The 2016 Suzuki Boulevard S40—the U.S.-market LS650L6—is a low-seat, lightweight cruiser with a 652 cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine. It combines approachable dimensions with a carburetor, five-speed transmission, belt drive, front disc brake, and rear drum. Here is what matters when identifying, buying, maintaining, and fitting parts to one.
The 2016 Suzuki Boulevard S40—also identified in the United States as the LS650L6—is a lightweight, low-seat cruiser powered by a 652 cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine. It uses a carburetor, five-speed transmission, belt final drive, front disc brake, and rear drum brake. Its combination of a 27.6-inch seat height and 381-pound curb weight makes it physically approachable for many riders, but the large single-cylinder engine still deserves the same respect and training as any full-size motorcycle.

What kind of motorcycle is the S40?
The S40’s defining feature is its unusual engine-and-chassis combination: a comparatively large 652 cc single in a compact cruiser. The low seat and modest curb weight make it easier for many riders to place both feet, move it around a garage, or manage it at low speed than a heavier cruiser. Those dimensions explain why the S40 is often considered beginner-friendly.
That label needs qualification. A low seat does not make every motorcycle suitable for every new rider, and a 652 cc single can deliver strong engine pulses and responsive acceleration. Rider height, inseam, strength, training, traffic environment, and throttle control matter more than displacement alone. A first-time rider should take a recognized motorcycle safety course and practice braking, turning, shifting, and low-speed control before riding in traffic.
The S40 is better understood as a simple, lightweight single-cylinder cruiser than as a touring machine or performance motorcycle. Its five-speed gearbox, small tank, limited ground clearance, modest chassis, and single-cylinder layout favor local riding and straightforward ownership rather than long-distance two-up travel.
Carburetor, air cooling, and belt drive: the ownership trade-off
Unlike many newer motorcycles, the 2016 S40 is not fuel-injected or liquid-cooled. Its Mikuni BS40 carburetor meters fuel, while the air-cooled engine relies on airflow and correct oil and valve-maintenance practices. This arrangement has a useful advantage: there is less electronic and cooling-system hardware to diagnose. It also creates age-related checks that would not be identical on a modern fuel-injected motorcycle.
- Fuel system: Confirm that the engine starts from cold, settles into a stable idle, responds cleanly to throttle, and does not leak fuel. Long storage can make carburetor condition particularly important.
- Valve train: Listen for abnormal noise and confirm that valve adjustment is current according to the factory maintenance information.
- Engine oil: Use the owner’s manual or service information for the correct oil specification, level-checking procedure, and service quantity. Do not choose oil solely by engine size.
- Belt final drive: Inspect the belt for damaged, missing, or heavily worn teeth and check its condition and adjustment using the specified procedure. Do not substitute a generic chain-maintenance routine.
- Age-sensitive parts: Examine hoses, intake components, wiring, seals, tires, battery, and other rubber or electrical parts for deterioration.
These are sensible inspection priorities for an approximately decade-old motorcycle, not a claim that every 2016 S40 has a particular defect or documented failure rate.

Maintenance parts and fitment
Parts support remains relatively strong. Model-specific catalogs identify the LS650L6 and list assemblies for the air cleaner, carburetor, fuel system, electrical system, brakes, suspension, wheels, controls, and seat. Common replacement categories include oil and air filters, front brake pads, batteries, wheel bearings, levers, and windshield hardware. A catalog listing demonstrates that a part is offered for a stated fitment; it is not, by itself, a Suzuki factory endorsement or a guarantee for every market version. [C002][C003]
Routine service parts
For an oil service, a 2016 Suzuki Boulevard S40 oil filter is a practical starting point. Cataloged examples include the K&N KN-137 and HiFloFiltro HF137, but confirm the seller’s current fitment, the motorcycle’s market, and the exact part before purchase. The same caution applies to an air filter: catalogs list the HiFloFiltro HFA3608 and K&N SU-6595 as examples, but part numbers and availability can change. [C003]

Verify the brake-assembly version before ordering, particularly if the motorcycle has had a replacement caliper, wheel, or other brake component installed. The rear brake is a drum, so rear-brake service is not the same as replacing rear disc pads. [C003][C004]
Battery catalogs list several compatible choices, but battery dimensions, terminal arrangement, capacity, and polarity must match the motorcycle. A battery that physically fits the tray but has the wrong terminal layout is not a suitable replacement. For a stored motorcycle, a motorcycle battery tender can help maintain charge when used according to the battery and charger’s instructions; it is not a substitute for diagnosing a weak battery or charging-system fault.
Owner’s manual versus service manual
Suzuki’s OEM parts information identifies the 2016 S40 owner’s manual by part number 99011-24C71-03A. That owner’s manual is the appropriate reference for operating information, controls, maintenance points, specifications, and safety guidance. It should not be confused with a factory service manual, which is a different and more detailed repair publication. A 2016 Suzuki Boulevard S40 owner’s manual can be useful when buying a used motorcycle that lacks its documentation, but confirm that the listing is for the LS650L6 and that it is not incorrectly described as a service manual. What to inspect before buying a used 2016 S40
Every 2016 example is now an older used motorcycle, and storage history may matter as much as mileage. Inspect the motorcycle cold when possible; a seller who warms it before arrival can conceal starting or choke-related behavior.

