2022 Kawasaki Ninja H2R: Performance, Price, and Photos

The 2022 Kawasaki Ninja H2R made 310 PS—or 326 PS with ram air—but was a closed-course-only machine. Here are its U.S. price, specs, speed context, slick tires, maintenance needs, recall, and photos.

The 2022 Kawasaki Ninja H2R was a closed-course-only hypersport motorcycle with a 998cc mechanically supercharged inline-four. Kawasaki rated the U.S.-market bike at 310 PS at 14,000 rpm, or 326 PS with ram air, with 121.5 lb-ft of torque. Its original U.S. MSRP was $56,500 before freight, taxes, dealer fees, and track-support costs.

The crucial qualification is that the H2R was not a street-legal Ninja H2 with extra bodywork. It used racing slicks, carbon-fiber aerodynamic winglets, track-focused equipment, and a closed-course designation. Kawasaki did not publish an official 2022 top-speed figure, so the widely repeated 249-mph claim should not be treated as a normal production specification.

Quick verdict

The 2022 Ninja H2R makes sense as a collector-grade engineering statement, a private-circuit machine, or a high-speed track motorcycle for an exceptionally experienced rider with the equipment and budget to support it. It makes little sense as a general-purpose motorcycle because it cannot be used on public roads, requires suitable track transport and tire support, and carries a high-rpm service schedule that mileage alone does not describe.

In practical terms, the H2R offers extraordinary straight-line performance potential and remarkable technology. It does not automatically make the best lap-time tool on every circuit. A conventional liter-class superbike may be easier to tune, maintain, race, and support.

What exactly is the 2022 Kawasaki Ninja H2R?

The H2R was Kawasaki’s limited-production, supercharged hypersport flagship for the 2022 model year. It was the closed-course counterpart to the street-legal Ninja H2, designed around extreme acceleration and high-speed circuit operation rather than commuting, touring, or ordinary road riding. Kawasaki’s 2022 U.S. announcement described the H2R as a returning supercharged flagship available in limited quantities.

The difference from the Ninja H2 is substantial. The H2R combines a mechanically driven centrifugal supercharger, carbon-fiber aerodynamic devices, a lightweight trellis frame, high-specification Brembo brakes, an Öhlins rear shock, racing slicks, and a suite of inertial-unit-assisted electronics. The result is not simply a more powerful road motorcycle; it is a factory-built machine intended to operate in an environment where the rider, tires, suspension, brakes, and track are all prepared for it.

Engine, power, and torque

The U.S.-specification H2R uses a 998cc liquid-cooled, four-stroke inline-four with dual overhead camshafts and 16 valves. Its 76.0mm bore and 55.0mm stroke produce a relatively short-stroke layout suited to high engine speed, while the mechanically driven centrifugal supercharger forces additional air into the engine without relying on exhaust-gas energy.

Kawasaki developed the supercharger with technology from several Kawasaki Heavy Industries divisions, including aerospace and gas-turbine engineering. Unlike a turbocharger, the H2R’s compressor is mechanically driven by the engine. Kawasaki discusses that development approach in its supercharged-engine technology overview.

Output measurement Kawasaki figure Approximate U.S. horsepower equivalent
Maximum power without ram air 228 kW / 310 PS at 14,000 rpm About 306 hp
Maximum power with ram air 240 kW / 326 PS at 14,000 rpm About 322 hp
Maximum torque 165 N·m / 121.5 lb-ft at 12,500 rpm —

326 PS is the ram-air figure. It is not the ordinary stationary or non-ram-air rating, and PS is not exactly the same unit as U.S. mechanical horsepower. Kawasaki’s official U.S. specification sheet lists the manufacturer figures in PS; the horsepower conversions above are approximate. Calling the H2R a 326-horsepower motorcycle without explaining ram air and the PS conversion loses both qualifications.

Engine hardware

  • 998cc liquid-cooled inline-four
  • DOHC, 16 valves
  • 76.0mm bore and 55.0mm stroke
  • 8.3:1 compression ratio for the U.S. specification
  • Mechanical centrifugal supercharger developed by Kawasaki
  • Four 50mm throttle bodies with dual injection
  • Electric starting
  • Six-speed return-shift dog-ring transmission
  • Wet multi-disc clutch
  • Sealed-chain final drive

Regional specification pages can differ. Some international Kawasaki pages list an 8.5:1 compression ratio, while the U.S. specification sheet and 2022 owner-manual material list 8.3:1. This article uses the U.S. figure rather than combining values from different markets.

