A car HUD can put speed, engine temperature, navigation, or phone directions closer to your line of sight—but “OBD2 support” and “smartphone support” are not the same thing. An OBD2 HUD reads information from the vehicle’s ECU. A smartphone HUD uses your phone for navigation, screen mirroring, CarPlay, Android Auto, or notifications. Only a few products combine both functions.
The list below separates those categories instead of treating every plug-in speed display as a phone-connected HUD. Vehicle compatibility also matters: an OBD2 port does not guarantee access to every data item, and GPS fallback provides speed and position—not RPM, coolant temperature, or fuel information.

The 12 best car HUDs
1. HUDWAY Drive — best overall for OBD2 and smartphone use
HUDWAY Drive is the most complete match for buyers who specifically want both phone connectivity and vehicle data. It uses a physical display, the HUDWAY Drive app, and the supplied Bluetooth OBD2 reader. The phone provides GPS and app functions; the display itself does not operate independently because it has no built-in GPS module.
The iOS and Android app can mirror navigation apps such as Google Maps and Waze. The included ELM327-based reader can provide speed, RPM, fuel consumption, fuel level, battery voltage, coolant temperature, and oil temperature, although the available parameters depend on the vehicle’s ECU. HUDWAY says another ELM327-based Bluetooth scanner may also work.

Connectivity is split between Wi-Fi for screen mirroring, Bluetooth Classic for audio, and Bluetooth Low Energy for vehicle data. The display is specified as a 1.8-inch, 480×240 LCD rated at 12,000 nits. Be aware that mirroring also mirrors calls and notifications, rather than presenting the filtered interface of CarPlay or Android Auto. Android navigation may lag after minimizing the app, and HUDWAY lists insufficient phone storage as another possible source of problems. Sloped windshields in vehicles such as certain Audi A3/S3, BMW 3/4 Series, Chevrolet Camaro, and Honda Civic models can also create fit issues.
2. HUDPLAY PRO — best CarPlay and Android Auto concept
HUDPLAY PRO is designed around wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto, while also claiming OBDII real-time speed, RPM, fuel-efficiency, and other vehicle data. That makes it one of the clearest choices on paper for someone who wants a dashboard HUD rather than a simple reflected phone image.
There is an important purchasing caveat: the manufacturer’s product page currently labels it Sold out. Check availability before treating it as an immediately orderable recommendation. The manufacturer also claims compatibility with cars after 1996 that have an OBDII port and suitable dashboard space, but that should not be interpreted as a guarantee that every car will expose every OBD2 parameter.
3. HUDScreen RoadView Max — best for connected navigation
HUDScreen separates its range into GPS Lite, OBD2 Pro, and RoadView Max. RoadView Max is described as a “Smart A-Pillar OBD2 + GPS HUD” and is the phone-connected, navigation-focused option in the lineup.

The phone displays a reversed image that reflects from the lens. This is why ordinary Google Maps and Waze output is not enough: HUDWAY says those apps do not normally provide the required reversed-image mode. You need a compatible HUD-mode app such as HUDWAY GO, HUD Widgets, Sygic, or Navmii.
The holder accepts phones up to approximately 158 × 77 mm. It works best at night, in rain, or in lower ambient light. Bright daylight can wash out the reflection, so phone brightness and lens angle require adjustment. Choose it when you want a cheap navigation reflection—not when you need OBD2 speed, RPM, or temperature data.

The LUFI X7 Track Pro plugs directly into the OBD2 port and focuses on engine information, configurable alerts, diagnostic trouble codes, and performance timing. LUFI lists more than 30 possible parameters, including turbo pressure, temperatures, oil pressure and temperature, fuel mixture, and performance-timer functions.
It is a serious standalone gauge rather than a smartphone accessory. The manufacturer does not state support for a phone connection, CarPlay, Android Auto, or a companion app. The displayed data depends on the car’s ECU, and LUFI’s current storefront generally targets gasoline and diesel vehicles from 2008 onward, although compatibility claims vary by market and product. Verify the exact vehicle before purchase.
6. LUFI X1 Race — best compact OBD2 monitor
The X1 Race is a plug-and-play OBD2 display with live engine data, configurable alarms, and the ability to read and erase diagnostic trouble codes. Listed readings include speed, RPM, engine temperature, battery voltage, fuel consumption, turbo or intake pressure, intake-air temperature, fuel trims, and throttle position.
Its compatibility wording is inconsistent: one section of the product page refers to approximately 2008 onward, while another mentions gasoline vehicles from 2001 and diesel vehicles from 2004. Do not rely on a universal cutoff. Check the vehicle and market-specific information first. No smartphone connection is specified.

