Honda describes the generation with a 2.2-liter H22A4 VTEC engine rated at 200 hp and 156 lb-ft, but an individual U.S. vehicle’s VIN record and a Japanese-market grade can show different specifications. Its value likewise depends heavily on condition and trim, while the available price snapshots are not enough to establish a dependable sale-price range.
How much horsepower does a 1998 Honda Prelude have?
Honda News describes the fifth-generation Prelude, sold from 1997 through 2001, as powered by an updated 2.2-liter H22A4 DOHC VTEC engine rated at 200 hp and 156 lb-ft of torque. That is Honda’s generation-level specification, not a guarantee that every 1998 Prelude in every market has identical equipment. Honda’s VTEC overview supplies the generation context.
A NHTSA decoder response for one example VIN identifies a 1998 Prelude with an H22A4, approximately 2.163-liter displacement, and 195 hp listed. The decoder result is tied to that supplied VIN; it does not replace Honda’s broader generation-level description or establish the specification of every car. Check the actual vehicle’s VIN, market documentation, and engine identity before comparing figures. NHTSA VIN Decoder example.
Japan-market SiR.S is a different specification
In a September 24, 1998 announcement, Honda Motor Co., Ltd. described the Japanese Prelude SiR.S with a five-speed manual, limited-slip differential, and a Type-S 2.2-liter DOHC VTEC engine rated at 220 PS. This is a Japan-market grade, not standard U.S. equipment, and PS should not be silently relabeled as U.S. horsepower. Confirm the market and trim before attributing that output, transmission, or differential to a particular car. Honda’s 1998 Japan-market announcement.

What is a 1998 Prelude worth?
No dependable trim- and condition-specific transaction range is established by the available figures. Kelley Blue Book displayed a $2,786 resale value and $1,862 trade-in value when accessed in 2026; its page notes that local weather, market factors, and driver performance affect actual values. Treat those numbers as a dynamic valuation snapshot, and verify the live page’s trim and condition assumptions rather than treating them as a guaranteed offer. Kelley Blue Book 1998 Prelude valuation.
Edmunds displayed three asking listings when accessed in 2026: $7,500, $9,950, and $14,898. These are asking prices from a very small sample, not completed sales, and their comparability is unclear. They cannot be directly reconciled with KBB’s valuation figures or used alone to establish what a particular car will sell for. Edmunds 1998 Prelude page.

For a useful comparison, match vehicles on the factors that change both condition and desirability:
- Confirmed market and trim, including whether a Type SH or another configuration is documented.
- Manual or automatic transmission and evidence of drivetrain condition.
- Mileage, maintenance records, title history, and prior crash repairs.
- Rust and body condition, alongside the quality and documentation of any modifications.
- Local asking prices compared with regionally relevant completed sales, where available.
What should you check before buying or tuning one?
Start with the car’s identity and health, not a parts list. Establish its market, trim, engine, transmission, existing modifications, and maintenance history. A badge or seller description alone may not establish the exact hardware, particularly when comparing cars from different markets.

Use compression figures as a diagnostic reference
A service-information page for the 1998 H22A4 Type-SH lists compression at 1,270 kPa nominal at 250 rpm and wide-open throttle, 930 kPa minimum, with a maximum variation of 200 kPa. These are specification figures for the documented application and test conditions; they do not indicate that any individual engine passes. Follow the correct service procedure and confirm the figures against the factory manual for the exact vehicle before using them for repair decisions. 1998 Prelude service information mirror.
An engine compression tester can support this check, but the gauge must have suitable range and adapters, and the operator needs to follow the prescribed procedure. A reading taken under different conditions is not directly comparable to the stated specification.

What tuning potential is supported by the evidence?
The documented starting point is Honda’s high-revving 2.2-liter DOHC VTEC H22A4 context for the U.S. fifth-generation Prelude, with market-specific versions and equipment to verify. The available specifications do not establish bolt-on horsepower gains, safe boost limits, tuning costs, or a universally appropriate modification order. Nor do they show that a generic intake, exhaust, ECU, suspension, brake, or drivetrain part fits every 1998 Prelude.
Before choosing parts, confirm application against manufacturer fitment information for the car’s engine, transmission, market, and trim. Assess engine health and maintenance first; then make modifications around a defined use and budget, checking that supporting systems remain appropriate. No specific power outcome can be promised from the figures cited here.
