Hagerty reports the R/T 440 could run 0–60 mph in about seven seconds and the quarter-mile in 13.9 seconds at 101.4 mph. Current price figures need careful qualification: Hagerty’s latest reported sale statistic covers the entire 1968–1970 Charger generation, not 1970 cars alone. Period brochure images are available, but individual photos should be checked before assigning a year or trim.
1970 Dodge Charger performance and engine choices
Power depended on trim and engine. Hagerty describes horsepower in period bhp ratings; the figures below should not be confused with modern net-horsepower ratings.

| Charger R/T, optional 426 Street Hemi | 426-cid V-8, 425 hp at 5,000 rpm and 490 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm | These are the historical specifications in Over-Drive Magazine’s 2024 fact sheet. Hagerty reports the engine as a 425-bhp option. [Over-Drive Magazine] [Hagerty] |
What the R/T’s performance figures mean
For a 1970 Charger R/T with the 440, Hagerty reports approximately seven seconds from 0–60 mph and a 13.9-second quarter-mile at 101.4 mph. These are historical reported figures, not results from a current test, and they do not describe every Charger or every R/T configuration. Hagerty says the Hemi was faster, but the consulted sources do not provide a directly comparable Hemi acceleration time. [Hagerty]

How unusual were the top engines?
Hagerty reports 112 Hemi buyers and 116 buyers who chose the 440 Six Pack. Those counts refer to the engine options as reported, not total production of a trim. Hagerty reports 49,800 Chargers produced for 1970. [Hagerty]

What changed in the 1970 Charger’s appearance?
The 1970 model received a modest styling update rather than a new body generation. The base Charger, Charger 500, and R/T gained a loop-style front bumper that surrounded the grille, with concealed headlights. The Charger 500 also dropped the previous exposed-headlight treatment and flush rear window. For period advertising and brochure views, the 1970 Dodge Charger brochure archive credits Gary Jones for scanning and sharing images from his collection; XR793 also hosts a five-page period brochure, “If you’ve ever finished first…you could be DODGE.”
What did a 1970 Charger cost?
Original option prices
Over-Drive Magazine’s 2024 fact sheet lists period option prices for a Charger R/T: $648 for the 426 Hemi and $287 for the 440 Six Pack. The same fact sheet gives $361 for air conditioning, $43 for power brakes, and $85 for power steering. These are historical option prices, not present-day values. It does not provide a complete new-car starting-price table for the base Charger, Charger 500, and R/T. [Over-Drive Magazine]

Recent collector-market context
In a report dated February 16, 2026, Hagerty’s statistics for the combined 1968–1970 Dodge Charger generation show a most-recent sale of $247,500, a highest sale of $3,300,000, a lowest sale of $5,768, and 1,200 sales. None of those figures is a 1970-only average or a quoted value for a representative 1970 car. The wide range makes a single headline sale especially poor as a stand-in for an ordinary example. [Hagerty]
For a meaningful comparison, match trim and engine first, then consider condition, originality, provenance, and the transaction date. Hagerty’s guide describes condition levels from concours through fair and says its valuation material is informational, not financial advice. A generation-wide figure cannot substitute for a valuation of a particular car.

Where to find photos—and how to label them accurately
The Hamtramck Historical Registry’s page is specifically titled “1970 Dodge Charger Brochure,” making it useful for period imagery and advertising. XR793’s hosted brochure offers another period source. Hagerty’s model page lists 51 photos for the broader 1968–1970 Charger generation, so a gallery image there is not automatically a 1970 car or a particular trim. Check the pictured vehicle and caption before calling it a 1970 R/T, Charger 500, or Hemi. [Hamtramck Historical Registry] [XR793 brochure PDF] [Hagerty]