- Verify identity: Compare the VIN on the motorcycle with the title and registration. The NHTSA identification material associates the U.S. LS650L6 with a 652 cc, one-cylinder motorcycle and a JS1NP41A*G VIN prefix. Do not rely on a seller’s model name alone.
- Check the market version: U.S. 49-state, Canadian, and California versions can differ in fuel-system, evaporative-emissions, wiring, or labeling assemblies. Photograph the VIN plate and emissions labels before ordering parts.
- Cold-start the engine: Look for difficult starting, fuel odor, fuel leaks, an unstable idle, hesitation, or smoke. Some start-up behavior can reflect storage or adjustment, but it should be priced and investigated rather than ignored.
- Listen and look for engine issues: Check for abnormal valve-train noise, oil leaks, damaged cooling fins, and evidence of poor maintenance.
- Test the controls: Confirm smooth clutch operation, clean gear selection through all five gears, predictable throttle response, and proper return of the throttle.
- Inspect the belt: Look for damaged teeth, contamination, unusual wear, and incorrect tension. Have a qualified technician assess anything suspicious.
- Check brakes and tires: Test the front disc and rear drum, inspect pad and shoe condition, and examine tire sidewalls and date codes. Tube-type tires require the correct tube and rim setup.
- Check suspension and steering: Look for fork-seal leakage, pitted fork tubes, steering-head play, wheel-bearing roughness, and damaged or bent suspension components.
- Test the electrical system: Check battery age, charging behavior, headlight, brake light, turn signals, horn, switches, and instrument illumination. Corrosion or non-factory wiring deserves close inspection.
- Look for crash repair: Examine levers, bar ends, foot controls, engine cases, frame areas, fork alignment, fasteners, paint differences, and mismatched parts.
A pre-purchase inspection by a motorcycle technician is particularly worthwhile if the seller cannot demonstrate a cold start, maintenance records are absent, the motorcycle has been stored for a long period, or the VIN and market equipment do not match the advertised parts information.
Storage and recommissioning
Before riding a recently purchased or long-stored S40, inspect the battery, fuel system, tires, brakes, controls, belt, lights, and fluid levels. Do not assume that a motorcycle is road-ready because the engine starts. Old fuel, aged tires, sticking brakes, degraded fork seals, and a weak charging system can all appear after storage.
For outdoor or seasonal storage, a motorcycle cover for Suzuki S40 should be selected by dimensions, ventilation, tie-down points, and weather rating rather than by branding alone. Allow the motorcycle to cool before covering it and follow the manufacturer’s storage instructions. A cover protects against exposure; it does not replace mechanical preparation.

Suzuki’s official store lists a chrome passenger backrest set fitting Boulevard S40 model years 2005 through 2019, which includes the backrest, pad, and installation hardware. A Suzuki Boulevard S40 passenger backrest is therefore a reasonable comfort accessory for two-up use, provided the specific listing is confirmed for the 2016 motorcycle. The rear rack is sold separately, so the backrest should not be described as a complete luggage system. [C010]

Those are market-specific references: availability, part numbers, prices, and equipment requirements can differ in the United States and other markets. A windshield or rack should be checked for mounting compatibility, load limits, and local legal requirements before installation. [C011]
Recall and VIN checks
Do not describe the 2016 S40 as “recall-free” based only on a model search. Recall status is determined by the individual motorcycle’s VIN, and motorcycles can have different histories even when they share a model and year. Before riding a newly acquired S40, check the VIN through Suzuki’s current recall resource and the applicable NHTSA recall lookup. The NHTSA identification information confirms the LS650L6 model identity, but it is not a substitute for a VIN-specific recall search. [C001][C012]
2016 Suzuki Boulevard S40: who should buy one?
The S40 makes the most sense for a rider who wants a low, relatively light cruiser with a simple mechanical layout and does not need extensive touring capacity, modern fuel injection, advanced electronics, or strong two-up performance. It can also suit an experienced owner who values an uncomplicated single-cylinder motorcycle and is comfortable maintaining a carbureted machine.
It is a weaker choice for someone who wants effortless highway touring, substantial passenger room, luggage capacity, abundant wind protection, or the minimal cold-start and storage concerns associated with newer fuel-injected motorcycles. The right purchase is less about the badge or the low seat than about the individual motorcycle’s condition, documentation, VIN, market specification, and maintenance history.
Bottom line
The 2016 Suzuki Boulevard S40 LS650L6 is a compact 652 cc single-cylinder cruiser with a low 27.6-inch seat, 381-pound curb weight, carburetor, five-speed transmission, belt drive, front disc, and rear drum. Its simplicity and approachable dimensions are genuine strengths, but its age means buyers should carefully inspect fuel-system behavior, valve-train condition, battery and charging performance, brakes, tires, seals, wiring, and belt condition. Verify the VIN and market version before buying parts, and complete a VIN-specific recall check before riding.
