He rode a Monster Energy by FHO Racing BMW M 1000 RR in the second RL360 Superstock race. It was a race lap—not a practice or qualifying run—and it became the outright TT lap record.
The official 2023 TT record
The Isle of Man TT Races report says Hickman won the second RL360 Superstock race by more than 17 seconds over Michael Dunlop and broke his own outright lap record on the final lap. The official TT+ listing identifies the performance as the 136.358-mph Peter Hickman TT lap record.

What was measured
- Rider: Peter Hickman
- Team and motorcycle: Monster Energy by FHO Racing BMW M 1000 RR
- Race: 2023 RL360 Superstock Race 2
- Lap time: 16:36.115
- Average lap speed: 136.358 mph
- Course length: 37.73 miles
- Status: Official outright TT lap record
Average speed is not top speed
The 136.358-mph figure is the rider’s average for a complete lap, including the Mountain Course’s public-road straights, bends, climbs and braking zones. It is not a published peak-speed reading from one section of the course. A motorcycle must sustain an extraordinary overall pace to produce that average, but the cited 2023 material does not establish a single maximum speed.
How 2023 qualifying compared
Qualifying showed that the record pace was part of a broader increase in speed across multiple classes, although qualifying results do not carry the same status as an official race-lap record. The 2023 qualifying report described the quickest laps ever seen during a TT qualifying week on both two and three wheels.

| Class or vehicle | 2023 qualifying result | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Superbike | 133.797 mph | One of the leading Superbike qualifying laps |
| Superbike | 133.775 mph | A second qualifying lap at virtually the same level |
| Sidecar | 119.414 mph | The Birchall outfit’s qualifying average on three wheels |
Those figures should not be treated as interchangeable with Hickman’s record. They were set in qualifying, in different classes and on different machines, so the sensible comparison is the performance within each category rather than a simple ranking of every number.
Which motorcycle did Peter Hickman use?
Hickman’s record-setting machine was the BMW M 1000 RR prepared by Monster Energy by FHO Racing. The relevant race was Superstock, a class distinct from the TT’s Superbike, Supersport and Sidecar categories. Naming the class matters: an outright record can be set by a motorcycle entered in a particular class, while class records remain separate comparisons.

What “fastest TT lap” can mean
TT results use several measurements that are easy to confuse. Before comparing two claims, check all of the following:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Lap speed or lap time: average speed and elapsed time describe the same completed lap in different ways; neither is a peak-speed figure.
- Race or qualifying: a race lap is an officially classified competition result, while a qualifying lap establishes grid performance.
- Class: Superbike, Superstock, Supersport and Sidecar records are not equivalent machine-versus-machine tests.
- Machine and team: motorcycle specification, preparation and rider pairing can differ substantially.
- Official status: an event result or official record database entry carries more authority than an unofficial timing claim.
For a reliable historical comparison, use the same class, lap type, course configuration and timing standard on both sides. Otherwise, a faster qualifying lap may be incorrectly presented as a new outright race record.
How 2023 fits the TT’s earlier history
The 2023 report states that Hickman’s performance surpassed his own previous outright lap record, making the year a direct continuation of an already advancing benchmark. The supplied official material does not provide the earlier record’s exact speed and time, so a precise percentage increase cannot be calculated responsibly here.
A separate milestone: Michael Dunlop’s 27th win
Speed was not the only historical breakthrough. Michael Dunlop won the 2023 Metzeler Supertwin TT Race 1 for his 27th TT victory, moving past the 26-win record held by his uncle Joey Dunlop for 24 years. That achievement concerns race wins, not lap speed, but it illustrates the same event’s competitive progression from a different angle.

What the 2023 numbers actually prove
- The outright benchmark was an official race lap averaging 136.358 mph.
- Hickman achieved it on a BMW M 1000 RR entered by Monster Energy by FHO Racing.
- Qualifying produced leading Superbike averages above 133 mph and a Birchall Sidecar average of 119.414 mph.
- Two-wheel and three-wheel results both reached qualifying-week highs according to the 2023 event report.
- The figures document measured performance, but they do not prove that one particular engineering technology caused the increase. Establishing causation would require a controlled technical study that these race reports do not provide.
