliability, or ownership-cost findings.
What does the Nürburgring lap record establish?
Mercedes-Benz Media reported a 6:29.090-minute lap of the Nürburgring Nordschleife for the AMG ONE. The Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS F1 Team described it as the first production car to go below 6:30. These are claims from Mercedes sources; the cited Nürburgring report documents an earlier 6:35.183-minute run and explains record-run standards, including TÜV Rheinland inspection and notarial oversight. For the record attempt, Mercedes reports that the car used Race Plus mode, maximum aerodynamic settings, a tightened chassis and a lowered ride height—37 mm at the front and 30 mm at the rear. The driver could operate the drag-reduction system (DRS). The time therefore belongs to a specific track configuration and record run, rather than serving as a general promise of lap times in other conditions. (Mercedes-Benz Media record report)
Are the AMG ONE’s original range and emissions figures current?
No. Mercedes-Benz Media’s launch release, dated May 31, 2022, explicitly marked its consumption, CO₂ and electric-range figures as provisional and said official certification values were not yet available at that time. The AMG ONE’s defining achievement is not just its headline output; it is the effort required to translate an F1-derived hybrid concept into a road-legal machine. Mercedes’ account makes the compromises and constraints central to the story: durability, emissions, noise and usable road operation shape the result. Its claimed acceleration and reported Nordschleife lap underline the performance ambition, but neither substitutes for independent testing or evidence about daily usability.
