The U.S.-market 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy paired a 277-hp engine with upscale cabin and technology features at a starting MSRP of $42,600 with front-wheel drive or $44,300 with all-wheel drive. That made it the premium end of a Santa Fe range that started at $28,750 for the 191-hp SE FWD—but those are historical new-car prices, not today’s used-market values. The Calligraphy’s appeal is clear on paper; whether a particular used example is worth buying depends on its condition, equipment and price.
What made the Calligraphy the range-topping Santa Fe?
For the 2023 U.S. lineup, Calligraphy was the upscale choice: Cars.com lists it with a 2.5-liter four-cylinder rated at 277 hp and an eight-speed automatic transmission. It seats five. The lower SE FWD was listed at $28,750 starting MSRP with 191 hp, so the Calligraphy’s original premium bought a more powerful engine as well as richer equipment.
That is a useful historical comparison within the same model range, not a current value comparison. The figures come from Cars.com’s trim database, accessed in 2026; they do not establish what a used Calligraphy should cost now.
How do FWD and AWD differ?
Cars.com lists two U.S. Calligraphy configurations. The AWD model cost more at launch and has a slightly lower catalog combined fuel-economy estimate. These are listed estimates, not real-world mileage results.

The choice is straightforward in principle: consider AWD if its traction capability suits your climate and driving, while FWD has the lower listed starting price and better catalog combined estimate. The figures do not show how either version performs in a particular owner’s conditions.
What premium features did it offer?
A sample window sticker for a 2023 Calligraphy AWD documents equipment that helps explain its luxury positioning. That particular vehicle had quilted premium Nappa leather, heated and ventilated front seats, a head-up display, a surround-view camera system, adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, and 20-inch alloy wheels with 255/45R20 tires.

The sticker establishes what was fitted to that specific AWD vehicle; it is not proof that every Calligraphy in every market had identical equipment. Check the window sticker or equipment list for the VIN of any used vehicle you are considering, especially if a feature is central to your decision.
How many seats does the 2023 Santa Fe Calligraphy have?
The U.S. Calligraphy listing specifies five seats. Do not assume that seating or power specifications carry across markets: Hyundai Philippines’ 2023 brochure describes a Calligraphy AWD with seven seats and an engine rated at 281 PS. That is a different market specification, and PS should not be casually substituted for the U.S. listing’s 277 hp.

What does its safety rating tell buyers?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety designates the 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe a Top Safety Pick+. Its overview rates the small-overlap front tests for driver and passenger, the original moderate-overlap front test, roof strength, and head restraints and seats Good. The standard vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime pedestrian front crash-prevention systems are rated Superior. IIHS also lists standard blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning and prevention, and rear automatic braking.
Headlight ratings vary by trim or option; IIHS’s overall summary shows Good/Acceptable rather than a single result applying uniformly to every configuration. The award is for the Santa Fe model, not a dedicated crash test of a 2023 Calligraphy. IIHS says its core crashworthiness ratings apply to 2019–2023 models and draw on tests of earlier examples.

Is a used 2023 Calligraphy worth considering?
Its original specification makes a credible case for attainable luxury: a stronger listed engine than the base SE, premium equipment documented on a sample Calligraphy AWD, and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation for the Santa Fe. But those points alone cannot establish a used car’s value or driving character. The available figures do not provide a comparative road test, real-world fuel economy, cargo comparison, reliability score or current used prices.
Before choosing a specific vehicle, compare its asking price with current local listings and verify its history and configuration. Inspect condition, service records and accident history, check for open recalls, and confirm equipment against the VIN-specific sticker. These checks matter more than relying on the Calligraphy name or its original MSRP.
