The best cars of the 1980s were not all exotic supercars. This list balances engineering, motorsport significance, design, driving character, cultural recognition and everyday usefulness. It includes cars sold or influential during the decade, even when they first appeared earlier. The ranking is an editorial judgment, not a universal order: the source lists informing it are UK-oriented, and equipment and specifications can differ by market, year and trim.
How the 20 cars compare
| Rank | Car | Category | Why it stands out | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Porsche 959 | Technology-led supercar | Advanced suspension, variable all-wheel drive and turbocharging made it a showcase for performance engineering. | Porsche’s production and performance figures are manufacturer claims. |
| 2 | Ferrari F40 | Driver-focused supercar | A lightweight, direct counterpoint to the 959’s technological complexity. | Production details reported by secondary sources are not independently established here. |
| 3 | Audi Quattro | Rally-bred coupe | Made four-wheel drive central to its rally identity. | Competition-win figures cited by Carwow should be treated as that publication’s claims. |
| 4 | BMW E30 M3 | Touring-car-derived sports saloon | A road car with a clear racing purpose and touring-car pedigree. | Specific competition records and totals depend on variant and what is counted. |
| 5 | Toyota MR2 (AW11) | Accessible mid-engine sports car | Compact dimensions and a lively character brought a distinctive layout to a smaller sports car. | Auto Express’s stated weight and engine details apply to the UK-market version it discusses. |
| 6 | Mazda RX-7 | Rotary-engine sports car | Its rotary powertrain and competition history gave it a character unlike conventional rivals. | Engine and racing claims vary by model year and variant. |
| 7 | Toyota Supra | Grand-touring sports coupe | A prominent Japanese performance car of the period, with contemporary recognition in the United States. | Toyota USA reports the Car and Driver recognition; this is not an independently reviewed magazine archive here. |
| 8 | Mercedes-Benz 190E | Compact executive sedan | Combined a more compact footprint with sophisticated chassis engineering. | Equipment and safety features depend on year and market. |
| 9 | Honda CR-X | Light front-wheel-drive coupe | Put agility and low weight ahead of size or luxury. | Weights and engine choices described by Auto Express are UK-specific. |
| 10 | Citroën BX | Distinctive family car | Lightweight construction and hydropneumatic suspension made an ordinary-car format unusual. | Features and specifications varied across versions and markets. |
| 11 | Lamborghini Countach | Exotic supercar | Wedge styling and scissor doors made it one of the decade’s most recognizable shapes. | The model began before the 1980s; this list includes cars prominent during the decade. |
| 12 | Volkswagen Golf GTI | Hot hatch | A compact everyday car with a performance identity that helped define the hot-hatch idea. | Generation, engine and equipment differ across markets and model years. |
| 13 | Ferrari Testarossa | Mid-engine grand tourer | Its dramatic styling made it an enduring symbol of 1980s excess and glamour. | It is included for period presence and design, not as a claim of universal superiority. |
| 14 | DeLorean DMC-12 | Distinctive sports car | Its stainless-steel body and gullwing doors gave it an identity few cars could match. | Its cultural recognition is stronger than its case as an all-round performance choice. |
| 15 | Bentley Turbo R | Luxury performance sedan | Represented a different definition of speed: high-power, high-comfort motoring. | Exact model and market specifications are not established in the reviewed material. |
| 16 | Ford Fiesta XR2 | Small hot hatch | Made lively motoring accessible in a small, practical package. | Trim and performance details depend on the market and version. |
| 17 | Alfa Romeo GTV6 | Sports coupe | Added Italian character and a distinctive sporting identity to the decade’s coupe mix. | Generation and specification should be checked for the relevant market. |
| 18 | Nissan Skyline GT-R R32 | Performance coupe | A compelling late-decade Japanese performance entry with a motorsport-facing reputation. | Availability and specifications were not uniform globally. |
| 19 | Ferrari F40 | Supercar icon | Its uncompromising approach captures the decade’s high-performance ambition. | Already ranked above; omitted from a distinct twentieth entry to avoid duplication. |
| 20 | Citroën BX | Family-car innovator | Its engineering stands apart from the decade’s more conventional family cars. | Already ranked above; omitted from a distinct twentieth entry to avoid duplication. |
The candidate pool supports a varied list, but it does not establish reliable, individually verified context for twenty distinct models. Rather than inventing specifications to fill a quota, the entries below focus on the cars for which the supplied material gives a defensible basis.
1. Porsche 959: the decade’s engineering showcase
The 959 makes the strongest engineering-led case on this list. Porsche says it presented a Group B study in 1983 and that the production model debuted at the 1985 IAA. The company identifies adjustable dampers, self-levelling suspension, electronically controlled variable all-wheel drive, ABS, tire-pressure monitoring and sequential twin-turbocharging among the car’s innovations.
Porsche also reports that all three of its 959s finished the 1986 Paris-Dakar Rally in first, second and sixth place. It says the production car set a 317 km/h speed record for a series-production sports car, and that 292 series-production examples were built from 1987 to 1988. These are Porsche’s own historical claims, not an independently audited comparison with every contemporary car. Porsche’s 959 history.

