The 1974 Alpine-Renault A110 1800 Group 4 Works car identified as chassis 18393 is best known for finishing second overall in that year’s Tour de Corse. RM Sotheby’s describes it as a factory-prepared “Usine” car and one of nine Works entries driven during the 1974 season. Its story sits at a turning point: the A110 had secured Alpine-Renault’s first World Rally Championship manufacturers’ title the previous year, but the works team was turning much of its attention toward sports prototypes.

Which 1974 A110 Works car is this?

The title refers to a specific car, not just the A110 1800 Group 4 model: chassis 18393, body 6746. RM Sotheby’s 2016 auction record identifies it as a factory-prepared “Usine” Group 4 example and says it was one of nine Works cars driven in the 1974 season. Those are claims made in the auction record, rather than a model-wide count or specification. RM Sotheby’s lot record

What was its competition record?

Tour de Corse, 1974

Jean-Pierre Nicolas and co-driver Vincent Laverne drove chassis 18393 to second overall in the 1974 Tour de Corse, according to the auction record. That result is the clearest defining achievement attached to this particular car.

Later entries

The same record lists a 1975 Monte-Carlo Rally entry that ended in a DNF, along with several later 1975 results, including first overall at the Critérium Alpin. These entries show the car’s competition story continued beyond its Corsica podium; they should not be confused with its 1974 Works-season record.

How did the A110 1800 fit into the model’s development?

The A110 was a rear-engined Berlinette with a steel backbone chassis and fiberglass body, according to the FIA’s historical retrospective. The 1600S was homologated for Group 4 in 1970. The FIA describes a move from the 1600cc engine to a more powerful 1800cc unit for 1972, while Alpine’s retrospective calls the A110 1800 Groupe 4 a competition version using the largest engine used by the model. These are model-development facts, not proof that every A110 1800 had the same configuration as chassis 18393. FIA history of the Alpine A110 Alpine retrospective on the A110 1800 Group 4

For chassis 18393 specifically, RM Sotheby’s lists a 1,796cc engine and a five-speed manual transmission. Those figures belong to the auctioned car’s stated specification; they should not be generalized to every A110 1800 or Group 4 entry.

Why was 1974 a turning point for Alpine?

In 1973, the A110 won six of the FIA calendar’s 13 events, helping Alpine-Renault claim the first manufacturers’ championship. The FIA’s retrospective describes a different emphasis for the works team in 1974: much of its attention shifted to sports prototypes intended for Le Mans. The WRC season was also reduced to eight rounds during the oil crisis, while Fiat and Lancia provided stronger competition. Against that backdrop, chassis 18393’s second place in Corsica marks a notable result in a season when Alpine’s rallying focus and competitive environment had changed. Documented scale models are adjacent versions, not confirmed replicas of chassis 18393.