7. LUFI XF — best customizable OBD2 gauge
LUFI XF is aimed at drivers who want to choose which engine values remain visible. It can show speed, RPM, coolant temperature, battery voltage, intake or turbo pressure, fuel consumption, fuel trims, oxygen-sensor voltage, and engine load. The seller says five display settings can show between four and nine items per screen.
The XF can read and erase check-engine codes, but deleting a code does not repair the fault that caused it. Oil temperature and outside temperature are vehicle-dependent. The cited product information describes post-2008 compatibility as typical, with selected earlier Toyota and Honda vehicles supported, and lists incompatibilities involving some older Subaru, Mitsubishi, Holden, and Ford applications. There is no stated smartphone support.
8. Pyle PHUD18OBD — best large budget OBD2 display
The PHUD18OBD uses a 5.5-inch multicolor display and connects through OBDII. It includes a windshield reflection panel and film, automatic ignition power, and a light sensor for brightness adjustment. Pyle lists speed, RPM, temperature, diagnostic icons, and other vehicle information.
It is marketed as a universal 12-volt OBDII HUD, but “universal” does not mean every car supplies every reading. Pyle does not list a smartphone app, Bluetooth phone integration, CarPlay, or Android Auto. It is therefore best viewed as a straightforward, larger OBD2 gauge—not as a phone-connected HUD.
9. ACECAR M7 — best when GPS fallback matters
ACECAR M7 supports two operating modes: OBD2 and GPS. OBD2 mode reads vehicle information when the car’s protocol is supported. GPS mode is the fallback for an incompatible OBD2 system.
The GPS mode can preserve basic driving information such as speed, but it cannot produce ECU readings such as RPM, coolant temperature, or fuel level. The package documentation lists the display, USB cable, OBD cable, non-slip mat, reflective film, and manual. No verified smartphone, CarPlay, Android Auto, or companion-app function is documented.

10. A8 5.5-inch OBD2 HUD — best for alarms and a large display
The A8 uses a 5.5-inch, five-color display and supports OBDII/EUOBD connections. Its manual lists speed, RPM, coolant temperature, battery voltage, fuel consumption, mileage, shift and fatigue reminders, low-voltage and high-temperature alarms, overspeed warnings, and fault-code functions.
After installation, synchronization can take up to one minute. Treat marketplace claims of universal compatibility carefully: independent testing of a similarly branded Dagood A8 reported warnings involving many French and Italian vehicles, hybrids, and diesels, along with possible windshield reflections and a loose dashboard mat. The A8 documentation does not specify smartphone connectivity.
11. VJOYCAR Hawk 2.0 — best dual-system coverage
VJOYCAR Hawk 2.0 combines OBD2 with GPS fallback. In OBD2 mode it can display ECU-provided information such as RPM, speed, coolant and oil temperature, fuel consumption, fuel level, voltage, trip data, and turbo pressure. GPS mode supplies speed, trip time, clock, altitude, satellite count, compass direction, coordinates, and acceleration or braking tests.
VJOYCAR claims support for gasoline, diesel, hybrid, truck, and passenger-vehicle applications. Still, the engine readings remain protocol- and ECU-dependent. GPS fallback does not turn the unit into an engine monitor. No smartphone support is specified.
12. Pyle PHUD19 — best simple GPS-only HUD
Pyle PHUD19 is the simplest option in this group. It uses GPS rather than an OBD2 connection and provides speed, compass direction, distance, trip time, voltage, and acceleration and brake tests on a 2.6-inch multicolor LCD.
It runs from the supplied cigarette-lighter USB cable, supports 9–16V DC operation, offers eight brightness levels, and can switch between MPH and KPH. Because it gets speed from GPS, it can work without reading the car’s ECU. That also means it cannot provide genuine OBD2 engine information such as RPM, coolant temperature, or fuel data. No phone connection is stated.