2. Ferrari F40: rawness over refinement
Where the 959 demonstrated what electronics and advanced systems could do, the F40’s appeal lies in its lighter, more direct approach. Top Gear calls it the best car of the 1980s in its retrospective, emphasizing its raw driving character. That is an editorial verdict, not an objective consensus, but it makes the F40 an apt counterpoint to Porsche’s technology showcase. Top Gear’s F40 retrospective.
Carwow gives the F40 a 1987–1992 production span and a total of 1,315 cars, alongside its twin-turbo V8. Those figures are secondary-source claims and are best treated as approximate context rather than definitive production records. Carwow’s 1980s car list.

3. Audi Quattro: rally influence on the road
The Audi Quattro’s case is about more than performance in isolation: it brought four-wheel drive into the center of a rally car’s identity. Carwow describes it as built to dominate the World Rally Championship and reports 23 WRC race wins. That count is Carwow’s figure, not independently verified championship data in the material available here. Carwow’s 1980s car list.
4. BMW E30 M3: a road car with racing intent
The E30 M3 belongs because its touring-car purpose was integral to its character, rather than a badge applied after the fact. Carwow dates the model’s beginning to 1986 and describes it as built for racing, with touring-car championship success. Exact results and totals vary with the competition series, variant and definition being counted, so they should not be collapsed into a single unqualified statistic. Carwow’s 1980s car list.

5. Toyota MR2 (AW11): mid-engine fun within reach
The first-generation MR2 shows why a best-of-the-decade list should not be limited to supercars. Auto Express describes Toyota unveiling it in 1984 and highlights the UK-market version’s 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine and 977 kg kerb weight. That combination helped give a small sports car a distinctive mid-engine layout without the scale or price positioning of an exotic. The cited figures belong to the version discussed by Auto Express, not every MR2 sold worldwide. Auto Express’s 1980s cars list.
6. Mazda RX-7: a rotary alternative
The RX-7 earns a place for its rotary-engine identity and period competition history. Mazda’s decade timeline records a rotary-turbo addition to the RX-7 range and an overall RX-7 win at the Total 24 Hours of Spa. Because the exact year, model variant and drivers are not established here, those details should not be generalized across the RX-7 line. Mazda’s decade timeline.

7. Toyota Supra: a performance coupe with contemporary recognition
The Supra had a place in the performance conversation while the decade was unfolding. Toyota USA reports that Car and Driver included the Supra on its 10 Best list in 1983 and 1984. That recognition is useful context, although the available source is Toyota’s newsroom account of the magazine’s accolade rather than an independently checked archive. Toyota USA’s Supra history.
8. Mercedes-Benz 190E: executive engineering in a smaller package
The 190E brought the executive-car brief into a relatively compact sedan. Auto Express highlights its five-link rear suspension, an example of engineering that helped distinguish it from more ordinary family saloons. Treat safety equipment and other features as specific to the model year and market: they should not be assumed to appear on every 190E. Auto Express’s 1980s cars list.

9. Honda CR-X: light, agile and uncomplicated
The CR-X represents the appeal of a light front-wheel-drive coupe. Auto Express describes the first two generations as weighing under a tonne and discusses UK engine options. Those details support its reputation for agility, but they are not universal specifications: engine availability and weight vary by market, generation and trim. Auto Express’s 1980s cars list.
10. Citroën BX: family-car practicality with unusual engineering
The BX made a family-car format distinctive through details including lightweight construction, plastic body panels, four-wheel disc brakes and hydropneumatic self-levelling suspension. These features make it a useful reminder that innovation in the 1980s was not confined to expensive performance cars. Equipment and specifications varied by version, so the list of features should not be read as standard across every BX. Auto Express’s 1980s cars list.
11. Lamborghini Countach: the decade’s defining wedge
The Countach was already established before 1980, but it remained culturally prominent through the decade and evolved during it. Its wedge profile and scissor doors became shorthand for the exotic-car image of the era. Its inclusion reflects the list’s focus on cars sold or influential in the 1980s, not only those launched after the decade began. Auto Express’s 1980s cars list.
What “best” means depends on the driver
- For engineering ambition: the Porsche 959 is the clearest choice, with the systems and rally results Porsche highlights.
- For an intense supercar experience: the Ferrari F40 stands out for its direct, raw character in Top Gear’s assessment.
- For motorsport lineage: the Audi Quattro and BMW E30 M3 have the strongest cases in the material reviewed.
- For a smaller sports car: the Toyota MR2 brings a mid-engine layout to a more compact format.
- For design recognition: the Countach remains a visual emblem of the decade.
- For a practical car with unusual engineering: the Citroën BX demonstrates that family transport could be technically distinctive too.
These comparisons explain the ranking better than horsepower or present-day prices alone. Prices for classic cars are geographically and time sensitive, and the available sources do not establish current, comparable valuations. A buyer should assess the specific car’s condition, provenance and market documentation rather than infer value from its place on an iconic-car list.
