The 2018 BMW M550i xDrive is the V8-powered M Performance sedan in BMW’s 2018 5 Series lineup. BMW’s U.S. launch announcement lists 456 hp and 480 lb-ft, while a separate BMW Group technical sheet lists 462 hp and 479 lb-ft for its stated market context. If you own one or are shopping for one, use the car’s 17-digit VIN to check its manual, open recalls, parts fitment and any remaining warranty; model year alone cannot establish an individual car’s status.
What is the 2018 BMW M550i xDrive?
BMW of North America described the 2018 M550i xDrive as its first M550i xDrive in a 2017 U.S. launch announcement. It is a 5 Series sedan with a 4.4-liter V8, xDrive all-wheel drive and an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission. The engine is described as using two twin-scroll turbochargers, High Precision Injection, Valvetronic and Double-VANOS.
For the U.S. launch, BMW quoted 456 hp at 5,500 rpm and 480 lb-ft of torque from 1,800 rpm. BMW said the car could accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in under 4.0 seconds and reach an electronically limited 155 mph. These are BMW’s published launch figures, not an independent test result. BMW of North America’s 2017 launch announcement said the car would reach U.S. dealerships in spring 2017.
Published specifications and why the power figures differ
BMW’s figures vary between two publications. The U.S. launch announcement gives 456 hp and 480 lb-ft; BMW Group PressClub Global’s technical sheet, valid from December 2016, gives 340 kW/462 hp and 650 Nm/479 lb-ft. Keep each set attached to its source and market context rather than treating the numbers as a single reconciled specification.

The technical-sheet values are from BMW Group PressClub Global’s specification valid from December 2016. BMW’s technical sheet provides the listed capacities and engine figures.
How to find the owner’s manual
BMW’s digital manual portal requires the vehicle’s 17-digit VIN and notes that online manuals are available only for select model years. BMW also describes accessing the Owner’s Manual PDF through its Driver’s Guide app. Confirm that the manual is available for your specific vehicle rather than assuming every 2018 car has the same online option.

How to check for open recalls
Recall status is vehicle-specific, so a 2018 model designation cannot tell you whether a particular M550i xDrive has an open recall or whether required repairs have been completed. BMW says to enter the VIN at its recall resource or check through the My BMW App. BMW states that recall repairs are performed free at an authorized BMW Center.

Parts, oil filters and fitment
BMW’s genuine-parts store lets customers tailor the selection by entering a VIN or choosing a model year and Series. That is a useful starting point for routine maintenance parts, including an oil filter, but a product title alone does not prove that a part fits your exact car. Confirm the application by VIN before ordering; the available BMW parts guidance does not establish a specific filter part number.
Use BMW’s parts store to check genuine-part compatibility. For any listing, verify the exact vehicle application and, where supplied, the applicable part number.

Warranty coverage: what the booklet can and cannot tell you
BMW of North America’s 2018 3/5/7 Series warranty booklet includes the M550i xDrive and displays powertrain coverage terms of 7 years/70,000 miles for the categories shown. Those terms depend on the covered component and the booklet’s conditions; they do not prove that a specific used car still has coverage. Check the 2018 BMW 3/5/7 Series warranty booklet and ask BMW to verify eligibility for the vehicle’s VIN.
What to verify when buying a used 2018 M550i xDrive
Two cars of the same model year can have different histories, condition and coverage. Assess the individual vehicle rather than relying on its model designation or published specifications.
