Its “10-year” milestone needs a date attached: Mazda unveiled the generation in September 2014, began production in March 2015 and identifies it as a 2016 model-year car. Those are three different milestones, not conflicting dates.
11 reasons the fourth-generation MX-5 still matters
1. It marked a clear generational turning point
Mazda unveiled the fourth-generation MX-5, known as the Roadster in Japan and the MX-5 Miata in the United States, on September 4, 2014. Production began in March 2015, while Mazda’s 2025 announcement describes the generation as starting with the 2016 model year. So it was revealed about a decade before 2025, but its model-year run began later. Mazda’s reveal announcement, production-start release and 2025 model-year announcement document those separate points.
2. Its brief was to modernize without losing the point
Mazda said the redesign had to respond to increasing expectations for safety features and environmental performance while retaining the fun it associated with the MX-5. The company summarized that goal as “innovate in order to preserve.” That is Mazda’s stated design brief, not an independent measurement of how successfully the car met it. Mazda’s production announcement explains the rationale.
3. It paired KODO design with SKYACTIV technology
In its launch-era materials, Mazda presented KODO design and SKYACTIV technology as parts of the fourth-generation approach. That combination matters historically because it shows the company framed the redesign as both a visual and engineering update—not as a change to the nameplate’s mission alone. 4. It arrived on the back of a substantial global legacy
The fourth generation was not introducing an untested nameplate. Mazda reported that cumulative MX-5 production had passed 940,000 units by July 2014, before the fourth-generation reveal. In its March 2015 production announcement, Mazda said the total had exceeded 950,000 by the end of January 2015. These are production figures for the entire MX-5 line, not sales totals or fourth-generation output. Mazda’s 2014 release and 2015 release give the dated totals.
5. The nameplate reached one million cars during this generation
Mazda announced that cumulative MX-5 production reached one million on April 22, 2016. The milestone belongs to the whole nameplate across its generations; it does not mean the fourth generation alone had reached that production total. Still, the timing placed the new car within a long-running story that had crossed a major threshold soon after its launch. Mazda’s announcement identifies the date and cumulative nature of the milestone.

6. It earned major awards in its launch era
Mazda reported that the MX-5 won both 2016 World Car of the Year and 2016 World Car Design of the Year. Separately, Mazda’s history page records Japan Car of the Year for 2015–2016. These distinct awards are evidence of recognition around the generation’s arrival; they do not establish that it is objectively better than newer cars today. Mazda’s one-millionth-car release notes the two global awards, and its 2015–2019 history records the Japanese award.
7. The RF gave buyers a second roof concept
The generation expanded beyond the soft-top format with the MX-5 RF, a retractable-fastback version. Mazda said production began in 2016 and that launches in North America and Europe were planned from early 2017. The RF made the generation more than a single-body-style story, although availability depended on market and model year; it should not be assumed that every trim or market offered both roof types. 8. The generation sustained interest in the MX-5’s design
The World Car Design of the Year award gave the fourth-generation shape a specific form of contemporary recognition, distinct from the overall World Car of the Year title. That makes its design part of the generation’s documented significance, without turning an award into proof that every observer preferred it or that its styling has universal appeal. Mazda’s 2016 announcement lists the award.
9. Its anniversary editions connected it to earlier milestones
Mazda later marked the nameplate’s history with a 30th Anniversary Edition in 2019 and a 35th Anniversary Edition covered in its 2025 announcement. These commemorative editions show how Mazda linked the continuing car to the MX-5’s longer heritage. They are anniversary products, not evidence of sales performance or a promise about future editions. Mazda USA’s anniversary retrospective covers the 30th anniversary, while the 2025 announcement includes the 35th Anniversary Edition.

10. It continued to represent a shared global nameplate
The car’s name varies by market: Mazda calls it the Roadster in Japan and the MX-5 Miata in the United States. The naming difference is a reminder that the fourth generation belongs to a global model history, even when its market-specific versions and availability differ. Mazda’s corporate materials use “Roadster,” while Mazda USA presents the U.S. name and history. Mazda USA’s history of the MX-5 Miata provides the U.S. context.
11. Mazda kept it in the lineup through the 2025 model year
Mazda’s December 2024 announcement presented a 2025 MX-5 Miata and described the fourth generation as dating to the 2016 model year. That establishes the generation’s continuity through the 2025 announcement, well beyond its reveal and production start. It does not establish 2026 availability or what a buyer will find in dealer inventory. Mazda’s 2025 pricing and packaging announcement is the relevant dated reference.

What “still important” does—and does not—mean
The fourth-generation MX-5 matters as a bridge: Mazda updated a mature nameplate around an explicitly stated mission, carried forward its design and technology themes, introduced the RF roof alternative, and kept the generation in the lineup through the 2025 model year. Its production milestones and awards give that history concrete markers.
Those facts do not by themselves settle whether a particular used or new-to-you Miata is the right choice. That depends on the exact market, model year, equipment, condition, price and intended use. The evidence here also does not establish a direct performance, reliability or value comparison with current competitors.
