The 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i was the right version of BMW’s all-new fourth-generation X5 for most buyers. Its turbocharged inline-six delivered serious performance, while the new G05 chassis brought a quieter ride, a more luxurious cabin, more useful technology and genuine off-road hardware. It was not simply a cosmetic update to the outgoing X5, and the xDrive40i provided most of the range’s appeal without the price and weight penalties of the V8-powered xDrive50i.
There is one important qualification: equipment changes this X5’s character considerably. An example with air suspension, active steering, active roll stabilization and the Off-Road package can feel meaningfully different from a lightly optioned car. That makes the 2019 xDrive40i appealing as a used luxury SUV, but only if you buy the individual vehicle’s condition, equipment and service history rather than the lowest advertised price.

A new generation, not a mild refresh
BMW introduced the fourth-generation X5 for the 2019 model year in the United States. The new vehicle used BMW’s CLAR platform, grew in size and adopted a much more technologically ambitious interior. Its styling was more upright and muscular than the previous X5, with a larger kidney grille, angular wheel arches, wraparound three-dimensional taillamps and a taller-looking stance.

BMW also offered the more powerful xDrive50i at launch, but the xDrive40i was the more balanced proposition. Its six-cylinder engine was fast enough for virtually every normal driving situation, and the money saved over the V8 could instead be directed toward the suspension, towing, technology and comfort equipment that made the new X5 especially compelling.
Powertrain: the six-cylinder is the smart choice
The 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i used a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six producing 335 horsepower and 330 lb-ft of torque. An eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission sent power through BMW’s xDrive all-wheel-drive system. BMW claimed a 0-to-60-mph time of 5.3 seconds, while Edmunds recorded 5.4 seconds in its testing.
That is strong acceleration for a luxury SUV of this size. The engine responds quickly, the automatic transmission is well matched to it, and Sport Plus mode gives the six-cylinder a more satisfying sound and sharper responses. The xDrive40i does not have the effortless thrust of the V8 xDrive50i, but it does not feel like a compromise in ordinary use. It has enough reserve for highway passing, steep grades and a fully occupied cabin without making every drive feel needlessly expensive.
The launch equipment also included a sport automatic transmission with launch control. Launch control is not the reason to buy an X5, but it reinforces the point that BMW intended the xDrive40i to be a performance-oriented SUV rather than merely a comfortable family hauler.
Standard equipment versus expensive options
One of the most important things to understand about this X5 is that the launch test vehicles and the base-price vehicle were not necessarily equivalent. BMW’s announced standard equipment included:
- Dynamic damper control
- Live Cockpit Professional with two 12.3-inch displays
- Adaptive full-LED headlamps
- Active blind-spot detection
- Frontal collision warning with city collision mitigation
- A panoramic glass sunroof
- Trailer-towing pre-wiring
- The eight-speed sport automatic transmission with launch control
Available equipment could add adaptive M suspension, active roll stabilization, active steering, two-axle air suspension, upgraded audio, additional heated and cooled comfort features, larger wheels and the Off-Road package. Wheel sizes ranged from the standard 19-inch design to available 20-, 21- and 22-inch wheels, depending on configuration.
Those options were not merely cosmetic. Active steering made the large X5 easier to maneuver at low speed. Air suspension could change ride height for loading and driving modes. Active roll stabilization helped control body movement in corners. Larger wheels and different tire choices could alter ride comfort, steering feel, braking and road noise. When comparing used examples, the equipment list is nearly as important as the trim badge.
On-road driving: composed, quick and unusually configurable
The G05 X5 felt more stable and more polished than the model it replaced. MotorTrend’s first drive noted the xDrive40i’s strong acceleration, quick steering response and high-speed stability. With active steering, rear wheels turned opposite the fronts at low speeds, reducing the effort and space required to maneuver the X5 in parking lots and tight urban streets.

