The 2017 Lincoln MKZ’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 was rated at 350 horsepower with front-wheel drive. Its frequently repeated 400-hp figure applies to the all-wheel-drive version, not the FWD car. Lincoln’s specifications establish the MKZ’s output, but not that it was the most powerful modern FWD car across all makes.
How much horsepower did the 2017 Lincoln MKZ FWD have?
Lincoln rated the 2017 MKZ’s 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6 at 350 hp at 5,500 rpm in FWD form. The same engine was rated at 400 hp at 5,500 rpm when paired with AWD. The difference matters: citing 400 hp without naming the drivetrain gives the front-drive car the all-wheel-drive model’s rating. Lincoln’s 2017 technical specifications list the outputs by configuration.
2017 MKZ engine and drivetrain figures
| Configuration | Rated output | Rated torque | 2017 EPA estimate (city/highway/combined) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, FWD | 350 hp at 5,500 rpm | 400 lb-ft at 2,750 rpm | 18/27/21 mpg |
| 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, AWD | 400 hp at 5,500 rpm | 400 lb-ft at 2,750 rpm | 17/26/20 mpg |
| 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder | 245 hp at 5,500 rpm | 275 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm | Not stated by configuration in the cited specification sheet |
These are Lincoln/Ford’s 2016 figures for the 2017 model year, including manufacturer EPA estimates—not current real-world fuel-economy guarantees. The spec sheet lists the V6 torque rating as 400 lb-ft for both drivetrains, even though their horsepower ratings differ. It also lists a 245-hp 2.0-liter turbo four-cylinder. Car and Driver’s review page describes a 188-hp hybrid powertrain and a six-speed automatic for the gas engines; those are review descriptions, rather than figures quoted here as Lincoln technical-sheet claims. Car and Driver’s MKZ review page also characterizes the suspension as comfort-oriented.
Why the 400-hp claim causes confusion
Lincoln’s 2017 product card promotes “400 horsepower and 400 lb. ft. of torque” alongside “the exceptional handling of all-wheel drive.” The copy describes the AWD V6 configuration. Read with the technical sheet, it does not support assigning 400 hp to the FWD version. Lincoln’s 2017 MKZ product card gives that AWD context directly. A 2019 Lincoln brochure likewise supports the later AWD 400-hp context, but does not turn that figure into the FWD rating. 2019 Lincoln MKZ brochure.

Was it the most powerful modern FWD car?
The verified rating makes the 2017 MKZ 3.0-liter FWD a 350-hp front-drive sedan. It does not prove a class-wide record. “Most powerful” depends on the comparison universe: which model years and markets count, whether modified cars are excluded, and whether the comparison uses manufacturer-rated or measured output. Without a defined set and a comprehensive comparison, the broader superlative should not be stated as fact.
For an accurate description, call it the 2017 Lincoln MKZ 3.0-liter FWD, rated at 350 hp. Reserve 400 hp for the AWD version. That distinction preserves what the specifications establish without claiming a universal FWD ranking.
