The 292cc Blue Core single produces 20.6kW, or roughly 28 horsepower, and drives the rear wheel through a continuously variable transmission. That gives the Tricity 300 straightforward, twist-and-go acceleration in town. Independent road tests found it capable of joining faster traffic and overtaking confidently from about 40 to 70mph.

Its extra front-end hardware and 239kg wet weight are the trade-off. The Tricity is around 60kg heavier than a Yamaha XMAX 300, so it does not feel as eager or sporty as the two-wheeled scooter. It is better understood as a stable urban and commuter machine than as a lightweight performance scooter.
Yamaha does not publish an official top-speed figure in the cited model-year specifications. Independent testing has reported approximately 90mph, with comfortable cruising around 70mph on a dual carriageway or motorway. Rider weight, wind, road gradient, tire condition, and luggage will affect the result, so 90mph should be treated as a test observation rather than a factory guarantee.
How the three-wheel system works
The two front wheels are separated by 470mm and lean together as the Tricity corners. This is different from a conventional non-leaning trike, whose front wheels remain upright. Yamaha’s LMW layout is intended to give the front end more grip and confidence over wet, uneven, or slippery surfaces while retaining motorcycle-like cornering behavior.

There are dual telescopic front forks with 100mm of travel and a rear unit-swing system with 84mm of travel. Braking comes from three 267mm discs, ABS, and Yamaha’s Unified Braking System. In markets using the relevant control layout, applying the rear brake also distributes braking force to the front and rear wheels.

Stand Assist is useful, but it is not a self-balancing system
Stand Assist can hold the upper LMW linkage when the scooter is stopped or being maneuvered at very low speed. It is intended to make stops easier, particularly in traffic, but it does not turn the Tricity into a machine that cannot fall over.
The system is not a parking brake and does not fully lock the steering or suspension. Some movement remains, and the system disengages automatically when the throttle is opened. The scooter still weighs approximately 239kg, so riders need to be comfortable managing its mass when pushing it, parking it, or dealing with an uneven surface.
Alongside Stand Assist, standard equipment includes ABS, traction control, a parking brake, Smart Key operation, LED lighting, LCD instruments, and a 12V/DC outlet.

The 43.5-litre under-seat compartment is one of the Tricity’s strongest practical features. Yamaha describes it as large enough for two full-face helmets, or one full-face helmet plus an A4-sized briefcase, although the exact fit depends on helmet shell size and shape. The 13-litre fuel tank and claimed 3.3L/100km WMTC consumption also suit regular commuting.

At 815mm wide, it is not especially narrow for a scooter. Prospective owners should check garage entrances, gates, storage units, and filtering routes rather than assuming that three wheels make it easier to place in every space.
2021 versus 2022: what actually changed?
Mechanically, very little changed between these model years. Yamaha’s European fact sheets list identical output, torque, weight, dimensions, braking hardware, suspension, fuel tank, and fuel-consumption figures.
The documented European change was color availability. The 2022 range added Petrol Blue and Sand Grey while retaining Gunmetal Grey in the cited announcement. Colors were not universal: Yamaha Taiwan, for example, listed Nimbus Grey and Gun Metal Grey. A used-bike advertisement should therefore be checked against its country-specific VIN and model information rather than judged by paint alone.

The Tricity 300 was not sold through Yamaha’s normal U.S. market during the relevant period. Be cautious with current Yamaha product-page photographs. Later model years or market-specific colors may not represent a 2021 or 2022 scooter. For a used purchase, photograph the VIN plate, instrument cluster, front LMW assembly, tires, and under-seat area, then compare the equipment and paint with the fact sheet for the country where the scooter was sold.

Buying checklist for a used Tricity 300
- Confirm the market and model year. Check the VIN and registration documents instead of relying only on the seller’s listing title.
- Test Stand Assist. It should operate as intended, but remember that it is not a substitute for a parking brake or stable parking technique.
- Inspect all three brakes and tires. The front suspension, linkage, three discs, ABS sensors, and three tires add inspection points compared with a normal scooter.
- Check steering and lean movement. Look for stiffness, play, uneven movement, crash damage, or corrosion around the LMW mechanism.
- Verify CVT maintenance. Ask for records covering belt, rollers, clutch, engine oil, coolant, and air-filter servicing.
- Test the electronics. Confirm the Smart Key, traction control, ABS warning system, LCD display, LED lighting, 12V outlet, and parking brake.
- Measure the storage you actually need. Bring your helmet or briefcase; 43.5 litres does not guarantee that every pair of full-face helmets will fit.
- Check licensing and insurance locally. Three-wheel licensing rules vary by country and may depend on age, license category, track width, and vehicle classification.
