Its high-output 2.2-liter engine was naturally aspirated; the Omni’s Turbo I option arrived for 1985, and the later Shelby Omni GLHS was a distinct model. Shelby American says GLH stood for “Goes Like Hell.”
What does GLH stand for?
GLH means “Goes Like Hell.” Shelby American’s corporate history credits Carroll Shelby with choosing the initials for the Omni GLH. The name captured the performance intent behind a quicker version of Dodge’s compact Omni hatchback.
What was Carroll Shelby’s role?
Shelby American places the GLH within the performance collaboration between Dodge and Carroll Shelby, which began after Chrysler chief Lee Iacocca asked Shelby to help restore Dodge’s performance image. Its retrospective calls Shelby the driving force behind the Omni GLH. That supports a substantial development and performance-image role, but does not establish that Shelby alone designed or built every production GLH.
What made the 1984 GLH different?
The key distinction was its high-output version of Chrysler’s 2.2-liter four-cylinder engine. A specialist history of the Chrysler 2.2L engine lists 96 bhp for the standard 1984 2.2L and 110 bhp for the high-output engine offered in the GLH. These are figures from that specialist reference; a factory specification sheet was not available to corroborate them here.

A secondary catalog identifies the 1984 GLH as a North American five-speed-manual configuration. Treat that as a catalog description, not proof that every surviving car has the same equipment. For an individual vehicle, check its documentation and installed components.
How does the 1984 GLH differ from the GLH-T and GLHS?
Model year and engine induction separate these versions. The 1984 GLH had the high-output, naturally aspirated 2.2L. The specialist engine history dates the Omni’s Turbo I option to 1985, the change commonly associated with the GLH-T name. The Shelby Omni GLHS came later as a separate Shelby in-house series.

| Version | Model-year distinction | What the cited histories establish |
|---|---|---|
| Omni GLH | 1984 | High-output, naturally aspirated 2.2L; the engine history lists 110 bhp, versus 96 bhp for the standard engine. |
| Omni GLH with Turbo I option | 1985 onward | The engine history places the Omni’s Turbo I option in 1985. Do not apply this distinction to the 1984 GLH. |
| Shelby Omni GLHS | Introduced in 1986 | Shelby American describes it as a later Shelby in-house series with Shelby-specific engine changes, including an intercooler and increased boost. |
The Turbo I timing and 1984 engine figures come from the specialist 2.2L engine history; Shelby American’s history supplies the GLHS lineage and changes. The later cars’ turbo and GLHS details should not be transferred to a 1984 GLH.
What performance figures are established?
The available sources establish the engine-output figures above, but do not establish a reliable 0–60 mph time, top speed, curb weight, production count, original MSRP, or period comparison-test result for the specific 1984 GLH. Figures for a later turbocharged GLH or GLHS would describe a different version, not fill those gaps.

Where can an owner look for service information?
A seller’s listing for a 1984 Dodge Omni Service and Repair Manual explicitly includes GLH among the covered trims. That listing identifies a potentially relevant owner resource; it does not establish factory authorship, current availability, or the manual’s quality. Check the listing’s exact coverage and format before relying on it.
