The U.S.-market 2021 Honda PCX is a 156.9cc automatic urban scooter sold as a standard PCX and a PCX ABS. It offers low-effort commuting, a 30.1-inch seat, under-seat storage, fuel injection, liquid cooling, and a choice between combined braking and front-wheel ABS. This guide covers the correct U.S. specifications, equipment, historical pricing, maintenance and parts fitment, and the checks that matter when buying one used.
What is the 2021 Honda PCX?
The U.S.-market 2021 Honda PCX is a 156.9cc automatic step-through scooter designed primarily for urban transportation. Honda sold it in two versions: the standard 2021 PCX with combined braking and the 2021 PCX ABS with front-wheel ABS.

This article refers to the U.S. PCX150-family model, not the overseas PCX160 or PCX125. That distinction matters when researching manuals, replacement parts, bodywork, accessories, and used prices. Although the U.S. scooter is commonly called a PCX150, Honda’s detailed U.S. specification lists the engine displacement as 156.9cc.

Engine and automatic transmission
The PCX uses a liquid-cooled, 80-degree single-cylinder engine with a four-valve SOHC head and programmed fuel injection. The 156.9cc displacement gives it more useful urban performance than a 125cc scooter while retaining the uncomplicated operating pattern expected from a twist-and-go machine.
There is no manual clutch or conventional gear shifting. Honda’s V-Matic belt transmission handles drive ratio changes automatically, which makes the PCX approachable for new riders and convenient in stop-and-go traffic. Electric starting is standard.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Honda also describes features intended to support durability and reduced friction, including automatic hydraulic cam-chain adjustment and roller-bearing crankshaft components. These features do not eliminate maintenance: oil, coolant, drive-system components, tires, brakes, and the battery still require inspection and service according to the U.S. owner’s manual.
PCX versus PCX ABS
The key difference between the two 2021 U.S. versions is braking equipment. The standard model uses Honda’s combined braking system, while the PCX ABS adds front-wheel anti-lock braking. Honda listed the standard PCX at 288 pounds and the PCX ABS at 286 pounds, so the ABS version was not heavier in the published brochure.
ABS can help reduce the chance of front-wheel lockup during hard braking, particularly when traction is compromised. It does not shorten every stop, compensate for poor tires, or make unsafe speed and following distances acceptable. On a used scooter, the condition of the tires, brake controls, fluid, lines, and rotors is at least as important as the badge on the fairing.

Features that make the PCX useful for commuting
Under-seat storage
The lockable, weather-resistant under-seat compartment is one of the PCX’s most useful features. Honda describes it as capable of holding a full-face helmet, laptop, or groceries. Treat that as a design claim rather than a guarantee: helmet shell shape, size, laptop dimensions, and other cargo can change what actually fits.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsUSB charging and storage
A built-in USB charging port sits in the fairing storage compartment. The location is convenient for keeping a phone powered, but owners should still protect electronics from moisture and avoid routing cables where they can interfere with steering or controls.
Lighting and instrumentation
LED lighting and an LCD instrument display are part of the 2021 PCX equipment package. The scooter also has both a centerstand and a sidestand, giving riders options for parking and maintenance access.
Optional cargo and wind protection
Honda offered genuine accessories including a taller windscreen and cargo equipment. A taller screen can make commuting more comfortable in colder or wetter conditions, but fitment must be checked by year and model. A fitment-filtered catalog lists a 2021 Honda PCX150 windshield category, including products listed for the 2021–2024 PCX150; verify the exact listing before ordering.
Honda’s accessory documentation also covers a PCX150 rear-trunk base. One earlier PCX150 installation document specifies a maximum top-box load of 3.0 kg, or 6.6 pounds. Because that instruction sheet is for an earlier application, do not treat it as automatic proof that every trunk, base, or rack fits a 2021 scooter. Confirm the 2021 application and observe the accessory’s own load limit.

2021 Honda PCX price
Contemporary U.S. model coverage listed the 2021 PCX at $3,799 and the PCX ABS at $3,999 when new. Those are historical launch-price figures, not a current used-market valuation.

A used 2021 PCX can sell for substantially less than its original list price, but there is no single reliable value. Mileage, service records, tire and battery condition, title status, crash damage, accessories, region, dealer fees, season, and local demand all affect the transaction price. Valuation guides are useful as a starting point, not as a promise of what a buyer or seller will actually pay.
Maintenance and parts: what owners should verify
Use the U.S.-market 2021 PCX owner’s manual for service intervals, fluid specifications, inspection procedures, warning indicators, and safety instructions. Do not substitute a manual for the overseas PCX160 or PCX125. Similar names do not guarantee identical fluids, service procedures, wiring, bodywork, or parts.
For routine work, the relevant categories include engine oil that meets the manual’s viscosity and specification, coolant, brake-service consumables, battery equipment, tires, and drive-system service parts. Do not choose oil by brand alone, and do not assume that a belt, filter, brake pad, battery, or other part fits simply because an online listing says “PCX.” Confirm the U.S. model, exact submodel, part number, and any superseding number first.