How fast is the 2022 H2R?

There is no single official 2022 U.S. top-speed number to put in a specification box. Kawasaki’s 2022 press release and official specification sheet publish power, torque, equipment, and dimensions, but not a guaranteed maximum speed.

Independent tests provide useful context, but they are not interchangeable with a factory top-speed rating:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A half-mile acceleration test and a standing-mile run measure different things. Rider position, launch, gearing, tire condition, wind, temperature, elevation, surface, and the length of the test all affect the result. The fact that an earlier H2R reached those speeds demonstrates its performance potential; it does not guarantee that every stock 2022 bike will reproduce either number.

The frequently repeated 249 mph, or 400 km/h, figure is associated with a high-speed demonstration. It should be attributed to that demonstration rather than presented as the official top speed of every standard 2022 H2R. There is also no reason to invent a 0-to-60-mph, quarter-mile, or 0-to-200-mph number for the 2022 model when the supplied official materials do not provide one.

Chassis, aerodynamics, brakes, and electronics

The H2R’s chassis hardware is built to manage the consequences of its power. A trellis frame is paired with a single-sided swingarm. Up front is a 43mm inverted fork with adjustable damping and preload; at the rear is an Öhlins TTX36 gas-charged shock with adjustable damping and preload.

Braking hardware consists of dual Brembo Stylema opposed four-piston front calipers and 330mm discs. The rear uses an opposed two-piston caliper and a 250mm disc. Kawasaki’s U.S. specification identifies the system as KIBS ABS, Kawasaki’s electronically managed anti-lock braking system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Carbon winglets and high-speed stability

Carbon-fiber aerodynamic devices on the H2R are intended to generate downforce and improve stability as speed rises. They are part of the motorcycle’s design brief, not decorative replacements for ordinary fairing panels. Combined with the track-only tires, they show why the H2R should be evaluated as a complete closed-course package rather than by engine output alone.

Electronic rider aids

The H2R uses electronic throttle valves and an inertial measurement unit. Kawasaki says the IMU monitors six degrees of freedom, while the ECU uses chassis-orientation information and dynamic modeling to help coordinate the motorcycle’s behavior during braking, acceleration, and cornering. The major systems include:

  • Kawasaki Launch Control Mode: Manages engine output during a track launch to reduce wheelspin and excessive front-wheel lift.
  • Kawasaki Quick Shifter: Supports clutchless upshifts and downshifts under appropriate operating conditions.
  • Kawasaki Traction Control: Modulates intervention when the system detects excessive rear-wheel slip.
  • Kawasaki Engine Brake Control: Allows the rider to reduce engine-braking intervention.
  • Kawasaki Cornering Management Function: Uses chassis-position information to coordinate braking, acceleration, and cornering control.
  • KIBS ABS: Provides electronically managed anti-lock braking assistance.

The presence of these systems does not make the H2R beginner-friendly. Electronics can manage some wheel slip, wheel lift, and braking behavior, but they cannot replace rider skill, correct setup, warmed tires, or an appropriate circuit.

Paint and instrumentation

The U.S. 2022 H2R was offered in Mirror Coated Matte Spark Black. Kawasaki describes its highly durable paint as having self-repairing characteristics. That does not mean every scratch disappears: deep gouges, impact damage, abrasion through the finish, and damage from hard objects should not be expected to heal automatically.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Instrumentation combines an analog tachometer with an LCD display. That arrangement reflects the H2R’s focus on engine speed and track operation rather than the broad connectivity and convenience features common on newer road motorcycles.

2022 Kawasaki Ninja H2R U.S. specifications

The following table uses the U.S. model as the baseline. International Kawasaki pages may show different tire descriptions, dimensions, wheelbase, rake and trail, or curb mass. Those values should not be merged into a single global specification table.

