1992 Ducati 888 SBK Corsa: World Superbike History and Specs

Ducati’s 1992 888 SBK Corsa carried the 851/888 Superbike lineage into another championship year, but surviving cited specifications for the 1991 F91 do not verify the 1992 race bike’s figures.

The 1992 Ducati 888 SBK Corsa belongs to the factory and customer-racing story of Ducati’s 851/888 World Superbike family. Ducati says the model took the 888 name in 1992 as its displacement reached 888 cc, and credits Doug Polen with the era’s 1991 and 1992 riders’ titles. Exact specifications for the 1992 SBK Corsa are not established by the available sources; figures published for Ducati’s 1991 888 F91 should not be treated as specifications for the 1992 race bike.

What the 1992 Ducati 888 SBK Corsa represents

The 888 was the next phase of Ducati’s 851-based Superbike program. Ducati’s retrospective says the 851 began as a 748 cc prototype, then grew to 888 cc through an increased bore. In 1992, the model name changed to reflect that displacement. The technical foundation Ducati identifies for the family was an L-twin with desmodromic distribution, a trellis frame, and a four-valve-per-cylinder Desmoquattro engine. Ducati Media House

“SBK Corsa” identifies a racing-oriented 888 rather than simply another name for every road-going 888. Ducati describes its racing division as developing competition motorcycles and customer versions for national championships, but that general description does not establish the configuration or ownership history of any particular 1992 Corsa. Ducati racing history

Who raced the 888 in 1992?

Ducati credits Doug Polen with the riders’ titles in both 1991 and 1992 during the 888 era. The manufacturer also lists World Superbike manufacturers’ titles in 1991, 1992, and 1993. Those results put the 1992 machine in the middle of a sustained championship period, rather than making it a standalone success. Ducati Media House

Ducati reports 78 wins and 170 podiums for the 851/888 family across 1990–1994. These are totals for the family over that period, not results for the 1992 SBK Corsa alone. Ducati Media House

How much power did the 1992 SBK Corsa make?

The cited official sources do not establish an exact specification sheet for the 1992 888 SBK Corsa, so its horsepower, top speed, and weight cannot be stated here as verified 1992 race-bike figures.

Ducati’s heritage entry gives specifications for a different, specifically identified motorcycle: the 1991 888 F91. That page lists 888 cc, 140 hp at 11,000 rpm, a 280 km/h top speed, and 142 kg dry. It also says the 1991 F91 won 23 of the 26 races scheduled in that year’s World Superbike Championship. None of those figures or that race statistic should be silently transferred to the 1992 SBK Corsa. Ducati 888 F91 heritage entry

How the Corsa differs from a road-going 888

The distinction is principally one of purpose and evidence: a road-going 888 was a public motorcycle, while an SBK Corsa was a competition machine or customer racing version. A specialist historical reference says an 888 was sold to the public in 1992, but that does not show that the road model and a Corsa shared an identical specification. Moto Collection

What the historical auction record establishes

Bonhams’ catalogue for its 2023 Spring Stafford sale documents an offering described as an 888 Corsa race motorcycle. This is evidence that such a machine appeared in that historical auction catalogue; it is not a current sale listing, nor does the catalogue reference alone prove the provenance of another bike advertised today. Bonhams

For a prospective collector, the model name alone is not enough to establish a specific bike’s identity. The available sources do not provide a definitive 1992 Corsa specification sheet or a universal provenance record; an individual machine’s documentation must be assessed on its own merits.
