The strongest current comparison available here is AeroCorner’s 12-aircraft editorial ranking, published July 31, 2026—not a verified global consensus. It places the F-22 Raptor first. Because that comparison names 12 aircraft, not 17, this article does not invent five more entries or claim to rank them.
How to read a “best fighter jet” ranking
“Best” depends on the job. A fighter optimized for air superiority is not automatically the best choice for strike missions, carrier operations, air policing, or sharing information across a wider force. AeroCorner says its July 31, 2026 ranking weighs stealth and survivability, sensors and data-sharing, weapons reach, kinematics, combat record, and fielded numbers. That is the outlet’s editorial method, not an official standard, and the material available does not provide a reproducible scoring table.
The order below is therefore a report of AeroCorner’s assessment, not an independently established measure of which aircraft would win every matchup. Detailed, directly comparable evidence for all 12 aircraft is not established here, so the positions should not be read as a universal performance score.

Names and order are from AeroCorner’s comparison, published July 31, 2026. The list supplies a contemporary editorial shortlist, but the ranking material does not substantiate a complete technical comparison or establish that the ordering is authoritative.

What the ranking says about different roles
Air superiority and multirole capability are different strengths
AeroCorner puts the F-22 first in its ranking and distinguishes its air-superiority framing from the F-35’s broader sensor-fusion and networking role. That distinction is useful, but it remains an editorial assessment; it does not prove that either aircraft is best in every mission or matchup.
Lockheed Martin, the F-35 manufacturer, emphasizes the aircraft’s ability to gather, process, and share data. The company’s product page also displays “1 Million + Flight Hours and Counting”; it does not give an as-of date for that counter. Both the capability framing and the flight-hour figure should be understood as manufacturer-published claims, not independent comparative findings.
Typhoon illustrates why mission and configuration matter
The Royal Air Force describes the Typhoon FGR4 as a multirole aircraft used for air policing, peacekeeping, and high-intensity conflict. Its published maximum speed is Mach 1.6. The RAF lists AMRAAM, Meteor, and ASRAAM among its air-to-air weapons; this is a list of available weapon types, not a claim that a Typhoon carries them all at once. The RAF also specifies two Eurojet EJ200 engines, each rated at 20,000 lb thrust.
Rank #2
- IFF antenna array in front of the cockpit distinguishes this CCIP-equipped model from other F-16s.
- Curved form of the F-16 accurately reproduced with trademark Tamiya precision.
- Moveable horizontal stabilizers. "Flaperons" can be modelled in the up or down positions.
- Full ordnance load including AGM-88 HARM, AIM-120C AMRAAM, AIM-9M/X Sidewinder, ECM pod, and fuel tanks included.
- Centerline and inner wing pylons as well as tail assembly feature polycaps to allow easy detachment for storage.
Those are RAF-published descriptions and specifications for the Typhoon FGR4. They help explain one aircraft’s stated roles and published performance, but do not create a like-for-like comparison with every other jet in the ranking.
Why generation labels do not settle the comparison
Generation labels are shorthand for broad technological differences, not a complete scorecard. A 2025 House of Commons Library briefing describes upgraded fourth-generation aircraft as sometimes being called “4.5 generation,” and associates fifth-generation aircraft with features including stealth and more software-reliant systems. In its examples, Typhoon, Gripen, Rafale, F-16, and Super Hornet are fourth-generation aircraft; F-35, F-22, J-20, and Su-57 are listed as fifth-generation equivalents.
Those labels help orient a reader, but cannot by themselves rank aircraft with different missions, equipment, configurations, and operating contexts. The briefing is UK-focused; its dated fleet figures should not be mistaken for current worldwide totals.

Why this is a 12-aircraft list, not 17
The contemporary comparison identified for this article names 12 aircraft. It does not support positions 13 through 17, and no agreed global methodology establishes which five aircraft should fill them or in what order. Adding five names would imply evidence and ranking precision that are not established. A genuinely 17-entry ranking would need a disclosed selection method and comparable evidence for every aircraft.
For a broader fleet example, the House of Commons Library’s 2025 briefing reports UK Ministry of Defence figures of 137 Typhoons, of which 102 were in service, as of April 1, 2024. Those are historical UK figures, not current worldwide totals, and they are not a basis for ranking the aircraft.