Specification 2022 U.S.-market figure
Engine 998cc liquid-cooled supercharged inline-four
Valve train DOHC, 16 valves
Bore × stroke 76.0 × 55.0mm
Compression ratio 8.3:1

Maximum power with ram air 326 PS at 14,000 rpm
Maximum torque 121.5 lb-ft at 12,500 rpm
Transmission Six-speed return-shift dog-ring
Final drive Sealed chain
Front suspension 43mm inverted fork; adjustable damping and preload
Rear suspension Öhlins TTX36 gas-charged shock; adjustable damping and preload
Front brakes Dual Brembo Stylema opposed four-piston calipers, 330mm discs, KIBS ABS

Wheelbase 57.1 inches
Seat height 32.7 inches
Ground clearance 5.1 inches
Fuel capacity 4.5 U.S. gallons
Curb weight 476.3 pounds
Color Mirror Coated Matte Spark Black

For comparison, European-style 2022 material lists a curb mass of 216kg, which is close to but not identical to the U.S. figure. Kawasaki market pages can also display different chassis or tire data. Check the specification sheet for the country in which a particular motorcycle was sold.

The slick-tire issue matters

The H2R’s U.S. tire listing is not simply 120/60 front and 190/65 rear. It identifies racing slicks, including a Bridgestone Racing Battlax V01R rear slick in a medium compound. A slick requires an appropriate racing surface, correct operating temperature, suitable pressures, and a rider or tire technician who understands its behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Slicks are not an ordinary street-tire solution. They should be inspected for age, heat-cycle history, tearing, chunking, cracking, and heat damage rather than judged by tread depth. A used H2R advertised with road tires may be more convenient for transport or display, but the change should be documented and evaluated as part of the motorcycle’s setup and history.

Original price and availability

Kawasaki announced the 2022 H2R at a $56,500 U.S. MSRP, with orders opening October 5, 2021. The listed color was Mirror Coated Matte Spark Black, and Kawasaki said the 2022 H2 models would be available in limited quantities. These details come from the official U.S. release.

That was the original model-year MSRP, not an all-in transaction price and not a current used-market valuation. The buyer would also need to account for taxes, freight, destination and setup charges, documentation fees, dealer markup, transport to a circuit, tires, fuel, maintenance, consumables, and storage. A limited-production motorcycle may command a different asking price years later, but a seller’s current price is not evidence of its 2022 MSRP or guaranteed collectible value.

Ninja H2R versus street-legal Ninja H2

Confusing these two motorcycles is the most common H2R coverage error. The following comparison keeps the models separate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Item Ninja H2R Ninja H2
Intended use Closed course only Public-road motorcycle
2022 U.S. MSRP $56,500 $30,500
2022 H2 Carbon MSRP Not applicable $34,000 for the separate H2 Carbon model
Power description 310 PS, or 326 PS with ram air Lower street-bike output; do not substitute H2R figures
Tires Racing slick specification Road-legal performance tires
Road equipment Not road homologated Street equipment and road use
Aerodynamics Carbon downforce-generating devices Road-oriented bodywork
Ownership profile Track, collector, and private-circuit machine Usable road motorcycle with broader everyday practicality

The H2 and H2 Carbon prices above are the separate 2022 U.S. prices identified in Kawasaki’s release. They should not be used to calculate a current used-market premium for an H2R.

Is the 2022 Ninja H2R street legal?

No. Kawasaki identifies the H2R as a closed-course-only motorcycle. Its technical material states that the H2R cannot be operated on public roads or with general traffic and that license plates cannot be obtained for it. It was not sold as a road-homologated version of the Ninja H2.

Registration, title, insurance, emissions, lighting, noise, and equipment rules vary by jurisdiction, but a buyer should not assume that adding mirrors, turn signals, lights, an exhaust, or a license plate makes the H2R legal. Local approval procedures cannot be generalized, and aftermarket additions do not automatically change the motorcycle’s homologation status. Plan to transport it in a trailer or enclosed vehicle to a suitable circuit.

Maintenance and running costs

The H2R’s maintenance schedule is more demanding than a normal odometer-based sportbike schedule. The 2022 owner manual includes a separate high-rpm service-time system for engine operation above 8,000 rpm:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
High-rpm service marker What it means
SERVICE1 15 hours of engine operation above 8,000 rpm
SERVICE2 30 hours of engine operation above 8,000 rpm
Longer-interval items The manual also identifies additional inspections, including 60-hour items, with later high-rpm maintenance repeating according to the schedule

These high-rpm hours are in addition to conventional distance- and time-based maintenance. A motorcycle with very few miles may still have accumulated significant stress if it spent those miles at high rpm on a circuit. Conversely, an odometer reading alone cannot establish that an H2R was lightly used.