On a winding road, the X5 remained controlled without losing the responsive character expected from a BMW. It is still a large SUV, so it does not shrink around the driver like a sports sedan, but the body control is impressive and the steering reacts promptly. The xDrive40i’s six-cylinder engine also keeps the front end from feeling as heavily loaded as it can in a V8-powered luxury SUV.
Instrumented results support the subjective impressions, although they apply to one specific test vehicle. Car and Driver recorded 0.89 g on the skidpad and a 170-foot stop from 70 mph for a six-cylinder X5 equipped with Pirelli Scorpion Zero all-season tires. Those numbers should not be treated as universal specifications for every 2019 xDrive40i. Tire type, wheel size, pavement, weather and vehicle equipment all matter.
The suspension is where two apparently contradictory reviews of used X5s can both be accurate. One xDrive40i may ride with the suppleness expected of a luxury vehicle, while another on large wheels and sport-oriented hardware may feel firmer and more immediate. Check the build sheet and drive the actual vehicle before buying.
It can go off-road, within reason
The 2019 X5’s off-road ability was more than a marketing exercise. MotorTrend tested an appropriately equipped vehicle on a steep, rugged course and found the hill-descent control effective. Available camera views helped the driver place the vehicle when the tall hood limited forward visibility.
The Off-Road package added terrain-oriented systems and hardware, and the available air suspension could vary ground clearance. Together, those features gave the X5 more low-speed control and obstacle-management ability than many road-focused luxury SUVs. The vehicle’s all-wheel-drive system and electronic controls could make loose or uneven surfaces less intimidating, too.
That does not turn the X5 into a dedicated rock crawler. Capability depends on the exact package, suspension, tires and driver judgment. A car with low-profile performance tires and large wheels is a different tool from one fitted with more appropriate all-season or off-road-oriented rubber. If you specifically want to travel on rough trails, confirm that the vehicle has the relevant hardware and inspect the underside for damage before purchase.
Cabin: a substantial move toward luxury-car territory
The fourth-generation X5’s interior was one of its largest improvements. Materials, seat comfort and general fit and finish moved the SUV closer to BMW’s luxury sedans. The driving position remained commanding, while the cabin was quiet and well suited to long-distance travel.
BMW’s Live Cockpit Professional used two 12.3-inch screens: one for the driver information display and one for the central infotainment system. The seventh-generation iDrive system accepted input through the touchscreen, the familiar rotary controller, voice commands and gesture control. That gave drivers several ways to operate the car, although not every interface was equally successful.

MotorTrend found the gesture system functional, but also noted that it could react to animated movements from a passenger. The navigation display could look visually busy, particularly in dense urban map views such as Atlanta. Available lane-keeping assistance was described as unusually forceful even after its intervention level was reduced in the menus. These are tester impressions rather than universal faults, but they are worth checking during a test drive.
Comfort-related equipment could include heated and cooled seating functions, a heated steering wheel, heated armrests, heated and cooled cupholders, wireless phone charging, soft-close doors, a panoramic roof and premium audio. Because much of that equipment was optional or package-dependent, do not assume that every xDrive40i has the same luxury features.
There were also practical compromises. Edmunds criticized the limited amount of small-item storage, wide door sills that can complicate entry and exit, and blind spots created by small mirrors and broad roof pillars. The X5’s high beltline and substantial bodywork provide a feeling of security, but parking sensors and cameras are particularly valuable on this vehicle.

Fitment should be checked against the seating configuration, floor-mount points and exact vehicle specification rather than assumed from the model year alone.
Cargo space, seating flexibility and towing
The X5 retained a useful two-piece power tailgate and a 40/20/40 split-folding rear seatback. Edmunds lists 33.9 cubic feet of cargo space with all seats in place. The cargo floor is flat, with tie-down loops and a loading area that works well for groceries, luggage, sports equipment and family gear.
The split tailgate gives the rear opening a lower section that can help when loading smaller items, although it also means the driver should be aware of the extra moving panel in tight spaces. If the vehicle has two-axle air suspension, the system can lower the body for easier loading. Test that function rather than assuming it works correctly.
A BMW X5 G05 cargo liner is a practical addition for owners who regularly carry pets, muddy equipment, groceries or wet outdoor gear. Confirm whether the liner is designed for the vehicle’s exact cargo-floor arrangement and whether a third-row or other luggage-package configuration changes the fit.

