The 2004 Scion xB Release Series 1.0 (RS 1.0) was Scion’s first limited-edition model. Its signature was Hot Lava orange paint paired with orange interior accents, a numbered plaque and a six-disc Pioneer stereo. Toyota announced that approximately 2,100 would be available, but that was a planned figure—not a verified final production count.

What is the 2004 Scion xB Release Series 1.0?

The RS 1.0 was a special-edition version of the first-generation Scion xB, announced by Toyota Motor Sales on February 5, 2004. Toyota’s corporate fact sheet records the xB RS 1.0 reveal in March 2004 and calls it “the first of Scion’s extensive Release Series models.” Toyota’s announcement and fact sheet establish its place in Scion’s history; neither should be read as evidence of a particular example’s present condition or originality.

What made the RS 1.0 distinctive?

Toyota’s launch announcement described a coordinated appearance and equipment package:

  • Hot Lava orange exterior paint and a color-keyed rear spoiler.
  • An orange powder-coated strut tie-bar brace and billet grille.
  • Orange lighting under the dash, under the seats and in the cupholders.
  • Black seat fabric with orange highlights.
  • A Pioneer AM/FM six-disc CD changer.
  • A small numbered plaque inside the vehicle.

Together, these details are the best way to distinguish the announced RS 1.0 package from a standard 2004 xB. On a used car, however, paint, upholstery, audio equipment and trim may have been changed, removed or replaced. A numbered plaque and matching components can support an originality assessment, but their presence alone does not establish a car’s history.

How many 2004 Scion xB RS 1.0 models were made?

Toyota announced that approximately 2,100 units would be available. That is the manufacturer’s planned availability figure, not a verified final production total. The announcement also put the RS 1.0 at $980 above the base xB’s launch-era MSRP. Neither figure establishes a current market value or collector premium.

Engine, performance and fuel economy

Toyota described the 2004 xB’s engine as a 1.5-liter four-cylinder with VVT-i, rated at 108 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 105 lb-ft of torque at 4,200 rpm. Those are period manufacturer figures, not a measure of what an aged or modified example produces today.

The period announcement gave EPA estimates of 31 mpg city and 35 mpg highway for the five-speed manual xB. Those estimates apply to the manual transmission, not the automatic, and should not be treated as a promise of real-world fuel economy.

Period prices and standard equipment

Toyota’s 2004 announcement listed a base xB MSRP of $13,680 and an automatic xB MSRP of $14,480. It separately described the RS 1.0 as $980 above the base xB MSRP. These are launch-era prices; they do not indicate what an RS 1.0 should cost today.

The announcement listed the following as standard xA/xB equipment, distinct from the RS-specific package:

  • Air conditioning; power windows with one-touch driver auto-down; power door locks; and power outside mirrors.
  • A six-speaker Pioneer AM/FM/CD system described as satellite-ready and MP3-compatible, plus a choice of three wheel-cover designs.
  • Anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution, driver and front-passenger airbags, head restraints, a first-aid kit and three-point seat belts for all five seating positions.
  • Vehicle Stability Control, Traction Control and Brake Assist.

These are historical equipment claims. They do not confirm that the systems work, remain installed or are in safe operating condition on a particular used car.

How to assess a used RS 1.0

When comparing an RS 1.0 with a standard 2004 xB—or with another claimed RS 1.0—separate the original package from the car’s current condition. Check for the documented package details, the numbered plaque and the correct transmission, then assess mechanical condition and safety equipment independently. If originality or value matters, ask for records and compare the specific car with current, comparable sales; Toyota’s launch announcement does not establish either.

For recalls, use the NHTSA recall lookup. NHTSA recommends entering the vehicle identification number (VIN) to check for unrepaired recalls on that specific vehicle. A model-year or make-and-model search cannot determine the open-recall history of an individual car.