Before ordering, compare the model, type, serial information, color, maker, and size where applicable. A model-specific Honda PCX150 OEM parts fiche can help locate the correct assembly, but Honda’s current electronic parts catalog or a dealer should be the final check for safety-critical parts.
Tires and brakes
The original published tire sizes are 110/70-14 front and 130/70-13 rear. When replacing them, match the correct size, load rating, speed rating, construction, and application. Tire age and condition matter as much as tread depth on a used scooter. A retailer may list 2021 Honda PCX150 tires, but the buyer should still verify the complete tire specification and have mounting, balancing, and inflation checked by a qualified motorcycle or scooter shop.
The front brake is a 220mm disc and the rear brake is a 130mm drum. On a test ride, braking should feel predictable and free of unusual vibration, grinding, pulling, or excessive lever travel. The ABS warning indicator, where equipped, should also behave normally. Any brake or ABS fault deserves professional diagnosis rather than continued casual riding.

Used 2021 Honda PCX buying checklist
A clean-looking scooter can hide neglected maintenance or accident damage. Before buying, work through the following checks:
- Verify the VIN and title. Confirm that the VIN on the scooter matches the title and registration, and check for salvage, rebuilt, theft, or lien issues.
- Check recalls by VIN. Use the NHTSA recall lookup for the individual scooter. NHTSA’s lookup identifies unrepaired recalls for that VIN; recalls do not simply expire with age.
- Ask for service evidence. Look for records showing oil and scheduled maintenance, drive-system inspection, coolant service where due, and battery replacement or charging history.
- Inspect the tires. Confirm the 110/70-14 front and 130/70-13 rear sizes, inspect for cracks or flat spots, and check date codes and remaining tread.
- Test the brakes. Check lever feel, rear-brake operation, rotor and drum condition, and ABS warning behavior on the ABS model.
- Check the battery and starting system. The engine should start cleanly without suspicious electrical symptoms. During storage, a correctly matched 12V motorcycle battery maintainer can help reduce discharge, but polarity, battery chemistry, charger compatibility, ventilation, and manufacturer instructions must be confirmed first.
- Inspect the chassis. Look for bent forks, leaking fork seals, steering-head notchiness, uneven handlebar alignment, damaged wheels, and evidence of panel or frame repairs.
- Operate both stands. The centerstand and sidestand should deploy, retract, and hold the scooter securely. Check that any safety interlock behaves normally.
- Check storage and keys. Test the seat latch, under-seat compartment, fairing storage, ignition, steering lock, fuel access, and every supplied key.
- Inspect accessories. Examine any top box, rack, windscreen, phone mount, or electrical accessory for correct fasteners, clearance, wiring protection, and secure locking. Do not assume an accessory from a PCX125, PCX160, or earlier PCX150 fits the 2021 U.S. model.
Honda previously documented a rear-trunk-base issue in which a locking hook could allow a trunk to detach if it did not fully engage. That historical filing concerns PCX125 and PCX150 accessory applications and predates the 2021 model; it should not be described as a blanket recall of every 2021 PCX. It is, however, a good reason to verify accessory fitment, installation, locking engagement, and the scooter’s VIN recall history.

The PCX’s automatic transmission, modest seat height, narrow scooter layout, and 286- or 288-pound curb weight make it well suited to city streets, commuting, errands, and parking-constrained environments. The 2.1-gallon tank and under-seat storage support practical daily use, while liquid cooling and fuel injection are useful for regular operation across changing conditions.
Do not treat the published specifications as a guaranteed top speed or fuel-economy result. Honda’s specification data does not establish either number, and real-world results vary with traffic, hills, wind, temperature, rider and cargo weight, tire pressure, and riding style. On faster roads, evaluate whether the PCX can maintain a safe speed with sufficient reserve for the local traffic—not merely whether it can reach a particular number.
Common mistakes when shopping for a 2021 PCX
- Searching only for “PCX160.” That can return international parts and specifications that do not apply to the U.S. 2021 model.
- Assuming every PCX accessory is interchangeable. Check model year, market, submodel, mounting points, and part number.
- Buying parts by appearance. Similar brake pads, batteries, belts, filters, and body panels can still have different dimensions or connectors.
- Using tread depth as the only tire test. Age, cracking, flat spots, damage, and correct ratings also matter.
- Relying on a generic service schedule. Use the U.S. 2021 owner’s manual, not an overseas PCX manual.
- Calling an accessory issue a vehicle recall. Check the individual VIN and distinguish accessory campaigns from recalls affecting the scooter itself.
Who should buy a 2021 Honda PCX?
The 2021 PCX makes sense for a rider who wants simple automatic transportation, useful built-in storage, low operating complexity, and enough displacement for ordinary urban and suburban travel. The PCX ABS is the more safety-oriented choice if the price and condition are comparable.

It is less suitable for buyers who routinely need sustained high-speed travel, carry large loads, ride with a passenger frequently, or expect motorcycle-level wind protection and acceleration. In those cases, a larger scooter or motorcycle may provide a better margin, depending on local roads and licensing requirements.

Its value as a used scooter depends more on VIN history, maintenance, tires, brakes, battery, and accessory fitment than on the model badge alone. Confirm every part or accessory against the U.S. PCX150 model before buying.
