The 2022 BMW X4 M Competition is a high-output SUV-coupe whose headline appeal is clear: BMW claimed 503 horsepower, 479 lb-ft of torque and a 0–60 mph time of 3.7 seconds. That performance comes with a distinctive sloping-roof body and a 21-inch performance-tire setup. Whether it is worth buying depends on how much you value the Competition tune—and on practical details such as comfort, cargo access and ownership costs that the available specifications alone cannot settle.
What changed for the 2022 BMW X4 M Competition?
BMW announced the refreshed 2022 X4 M and X4 M Competition in June 2021, with the U.S. launch scheduled for September. BMW said the update brought exterior and interior design changes, as well as technology, infotainment and driver-assistance updates. The refresh retained the model’s basic proposition: M performance in the X4’s coupe-style utility body. The sources establish the powertrain and selected equipment, but do not provide enough detail to judge the updated cabin ergonomics or quantify changes in day-to-day usability.
How fast is the 2022 X4 M Competition?
BMW says the Competition’s turbocharged inline-six produces 503 hp at 6,250 rpm and 479 lb-ft of torque, with a 7,200-rpm redline. BMW attributes the claimed 0–60 mph time of 3.7 seconds to the 2022 model’s increased torque; it gives 4.0 seconds for the prior Competition version. These are manufacturer figures, not independently verified test results.

BMW lists a 155-mph electronically limited top speed, rising to 177 mph with the optional M Driver’s Package. BMW says that package also includes a voucher for driver training at a BMW Performance Center driving school. Check the original equipment and package details for an individual car before assuming it has either feature.
BMW describes the S58 engine as having a forged lightweight crankshaft, closed-deck crankcase, wire-arc-sprayed cylinder-wall coating and a 3D-printed cylinder-head core. Those construction details indicate the engineering focus, but do not by themselves establish real-world reliability or running costs.

What performance hardware does it have?
The 2022 U.S. announcement lists M Compound brakes with four-piston fixed front calipers and single-piston floating rear calipers. Disc diameters are 395 mm at the front and 370 mm at the rear. Competition models are listed with 21-inch wheels and mixed, non-run-flat performance tires: 255/40ZR21 at the front and 265/40ZR21 at the rear.
That is a substantial performance-oriented specification. It is also a reason to inspect tire condition and replacement history when evaluating a used example. The source material does not establish tire replacement prices, brake wear rates, or how the setup rides on rough pavement, so those points need vehicle-specific inspection or a drive on the roads you use.

How practical is the X4 M Competition?
BMW’s technical attachment lists the vehicle at 4,758 mm long, 1,927 mm wide and 1,620 mm high, with a 2,864-mm wheelbase and a 65-liter fuel tank. It gives unladen weights of 1,995 kg to DIN and 2,070 kg to EU conventions; these are different measurement conventions, not interchangeable U.S. curb-weight figures. The sources do not state cargo volume, rear-seat measurements, or visibility results. The sloping roof is central to the X4’s shape, but its practical effect should be judged in person: try the rear seats with intended passengers and load the items you routinely carry. The listed dimensions cannot answer whether the cargo opening or seating will work for a particular household.

What technology and driver assistance are available?
BMW’s U.S. launch announcement describes optional parking and driver-assistance equipment, including a Back-Up Assistant that can steer backward along a previously traveled route of up to 50 yards. Parking Assistant Plus features listed include Park View, Surround View, 3D Top View and Remote 3D View. These are described as available equipment, not as standard on every X4 M Competition; verify the original window sticker and market-specific configuration.
What did the 2022 X4 M Competition cost new, and what does it cost used?
BMW’s June 2021 U.S. release lists a starting MSRP of $73,400 for the X4, plus $995 destination. The surfaced price line does not establish a separate Competition-specific sticker price, so it should not be treated as the verified launch MSRP for the Competition. It is historical launch context, not a current used-car valuation.

No current used-market pricing or inventory data is established here. A used example’s asking price will need to be checked against current listings and adjusted for mileage, condition, equipment, service records and location. Do not use the 2021 launch figure as a proxy for today’s market.
What about fuel economy and independent test results?
Car and Driver’s 2022 X4 M page lists 14 mpg city, 19 mpg highway and 16 mpg combined. The page is titled for the X4 M rather than specifically the Competition, so those figures should not be assigned to the Competition without confirming the matching EPA trim record: Car and Driver’s 2022 X4 M page.
Car and Driver also published an instrumented test specifically titled for the 2022 X4 M Competition and characterized it as “Torque-Rich and Stiff.” The available result does not expose its complete measurement table or test conditions, so independent acceleration, braking, handling, noise, ride and cargo figures cannot be responsibly stated here: Car and Driver’s X4 M Competition test.
Is the 2022 BMW X4 M Competition worth buying?
It is worth considering if the defining priorities are a powerful turbocharged six-cylinder, BMW’s claimed 3.7-second 0–60 mph acceleration and the X4’s coupe-like profile. Its brakes, mixed 21-inch performance tires and optional higher-speed package reinforce that performance-first character.

The case is less certain if comfort, rear-seat and cargo practicality, fuel use, or predictable ownership costs matter as much as speed. The specifications and launch claims do not resolve those questions. Before buying, assess the car in person, verify its equipment and service history, confirm fuel-economy data for the exact configuration, and compare current local listings rather than relying on the original launch price.
