The 2022 Caterham Seven 170 is a lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports car powered by a 660cc turbocharged Suzuki three-cylinder engine and paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. Caterham lists 84 bhp, a 0–60 mph time of 6.9 seconds and a 105 mph top speed; its 440 kg weight and power-to-weight figure depend on specification. The model launched in 2021, so 2022 refers to the model year, not its debut.
2022 Caterham Seven 170 specifications
The figures below are Caterham’s published specifications, not independent test results. The manufacturer qualifies the weight and power-to-weight ratio by specification, so they should not be treated as measured figures for every 2022 car.

When the Seven 170 launched
The Seven 170 was announced in September 2021 as the successor to the Seven 160. Caterham Japan said it went on sale in Japan on 23 September 2021 and described it as meeting Japan’s kei-car specifications. That market-specific classification and the local S and R offering should not be assumed to define equipment or pricing in other countries. What is the difference between the 170 S and 170 R?
Caterham describes the S as road-focused and the R as circuit-focused. The distinction is best understood as a starting point for comparing intended use and equipment, not as proof that every car carrying one badge has identical options. The available UK lists document possible equipment, but a specific car’s build sheet is needed to establish what it actually has.
- 170 S: the road-focused variant. When assessing one, check its weather equipment, seats, cockpit fit and any protection equipment fitted.
- 170 R: the circuit-focused variant. Check the specific car’s seats, steering wheel, protection equipment, lighting and other options rather than assuming they are standard.
The UK 2022 S and R price/specification lists are both dated 2 February 2023. They include options such as seat and steering-wheel choices, heaters, sequential shift lights, lowered floors, map pockets, carbon-fibre nosecones and cycle wings, and high-intensity headlights with LED side lights. Availability varies by pack and option; the lists are historical documents, not current quotations or a definitive record of any individual 2022 car. What to check on a used Seven 170
Because equipment depends on market, pack and individual build, verify the car rather than relying on the model name or a period brochure.

- Ask for the build sheet and confirm which options were factory-fitted and which may have been added later.
- Check seat and cockpit fit in person. Caterham’s January 2022 EU list says lowered floors provide more cockpit room; confirm that any such equipment is present and suitable for the car.
- Inspect the weather equipment, lighting and protection equipment against your intended use and the car’s actual specification.
- Keep market in mind when comparing documentation. The EU list is version 1.2, dated January 2022, and is labeled ex-works, ex-VAT, fully built EU6; its pricing and options should not be transferred to UK cars or current model years. Caterham’s EU Seven 170 list gives that document’s scope.
Resale-value estimate: treat it as a projection
In its 24 June 2022 review, RAC Drive estimated that a Seven 170 might retain more than 65% of its original price after three years. This is the publication’s projection, not a guaranteed or independently verified resale value for every car; the review does not establish the value of a particular used example.
