The 2017 Yamaha YXZ1000R SS SE is a trail-focused side-by-side built around a distinctive control layout: a sequential paddle-shift gearbox with an automatic clutch. In New Atlas’s March 2017 review, Loz Blain found it approachable on a tight trail loop and especially entertaining on a flat track and motocross course near Canberra, Australia. He also noted that it offers little cargo or work-task practicality. Those impressions describe that test, not a current model or an independent test by CarCody.
What makes the 2017 SS SE different
The SS SE’s defining feature is its five-speed sequential transmission with paddle shifters and an automatic clutch. The driver can select gears without operating a clutch pedal, giving the machine a more active, gear-by-gear feel than a conventional automatic side-by-side. The reviewed vehicle also had reverse and selectable two- or four-wheel drive.
New Atlas reported a 999cc inline-three engine, 27-inch off-road tires, and FOX 2.5 Podium X2 shocks. Suspension travel was listed at 16.2 inches in front and 17 inches at the rear. These are figures for the 2017 review vehicle, not specifications to apply to every YXZ1000R SS or later model year.
How it drove in the review
On the tight trail
After an initially cautious lap, reviewer Loz Blain described the YXZ1000R SS SE as approachable. He reported predictable rear-wheel breakaway, which made the vehicle’s response easier to read as he pushed harder. That is his impression from the off-road facility near Canberra, rather than a guarantee of how it will behave on different terrain, with different tires, or in different conditions.

On the flat track and motocross course
Blain found the vehicle particularly entertaining on the flat track and motocross course. He credited its substantial suspension travel with helping it cope with rough ground. The paddle-shift setup is central to the experience: it lets the driver choose when to shift while removing the need for a clutch pedal.
Utility is not its strength
The review describes a small rear shelf and little emphasis on cargo capacity or work duties. Its appeal is more about active off-road driving than hauling equipment. Buyers who need a side-by-side primarily for carrying loads should assess cargo needs and utility features separately rather than infer them from the YXZ name.

Do not confuse it with the current YXZ1000R SS
Yamaha’s U.S. 2025 YXZ1000R SS specification page lists a 998cc liquid-cooled DOHC inline-three and a six-speed sequential transmission with paddle shift and auto clutch. It also specifies a 9.0-gallon fuel capacity, 1,574-pound wet weight, 29-inch Maxxis Bighorn tires, and the same stated suspension travel figures: 16.2 inches front and 17.0 inches rear. These are 2025 specifications, not updates to the 2017 review vehicle.

The current model page describes AUTO, SPORT AUTO, and SPORT SHIFT modes and lists YXZ1000R SS accessories, including a folding windshield and spare tire mount. Those listings do not establish compatibility with the 2017 SS SE; check exact model-year and trim fitment before buying an accessory.
Safety, age, and off-road use
Yamaha’s owner manual says the YXZ1000R is intended for an operator aged 16 or older with a valid motor vehicle license. It directs the driver and passenger to wear seat belts and recommends approved motorcycle helmets, eye protection, gloves, over-the-ankle boots, long sleeves, and long pants. Yamaha’s U.S. product page states: “Always wear your seat belt, helmet, eye protection and protective clothing.”

The manual warns that abrupt maneuvers can cause loss of control and rollover, and says the vehicle is designed for off-road use. It is hosted by Yamaha Motor Argentina, so consult the manual for the exact vehicle and region and check local requirements.
