The 2023 Mazda CX-9 is a three-row, all-wheel-drive SUV with a turbocharged 2.5-liter engine, a six-speed automatic and a more engaging driving character than many family crossovers. Its trade-off is tighter passenger and cargo space than larger rivals, especially when the third row is in use. Mazda’s announced starting MSRP was $38,750 when the 2023 model launched; that historical price is not a guide to what a used CX-9 costs today. Mazda’s CX-90 took over its three-row SUV role for the 2024 model year, so buyers considering a CX-9 are shopping the used market.
Is the Mazda CX-9 a good SUV?
The CX-9 is a strong fit for shoppers who value driving enjoyment and a refined-feeling cabin in a family SUV. Car and Driver praised its engaging road manners and premium-feeling materials, while identifying passenger and cargo room as its main compromise compared with larger three-row competitors. That trade-off matters most if adults regularly use the third row or the vehicle must carry a full load of people and luggage.
Car and Driver lists seating for six to seven, depending on configuration, and 23 mpg combined for the 2023 model. Its review reports a 7.1-second zero-to-60-mph run for a Grand Touring test vehicle; that is the publication’s test result, not a guarantee for every CX-9. See Car and Driver’s 2023 CX-9 review.
How much did a Mazda CX-9 cost new?
Mazda North American Operations announced a $38,750 starting MSRP for the 2023 CX-9 in its August 30, 2022 pricing release. This is the original US launch price for that model year, not a current asking price, used-car appraisal or estimate of what a particular vehicle is worth. Used prices vary with mileage, trim, condition, location and history; compare current listings for the specific market and vehicle you are considering. What are the 2023 Mazda CX-9 specs?
Mazda’s US specification deck lists the following mechanical configuration across all five 2023 trims: a SKYACTIV-G 2.5-liter Dynamic Pressure Turbo four-cylinder, SKYACTIV-Drive six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift and Sport modes, and i-Activ all-wheel drive. Output depends on the fuel octane Mazda specifies:

Which 2023 CX-9 trim should you look for?
Mazda offered five US trims: Touring, Touring Plus, Carbon Edition, Grand Touring and Signature. The lineup changes seating, comfort and other equipment by trim. The specification deck lists a 10.25-inch center display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, three-zone automatic climate control and heated front seats among the equipment available in the range, but do not assume every feature is fitted to every example. Check the vehicle’s original window sticker, equipment listing or controls in person.
Mazda’s 2023 pricing announcement names standard i-Activsense driver-assistance equipment including Mazda Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Smart Brake Support with collision warning, Advanced Smart City Brake Support with pedestrian detection, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, Lane Departure Warning and Lane Keep Assist. Equipment condition and function can vary on a used vehicle, so verify operation during inspection rather than relying only on a trim badge.

What to check before buying a used CX-9
Assess the particular car rather than treating model-level specifications as a guarantee of condition. Use this checklist during the records review and test drive:
- Review maintenance records, accident and title history, and the vehicle identification number (VIN).
- Check tires and brakes, warning lights, and the operation of every seat and the liftgate.
- Test the infotainment system, climate controls and driver-assistance features.
- Look up open recalls or campaigns by VIN through an authoritative recall lookup; the status of any individual vehicle is not established by general model information.
- Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection before committing to the purchase.
For cabin protection, all-weather floor mats may be useful, but confirm that a listing explicitly fits the 2023 model and the vehicle’s configuration before buying. A product label or generic CX-9 fitment claim is not enough to establish compatibility.

What replaced the Mazda CX-9?
Mazda’s CX-90 replaced the CX-9 in the brand’s three-row SUV range for the 2024 model-year transition. The CX-9 is therefore a used-market choice, while shoppers looking for Mazda’s newer three-row SUV can also consider the CX-90. They are not interchangeable: the newer model has different architecture and powertrains, and a meaningful value comparison depends on current listings and the vehicles’ specific equipment and condition.
