The 1950 Ford F-47 was a Canadian-market Ford pickup, corresponding to the U.S.-market F-1—not simply an F-1 with a different name applied after the fact. The best-documented example in the available records had a 226-cubic-inch flathead V8, three-speed manual transmission and 6-volt electrical system, but those details describe that specific truck rather than every F-47. For an individual pickup, confirm its identity and equipment from its serial number, identification plate and condition.
What does F-47 mean?
Ford introduced its postwar F-Series in 1948. In a 2016 auction catalog, Mecum identifies its 1950 truck as a Canadian-built F-47 and names the U.S.-market F-1 as its equivalent. That market distinction is the key to understanding the designation: an F-47 is not a separate U.S. model, nor should a Canadian truck automatically be relabeled an F-1.
The related F-1 provides useful historical context, but it is not a substitute specification sheet for an F-47. Quatro Rodas describes the F-1 generation as having a redesigned, roomier cab with wider doors and a one-piece windshield, and says the U.S. model range offered a flathead V8 or inline-six. Those are descriptions of the related F-1 lineup, not proof that every Canadian F-47 had the same configuration. Quatro Rodas’ F-1 history also notes changes during the generation: the three-speed transmission gained a column shifter in mid-1950, with further styling and engine updates in later years.
What engine and equipment did a 1950 F-47 have?
Mecum’s 2016 catalog documents one 1950 F-47 with a 226-cubic-inch flathead V8 rated at 95 horsepower, a three-speed manual transmission and a 6-volt battery. Treat those as the recorded specifications of that auctioned truck, not a guarantee of factory equipment across all F-47s. The catalog does not establish a universal F-47 specification sheet.

#1 Best Overall
- 1:18 Special Edition. Detailed die-cast precision model. Large - approx 9.5" replica.
- Die-cast metal body. Opening doors and engine compartment.
- Full functioning steering. Four-wheel suspension.
- Detailed chassis with separate exhaust system.
- Mounted on plastic stand.
For comparison, Quatro Rodas describes F-1 engine choices as a 3.9-liter flathead V8 rated at 100 cv or a 3.7-liter six-cylinder rated at 95 cv. These are figures for the F-1 range as described by that publication; they do not verify the equipment of a particular Canadian F-47. Its detailed technical table is for a 1951 F-1, so its dimensions and specifications should not be transferred to a 1950 F-47.
Individual trucks may also have substantial later changes. A 2024 HiBid listing, for example, describes an F-47 modified with a 1950 Mercury engine, C6 automatic transmission, 12-volt conversion and disc brakes. Those components describe that modified vehicle, not factory F-47 options. The HiBid listing illustrates why the current equipment of the truck matters as much as its model designation.

How to identify and assess a specific truck
- Read the identification plate and record the serial number. Use the truck’s own identification rather than relying only on a seller’s description or a title that may use a different market designation.
- Document what is actually installed. Record the engine, transmission, electrical system and visible modifications. Do not assume the auctioned truck’s V8, manual gearbox or 6-volt system applies to yours.
- Compare the evidence with Canadian-market documentation. The available sources do not provide a full F-47 factory specification sheet or a complete F-47-to-F-1 parts interchange map. For factory-wide accuracy or parts decisions, seek documentation appropriate to the truck’s Canadian identity.
- Check compatibility before ordering parts. A catalog covering the broader F-Series or pickup generation can help locate candidates, but confirm each component against the truck and the seller’s fitment information—especially for a Canadian-built vehicle.
What restoration records and manuals are useful?
Start with a manual whose year range covers the truck, then check the listing’s edition and stated coverage. Early Ford V-8 Sales’ 2008 catalog lists a 1949–1952 F-Series truck shop manual described as 480 pages with more than 900 illustrations, and a 1948–1954 pickup chassis parts and accessories manual described as 656 illustrated pages. These are useful period-reference leads; their listings do not establish that every Canadian-specific detail is covered. Canadian supplements or other market-specific documentation may be needed.
- Early Ford V-8 Sales’ catalog lists the shop and chassis-parts manuals.
- National Parts Depot’s truck manuals catalog lists a 1950 Ford truck owner’s manual by model year.
- Midwest Early Ford’s 1948–1956 pickup parts catalog can help locate restoration parts; verify component-level compatibility before purchase.
- The Flat-Spot digital archive is another reference resource for early Ford material.
Mecum’s catalog describes its particular F-47 as having received a frame-off restoration and an oak bed floor. Those details are specific to that truck; they are not evidence of original equipment or a universal restoration approach.

How rare is the 1950 Ford F-47?
The available auction catalog calls its example rare but gives no production count. Without an authoritative production figure, a numerical rarity claim is not established. Treat “rare” as the catalog’s description of that vehicle, not as a quantified statement about how many 1950 F-47s Ford built.
