What is the 2022 BMW M440i?
The M440i is the six-cylinder performance version of the BMW 4 Series. In the cited U.S. listings, both the coupe and xDrive Gran Coupe use a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six described as a mild hybrid or gas/electric engine, paired with an eight-speed automatic. That makes the engine the central distinction from the four-cylinder 430i: BMW describes the 430i as using a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four and the M440i as using a 3.0-liter M TwinPower Turbo inline-six on its current M440i Gran Coupe page.
U.S. coupe specification
Edmunds lists the 2022 M440i coupe as rear-wheel drive, with 382 hp at 5,800 rpm and 368 lb-ft of torque at 1,800 rpm. U.S. xDrive Gran Coupe specification
Car and Driver’s 2022 M440i xDrive Gran Coupe specification lists all-wheel drive, 382 hp at 5,800 rpm, 369 lb-ft at 1,800 rpm and an eight-speed automatic. The one-pound-foot torque difference from Edmunds’ coupe listing is source- and configuration-specific; do not treat the two listings as one universal figure. German-market Gran Coupe specification
BMW’s May 2022 update describes a German-market, rear-wheel-drive M440i Gran Coupe with 275 kW (374 hp), 48-volt mild-hybrid technology, an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission and an M Sport differential. Its rated output differs from the U.S. listings. BMW reports combined consumption of 8.2–7.6 L/100 km and CO2 emissions of 185–172 g/km, depending on configuration, under WLTP; these are not U.S. EPA ratings. BMW says the figures are for the German market and that production of the updated models began in July 2022. How do the coupe and Gran Coupe differ?
The Gran Coupe is the more practical body style in the cited U.S. specifications. Edmunds lists four seats and 12.0 cubic feet of cargo space for the coupe; Car and Driver lists five seats for the xDrive Gran Coupe, with 16.6 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 45.6 cubic feet when they are folded. The figures come from separate listings, so they are a useful configuration comparison rather than a controlled test.

The cited xDrive Gran Coupe specification also gives a 188.5-inch overall length, 72.9-inch width without mirrors and 112.4-inch wheelbase. Its P245/45HR18 tire listing applies to that configuration only; confirm the tire and wheel package on the specific car rather than assuming all M440i variants share it.
What are the 2022 M440i’s fuel-economy estimates?
The EPA estimates differ between the two cited U.S. configurations. They are estimates for the listed body style and drivetrain, not a single rating for all 2022 M440i models.

BMW says actual results vary with vehicle specification, road and environmental conditions, test procedures and driving style. The page is a current manufacturer overview, not an archived test of a specific 2022 car; use its figures as context, not as a verified model-year-specific test result. What should you check before choosing a used 2022 M440i?
- Body style and drivetrain: Confirm whether the car is a coupe or Gran Coupe and whether it is rear-wheel drive or xDrive. These affect the specification you should compare.
- Market and rating method: Match U.S. EPA figures to U.S. listings. Do not substitute German-market output or WLTP consumption figures.
