Honda’s published specifications for the 1996 ED type describe a 1,137 cm³, carbureted inline-four with a six-speed gearbox; its tire sizes are 120/70 ZR17 front and 180/55 ZR17 rear. Those figures apply to the ED type, so check the market and exact version of an individual motorcycle before using them to identify parts.
What the 1996 CBR1100XX is
Honda developed the Super Blackbird as a new flagship after reconsidering an update to the CBR1000F. Its stated goals combined strong power across engine speeds with sharp handling, stability, aerodynamic performance and comfort for enjoying the motorcycle over distance. Honda called it a supersport model developed to achieve “the world’s highest levels of performance”; that is the manufacturer’s description, not an independently verified ranking. Honda’s model history and 1996 announcement describe the development and launch.
1996 ED-type specifications
The following figures are from Honda’s official specification for the 1996 ED type. They should not be treated as a universal specification for every market or every motorcycle registered as a 1996 model. Honda’s ED-type specification identifies the engine output as DIN.

Which tires fit the 1996 CBR1100XX?
For Honda’s 1996 ED type, the listed sizes are 120/70 ZR17 radial at the front and 180/55 ZR17 radial at the rear. These dimensions are a useful starting point when looking for replacement tires, but size alone does not confirm that a particular tire is right for a specific motorcycle.
#1 Best Overall
- The Tusk Dsport Adventure tire is D.O.T. compliant for On/Off Road Use
- Aggressive tread pattern offers grip in the toughest off-road conditions
- Rubber compound is designed to not only offer great grip, but to provide long wear on and off the road as well
- Tall knobbies not only offer performance and wear, but give the tire a tough, aggressive look
- Confirm the motorcycle’s market and exact model version; Honda’s figures cited here are for the ED type.
- Check the load and speed ratings required for the motorcycle, and the tire manufacturer’s current fitment guidance.
- Do not assume a registration year establishes identical parts across markets or model variants.
When was the Super Blackbird introduced?
Honda’s history distinguishes the European introduction from later market launches. Mass production began at Hamamatsu in June 1996. Honda held the world-premiere press conference in Germany on July 4, 1996, followed by a press test ride at Circuit Paul Ricard in France later that month. The model was launched mainly in Europe as a 1997 model; Honda says North American sales began with the 1997 model, while sales in Japan began in March 2001. These dates explain why a motorcycle described as a 1996 Blackbird may not have the same model-year or market specification as another.
Honda also reported an initial sales plan of 7,500 units per year for the 1997 model and approximately 18,000 units sold in its first year of production. These are Honda’s historical figures, not a measure of current production or availability. Honda’s history account gives the figures and market timeline.

How Honda described the braking system
Honda’s 1996 technical material describes a delay valve that changes how hydraulic pressure is applied at the front brakes. With light pedal input, the system sends pressure only to the center piston of the left front caliper, reducing initial front-brake force; as pedal force increases, pressure also reaches the right front caliper. This is Honda’s description of the system’s behavior, not a current service procedure. Honda’s technical material explains the arrangement.
Finding a manual or parts information
Honda’s publication portal offers selected motorcycle service publications and asks users to identify the model name when looking for a manual. The portal does not establish that a 1996 CBR1100XX publication is currently available in every region, so check the portal and your local Honda source for the exact model. What the specifications do—and do not—establish
Honda’s materials are useful for its stated specifications, design aims and historical account. They do not establish independently measured performance, a complete parts interchange chart across markets, current used-market values, or present availability of every replacement part or service publication. For a comparison with another motorcycle, verify comparable market-year specifications and assess engine performance, aerodynamics, high-speed stability and touring comfort rather than relying on an unsupported overall ranking.
