1957 Ford Thunderbird E-Code: Engine, Horsepower and Identification

The 1957 Thunderbird E-Code paired a 312-cubic-inch V8 with dual four-barrel carburetors. Here’s what its 270-hp rating means, where to check the data plate, and why reported production totals differ.

The 1957 Ford Thunderbird E-Code was equipped with a naturally aspirated 312-cubic-inch Y-block V8 and two four-barrel carburetors. The Classic Thunderbird Club International’s data-plate decoder lists its factory rating as 270 horsepower. E-Code identifies an engine option—not a trim level—and does not by itself prove that the engine now in a car is original.

What does E-Code mean on a 1957 Thunderbird?

E-Code designates Ford’s 312-cubic-inch V8 fitted with dual four-barrel carburetors. Ford’s retrospective on the Y-block describes dual-carburetor 312s among the engine options offered for 1957, during a period when the company was presenting the Y-block as a performance engine family. The E-Code was naturally aspirated; it was not the supercharged F-Code.

How much horsepower did the 1957 Thunderbird E-Code have?

The Classic Thunderbird Club International (CTCI) data-plate decoder assigns the E-Code a factory rating of 270 horsepower. That is a published period specification, not a measurement of a particular surviving or restored car. The reference material varies on the engine speed associated with the figure, so an RPM should not be attached to it without naming a specific rating source and convention.

How did the E-Code compare with other 1957 Thunderbird engines?

The E-Code was one of four engine choices listed in the 1957 specification reference. The choices differed in displacement and induction:

Code Displacement Induction Horsepower rating
C 292 cubic inches One two-barrel carburetor Not stated in the cited specification reference
D 312 cubic inches One four-barrel carburetor Not stated in the cited specification reference
E 312 cubic inches Two four-barrel carburetors 270 hp, per CTCI’s data-plate decoder
F 312 cubic inches Centrifugal supercharger Not stated in the cited specification reference

The distinguishing feature of the E-Code is the combination of a 312 and two four-barrel carburetors. The F-Code is the supercharged alternative, not another name for the E-Code.

How can you identify a 1957 E-Code Thunderbird?

Use the car’s data plate and chassis identification as starting points, then assess whether the installed engine and carburetors agree with the code. Visible dual carburetors alone are not proof of an original E-Code configuration: components and engines can be changed, and a car’s present condition does not establish its factory build.

  1. Find the data plate. The 1957 specification reference places it on the passenger-side cowl in the engine compartment, near the hood latch.
  2. Read the engine code. The plate’s engine code is the relevant clue; E corresponds to the 312 with two four-barrel carburetors. The reference documents two data-plate styles for 1957, with a later style introduced during April, so the plate’s layout may vary.
  3. Check the chassis number. The specification reference locates the serial number stamping on the right-front chassis rail. Treat this as a separate identification check, not proof on its own that the installed engine is original.
  4. Compare the present equipment with the code. A dual-carb 312 is consistent with an E-Code configuration, but documentation and inspection are needed to assess originality. A mismatch may reflect a later engine or component change.

How many 1957 E-Code Thunderbirds were made?

The published E-Code production figures conflict, and the cited sources do not establish a definitive factory total. Bonhams’ February 29, 2024 catalogue gives 1,363 E-Code cars out of 21,380 total 1957 Thunderbirds; a Mecum Auctions listing for a 2025 event gives 1,499. These are separately attributed published figures, not numbers to combine or average. CTCI’s data-plate decoder also lists 21,380 total 1957 Thunderbirds, but the available cited material does not resolve the E-Code discrepancy.