Towing capacity requires more caution than a single headline number suggests. Edmunds reports up to 6,603 pounds in standard configuration and up to 7,500 pounds with the optional factory-installed hitch. BMW’s launch material described a factory hitch rated at 7,200 pounds. These figures differ by specification and source methodology, so a buyer should use the individual vehicle’s build sheet, hitch documentation, owner’s manual and local-market rating as the final authority. Do not select a trailer based on the highest number found in a general review.

The same caution applies to roof-mounted equipment. If the X5 has the matching factory roof-rail system, BMW X5 G05 roof rack cross bars can expand its usefulness for bikes, skis, kayaks or a cargo box. Verify the rail style, bar length, roof-load limit, attachment points and sunroof clearance before ordering or loading anything.
Fuel economy and performance context
Edmunds lists the xDrive40i at 22 mpg combined, with example listings showing 20 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. Those figures provide a useful buyer-oriented reference, but real-world fuel consumption varies with speed, weather, wheel and tire selection, traffic, cargo, trailer use and driving style. A used vehicle’s fuel economy display is not a substitute for checking its mechanical condition.
The performance-to-efficiency balance is the xDrive40i’s central strength. The 335-hp inline-six is quick enough to make the X5 feel genuinely athletic, yet it avoids the V8’s additional cost and weight. For most buyers, the six-cylinder is the version that best combines speed, comfort, utility and reasonable ownership logic.

A 2019 X5 should be evaluated as a specific used vehicle, not just as a model-year designation. The following checklist is more valuable than a superficial inspection of paint and upholstery.
- Verify the VIN, build date and specification. Confirm that the vehicle is actually an xDrive40i, then obtain the option list. Pay particular attention to air suspension, active steering, active roll stabilization, the Off-Road package, towing equipment, wheel size and driver-assistance features.
- Request complete service documentation. BMW maintenance materials identify engine-oil service, engine and cabin filters, brake fluid, spark plugs and vehicle checks as maintenance items within the applicable program. Records do not prove that the work was done, but missing documentation should affect the price and the inspection plan.
- Test the air suspension if fitted. Check that the vehicle reaches its different ride heights, sits level after being parked and does not show a suspension warning. Listen for abnormal compressor operation. A qualified technician should investigate any sagging corner, slow height change or warning message.
- Test every electronic system. Confirm that both 12.3-inch displays work correctly, then test the cameras, parking sensors, adaptive lighting, panoramic roof, split tailgate, wireless charging, driver-assistance functions and steering-wheel controls. A long list of expensive features creates a long list of possible faults.
- Inspect the tires carefully. Confirm matching tire brands, sizes, load ratings and speed ratings. Check tread depth, inner-edge wear and uneven wear. Tires strongly influence the X5’s ride, cornering behavior and braking performance, and mismatched tires are especially undesirable on an all-wheel-drive vehicle.
- Check for accident, flood and underbody damage. An Off-Road-equipped X5 may have been used on rougher surfaces than its clean exterior suggests. Look for damage to suspension components, underbody panels, wheels and exhaust parts.
- Run a VIN-specific recall search. Use NHTSA’s VIN or license-plate recall lookup and check BMW’s records before purchase. Multiple BMW X5 campaigns cover related production periods, and recall status cannot be inferred reliably from the model year alone. Verify whether an open remedy remains and whether completed work is documented.
- Pay for a BMW-focused pre-purchase inspection. Have a qualified BMW technician scan the vehicle, inspect the drivetrain and suspension, evaluate fluid leaks and review the service history before money changes hands. This is especially important when the vehicle has air suspension, extensive driver-assistance equipment or an unclear ownership history.
For owners doing routine service themselves, BMW’s maintenance documentation is the starting point. A BMW X5 xDrive40i cabin air filter or BMW B58 oil filter should never be ordered solely from a generic model-year search. Confirm the VIN, engine application, build date and part number, and follow the owner’s manual or technician guidance.
