Mercedes-Benz marked the G-Class’s 30th birthday in 2009 with two special editions built for different purposes: the EDITION.PUR, a rugged 461-series G 280 CDI for off-road travel, and the more luxurious 463-series G 500 LIMITED.30. They were not simply two trim packages on the same model.

The base models, series, and prices are reported in the contemporaneous 2009 launch coverage; the distinction between the 461-series G 280 CDI and 463-series G 500 is also described in another contemporary account. Both prices are historical German launch prices, including VAT—not current used-car values. Mercedes-Benz said the editions could be ordered from mid-February 2009. The anniversary context is also noted in the manufacturer’s G-Class history.
What the EDITION.PUR was based on
The EDITION.PUR was a long-wheelbase station wagon based on the 461-series G 280 CDI. Its equipment choices supported practical off-road use: protective grilles, a towing lug, robust cabin surfaces, and details such as protected controls and footwell drains. It also offered four individual seats rather than making luxury trim its defining feature.
The period launch material lists 265/75 R16 all-terrain tires on alloy wheels as optional equipment. That is a documented period option, not a universal fitment guarantee for every EDITION.PUR today. Before buying tires, confirm the individual vehicle’s wheel size, load requirements, and market specification.

What set the LIMITED.30 apart
The LIMITED.30 was a long-wheelbase 463-series G 500. Its special-edition identity centered on a more exclusive finish: platinum-black designo paint outside, and Chablis designo leather with anthracite poplar designo wood trim inside. Special alloy wheels and LIMITED.30 lettering on the front wings completed the treatment.

Mercedes-Benz announced that both editions could be ordered from mid-February 2009. The cited accounts establish their launch equipment and original German prices, but do not establish production totals, current market values, or present-day accessory compatibility. A roof rack, for example, was described as a separate accessory; that alone does not confirm fitment for every surviving vehicle.

Mercedes-Benz’s later history says the 30th-anniversary models introduced equipment features focused mainly on comfort and interior exclusivity. That broad anniversary description does not erase the practical, expedition-oriented brief of the EDITION.PUR: the pair represented different directions within the G-Class range.
