It is not the separate seven-speed manual Corvette, and it is not a dual-clutch transmission. In Drive, paddle inputs are temporary; in Manual Mode, the transmission holds the selected gear subject to speed and starting protections.
Which transmission is in the 2015 Stingray automatic?
GM identifies the Corvette application as the Hydra-Matic 8L90, RPO M5U, in its April 10, 2015 TechLink description. The 2015 Stingray was also offered with a separate seven-speed manual, so “2015 Corvette” alone does not identify which transmission a car has.
The 8L90 is a conventional automatic with a torque converter. The paddles provide driver-requested gear selection; they do not turn it into a manual gearbox or dual-clutch transmission. GM’s historical description says the transmission has four planetary gearsets, two brake clutches and three rotating clutches. It also describes an externally mounted transmission control module (TCM), which made calculations and issued commands every 6.25 milliseconds in the system described in that 2015 article.
How the paddle shifters work
The 2015 owner’s manual says Manual Paddle Shift is available in both D (Drive) and M (Manual Mode). Pull the right (+) paddle to request an upshift or the left (−) paddle to request a downshift. The selected gear appears in the instrument cluster, or in the head-up display if equipped. The car’s control system may reject a request that would put engine or vehicle speed outside its permitted range.

In D (Drive): temporary manual requests
While in D, a paddle press enters Temporary Manual Paddle Shift mode. The transmission responds to paddle requests for a time, then resumes automatic shifting after six seconds of steady-speed cruising without a manual shift or aggressive cornering, when the vehicle stops, or if the driver holds the plus paddle for more than one second. This is a temporary override, not a persistent manual setting.
In M (Manual Mode): selected gear, with safeguards
In M, the transmission holds the selected gear until the driver requests another, but it will not carry out an upshift or downshift if vehicle speed is too high or too low for that change. It also will not allow the car to start in fourth gear or higher. The manual notes that the transmission can downshift automatically as the vehicle slows, so M does not disable all protective intervention.

Approximate paddle upshift speeds for one axle ratio
For Stingrays with the 2.41:1 axle ratio (RPO GXB), Chevrolet’s 2015 owner’s manual gives the following approximate paddle upshift thresholds. These values are specific to that axle-ratio qualification, not universal speed limits for every 2015 Stingray; the manual says vehicle inputs can change the allowed speed by a few mph or km/h.

These are operating thresholds for permitted upshift requests, not a promise that the car will shift at precisely those speeds in every driving condition.

Published 8L90 gear ratios
GM Powered Solutions lists these ratios for the 8L90 transmission family on its 8L90 product page. They describe the family-level transmission ratios; they do not independently establish every Corvette axle ratio, calibration or service condition.

Do not confuse the automatic paddles with the manual’s REV MATCH paddles
The seven-speed manual Corvette has paddles marked REV MATCH for its Active Rev Match feature. Those paddles help coordinate engine speed during manual-transmission shifts; they are not the automatic’s upshift and downshift controls. Chevrolet treats the two systems separately in the 2015 Corvette owner’s manual.

What GM said at launch—and what those figures mean
In its August 20, 2014 announcement, GM described the 8L90’s performance and efficiency benefits as launch claims, not independent comparative testing. GM said it was more than eight pounds (about four kilograms) lighter than the preceding six-speed automatic and estimated up to five percent greater efficiency. The same release gave a GM-attributed 29 mpg highway estimate for the 2015 Stingray automatic and a 3.7-second 0–60 mph figure for the automatic Stingray. These figures are specific to the company’s announcement and should not be treated as independently verified results or guarantees for an individual car.
GM’s lead development engineer for the transmission, Kaveh Kamooneh, characterized it as delivering “the comfort and drivability of a true automatic transmission” alongside rapid shifts and manual control. That is the manufacturer’s description, not an independent road-test conclusion.

Service and repair context
GM TechLink’s April 2015 article reported that internal or external repairs were not then allowed and directed technicians to contact GM’s Product Quality Center before repair. That is historical guidance, not confirmation of current policy. For a present-day diagnosis or repair, consult current GM service information and a qualified shop familiar with the vehicle.