Track operation can consume engine oil, tires, brake pads, brake discs, chain components, clutch components, and other consumables quickly. Slicks need inspection for heat-cycle history and damage. Fork and shock seals should be checked for leakage, and the supercharger, airbox, intake, cooling system, and engine should be serviced by a Kawasaki dealer or specialist familiar with the H2R.

Do not assume a generic motorcycle warranty applies. Kawasaki’s older global technical announcement says the track-only H2R was not eligible for the warranty covering general vehicles, while some secondary specification pages list a generic 12-month warranty. Because those statements do not establish the applicable U.S. purchase terms for every bike, request the original sales documentation and confirm coverage with an authorized Kawasaki dealer.

Recall and used-buying due diligence

A significant issue for a used 2022 H2R is the camshaft-chain-tensioner recall campaign. Kawasaki service bulletin MC 22-08 lists the 2022 H2R model code ZX1000YNFNN among eligible units. The bulletin says deterioration of internal parts could cause the tensioner plunger to lock, potentially resulting in an engine stall. The specified remedy uses repair kit 99999-0851.

The bulletin notes that H2R models were handled through a U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission recall process rather than the standard NHTSA model listing. Before buying:

  1. Obtain the motorcycle’s VIN.
  2. Ask an authorized Kawasaki dealer to verify campaign eligibility and completion.
  3. Request written evidence that the tensioner repair was performed.
  4. Do not rely only on a seller’s claim that all recalls are complete.
  5. If the motorcycle was sold outside the United States, check the applicable national recall database and Kawasaki distributor.

The U.S. bulletin authorized the repair regardless of ownership or warranty status. The relevant documents are the Kawasaki MC 22-08 service bulletin and the NHTSA recall acknowledgment.

Used 2022 H2R inspection checklist

Because the H2R is expensive, track-only, and often modified, the pre-purchase inspection should go well beyond checking cosmetic condition.

  1. Verify the VIN and model code. Confirm that it is a genuine 2022 H2R and not a street H2 converted with H2R bodywork.
  2. Confirm the recall. Have Kawasaki verify the camshaft-chain-tensioner campaign and record the result.
  3. Request complete records. Look for oil changes, valve or engine work, suspension service, tire replacement, and high-rpm service-hour documentation.
  4. Inspect the supercharger system. Examine the intake, rotor area, airbox, ducts, and surrounding hardware for contamination, damage, or signs of neglect.
  5. Check crash-prone areas. Inspect the carbon winglets, frame, single-sided swingarm, forks, wheels, engine covers, and fasteners for impact or repair evidence.
  6. Evaluate the slicks. Record brand, compound, age, heat cycles, cracking, tearing, chunking, and track damage.
  7. Inspect the brakes. Check disc condition and thickness, caliper condition, pads, lines, and master-cylinder feel.
  8. Check suspension operation. Verify that the fork and Öhlins shock adjusters move correctly and that neither unit leaks.
  9. Identify modifications. Ask about ECU tuning, exhaust changes, gearing, launch-control settings, traction-control changes, bodywork, wheels, and winglets.
  10. Request removed original parts. Original equipment can help establish what was changed and may matter to a collector.
  11. Check storage history. Long-term storage can affect fuel, battery, coolant, seals, tires, and electrical connections.
  12. Use a specialist. Have a qualified Kawasaki technician or H2R-experienced specialist perform a pre-purchase inspection.
  13. Plan transportation. Budget for a trailer or enclosed transport; do not ride the H2R home on public roads.

Who should buy a 2022 H2R?

It may make sense for

  • An experienced track rider with access to a fast, appropriate circuit.
  • A collector who specifically wants Kawasaki’s supercharged flagship.
  • A private-circuit or closed-course owner.
  • A rider with transport, tire support, specialist service, and a substantial consumables budget.
  • Someone who values mechanical exclusivity and straight-line performance more than everyday usability.

It probably does not make sense for

  • A street rider who needs registration, lights, mirrors, turn signals, insurance, and road tires.
  • A casual buyer with no access to a suitable circuit.
  • A racer whose priority is parts availability, established race support, and predictable lap-time development.
  • Anyone who is attracted mainly by the 249-mph claim but has not considered tire temperature, track length, braking demands, or rider experience.