How to choose the right HUD
- Decide whether the phone is essential. For navigation, notifications, or a phone-based interface, start with HUDWAY Drive, HUDPLAY PRO, or RoadView Max. HUDWAY Glass is a cheaper reflection system, but it is not an OBD2 display.
- Choose OBD2 for engine data. OBD2 models can show readings such as RPM, coolant temperature, battery voltage, and fuel consumption—but only when the ECU makes those parameters available.
- Look for GPS fallback if compatibility is uncertain. ACECAR M7 and VJOYCAR Hawk 2.0 can use GPS when OBD2 communication fails. This preserves speed and trip data, not engine readings.
- Check physical installation space. Measure the dashboard, inspect the windshield angle, and consider whether the reflected image will overlap the road. A bright display can still be unusable if the reflection is double or poorly aligned.
- Verify the exact vehicle. Confirm model year, fuel type, hybrid status, and regional compatibility. OBD2 port presence alone is not enough.
Common HUD mistakes to avoid
- Assuming OBD2 means smartphone connectivity: conventional LUFI, Pyle, ACECAR, A8, and VJOYCAR units are standalone displays unless a phone function is explicitly listed.
- Expecting GPS to show engine data: GPS calculates speed, direction, and position; it does not read coolant temperature or RPM.
- Buying HUDWAY Glass for ordinary map mirroring: it requires a reversed-image HUD app. Normal Google Maps or Waze output will not reflect correctly.
- Ignoring notification privacy: HUDWAY Drive’s screen mirroring can show incoming calls and notifications.
- Treating a cleared fault code as a repair: erasing a check-engine code only removes the stored indication. Diagnose and fix the underlying problem.
- Assuming a product page proves availability: HUDPLAY PRO is currently marked sold out by its manufacturer.
FAQ
Which car HUD supports both OBD2 and a smartphone?
HUDWAY Drive is the clearest verified option: it includes a Bluetooth OBD2 reader and works with an iOS or Android app. HUDPLAY PRO also claims OBDII data plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but its manufacturer page is currently marked sold out. HUDScreen RoadView Max is marketed as an OBD2, GPS, and phone-connected model, though its exact current phone protocols should be confirmed before buying.
Can an OBD2 HUD work with every car?
No. A vehicle may have an OBD2 port but still expose different protocols or a limited set of data parameters. Compatibility can vary by model year, engine, fuel type, ECU, and market. Check the manufacturer’s vehicle guidance before ordering.
What is the difference between GPS and OBD2 HUD modes?
GPS mode calculates information such as speed, direction, time, distance, and position. OBD2 mode reads the vehicle ECU and may provide RPM, coolant temperature, battery voltage, fuel consumption, and fault codes. GPS fallback cannot provide engine parameters.
Is HUDWAY Glass an OBD2 HUD?
No. HUDWAY Glass is a passive reflective phone mount. It has no OBD2 reader or independent GPS. It requires a compatible HUD-mode app that reverses the image for reflection and works best in darker conditions.

The Bottom Line
For one device that genuinely combines phone navigation with OBD2 data, HUDWAY Drive is the strongest verified choice, provided your phone and windshield layout are compatible. Choose HUDPLAY PRO only after confirming that it is back in stock and that its CarPlay or Android Auto functions suit your vehicle. RoadView Max is another connected option worth checking carefully.
If smartphone features are irrelevant, the LUFI models offer more focused engine monitoring, while the Pyle PHUD18OBD and A8 provide larger budget displays. For uncertain OBD2 compatibility, ACECAR M7 or VJOYCAR Hawk 2.0 add GPS fallback. Just remember that a GPS fallback gives you speed and trip information—not the engine data that requires an active OBD2 connection.