If public-road use is important, the street-legal Ninja H2 is the logical Kawasaki alternative. If lap time and race support are the priority, compare exact model-year versions of motorcycles such as the Kawasaki ZX-10R, BMW S 1000 RR or M 1000 RR, Honda CBR1000RR-R, and Ducati Panigale V4. The H2R’s supercharged output does not by itself make it the fastest or easiest motorcycle on every circuit.

2022 Kawasaki Ninja H2R photos

Kawasaki’s official 2022 H2R gallery provides the safest source for model-accurate images. A useful photo set should show the full left and right profiles, the front three-quarter view with carbon winglets, the rear three-quarter view and single-sided swingarm, the supercharger intake, cockpit and LCD display, Brembo Stylema calipers, Öhlins TTX36 shock, rear slick, and Mirror Coated Matte Spark Black finish.

Captions should identify the motorcycle as a 2022 H2R and note that it is a closed-course machine. Do not substitute an image of the street-legal Ninja H2, H2 Carbon, a later H2R model year, or a modified race-prepared motorcycle for a stock 2022 example.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 2022 Kawasaki Ninja H2R street legal?

No. Kawasaki designated it for closed-course use and did not sell it as a road-homologated motorcycle. Do not assume aftermarket road equipment can make it legal.

How fast is the 2022 Ninja H2R?

Kawasaki did not publish an official 2022 U.S. top-speed number. Earlier independent H2R tests reported approximately 204 mph in a half-mile and 216.4 mph in a standing mile, but test conditions differ and neither result is a guaranteed 2022 specification.

Does the H2R use slick tires?

Yes. The U.S. specification lists a 120/60 ZR17 V01F front slick and a 190/65 17 Bridgestone Racing Battlax V01R medium rear slick. They are intended for appropriate closed-course use, not ordinary public roads.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How often does the H2R need service?

The owner manual tracks additional service by high-rpm operating time: SERVICE1 at 15 hours above 8,000 rpm, SERVICE2 at 30 hours, and additional longer-interval inspections including 60-hour items. Normal time- and distance-based maintenance still applies.

What is the main difference between the H2 and H2R?

The H2R is a closed-course machine with higher output, carbon aerodynamic devices, racing slicks, and no road homologation. The H2 is the street-legal road motorcycle with road equipment and a lower price.

Can a used H2R be registered?

Do not assume so. Kawasaki says the H2R cannot be operated on public roads and that license plates cannot be obtained. Local law varies, but adding lights or a plate does not automatically change its homologation status.

What recall affects the 2022 H2R?

Kawasaki bulletin MC 22-08 covers a camshaft-chain-tensioner issue on eligible units, including model code ZX1000YNFNN. Verify completion by VIN with an authorized Kawasaki dealer and request documentation of the repair using kit 99999-0851.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the 2022 Kawasaki Ninja H2R street legal?

No. Kawasaki designated the H2R for closed-course use, and it was not sold as a road-homologated motorcycle. A buyer should not assume that adding road equipment makes it legal.

How much power does the 2022 H2R make?

Kawasaki rated it at 310 PS at 14,000 rpm, or 326 PS at 14,000 rpm with ram air. Those figures are approximately 306 and 322 U.S. mechanical horsepower.

What was the original U.S. price?

The original 2022 U.S. MSRP was $56,500, before taxes, freight, setup, dealer fees, transport, and track-running costs.

How fast is the 2022 Ninja H2R?

Kawasaki did not publish an official 2022 U.S. top-speed number. Earlier independent tests recorded approximately 204 mph in a half-mile and 216.4 mph in a standing mile, but those results are not guaranteed 2022 production-bike figures.

Does the H2R use racing slicks?

Yes. The U.S. specification lists front and rear racing slicks, which require appropriate track conditions, temperature, pressures, and setup.

What maintenance issue should used buyers check first?

Verify the camshaft-chain-tensioner recall by VIN with an authorized Kawasaki dealer. Also request high-rpm service-hour records because the owner manual tracks operation above 8,000 rpm separately from mileage.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The 2022 Kawasaki Ninja H2R was a 310-PS closed-course hypersport motorcycle that could produce 326 PS with ram air, not a 249-mph streetbike. Its $56,500 original MSRP bought an unusually sophisticated track machine with slicks, carbon aerodynamics, a supercharger, and high-end suspension and brakes. For a collector or experienced rider with a suitable circuit and specialist support, it remains a compelling technical object. For road use, everyday riding, or uncomplicated racing, the street-legal Ninja H2 or a conventional superbike is the more rational choice.
