Lamborghini began in 1963 with the 350 GT as its first production car. Its story runs from the mid-engine Miura and wedge-shaped Countach through the LM002 SUV, changing ownership, and a modern lineup moving to hybrid power. Here are 11 milestones, with the company’s own superlatives identified as such.
How Lamborghini began
1. Ferruccio Lamborghini founded the company in 1963
Automobili Lamborghini says it was established on May 7, 1963, in Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy, where the company remains based. Ferruccio had already built a tractor business and worked in heating and cooling systems. The company’s history calls the carmaker his “third successful business venture.” Lamborghini’s official history provides the company’s account.
2. The 350 GT was its first production car
The 350 GT was presented at the 1964 Geneva Motor Show and became Lamborghini’s first production car. It is easy to confuse it with the 350 GTV, but that earlier car was a prototype shown in Turin in 1963—not a production model. The distinction matters: the 350 GT marks the start of customer production.
Miura and Countach changed the shape of the story
3. The Miura helped define the modern supercar
Introduced in 1966, the Miura placed a 4.0-liter V12 transversely behind the cabin. That mid-engine layout helped make the car a landmark. Lamborghini describes it as its first supercar; that is the manufacturer’s characterization, rather than a universally settled industry designation. The name came from a famous Spanish bullfighting breed.

4. Countach began as an exclamation
Lamborghini’s history traces “Countach” to a Piedmontese expression of amazement, reportedly inspired by the car’s striking, angular shape. The LP500 prototype appeared in 1971; the LP400 entered production in 1973. The name is a rare case in which a model’s identity is rooted not in an engine, a place, or a bull, but in a reaction.
SUVs, owners, and engines beyond the V12
5. The LM002 came before the Urus
The Urus was not Lamborghini’s first SUV. The LM002 launched in 1986 with four-wheel drive and a V12 related to the Countach’s engine. The Urus arrived in 2018, and Lamborghini calls it the first “Super SUV.” That phrase is the company’s label for the Urus, not a claim that it was the brand’s first SUV.

6. Lamborghini changed hands several times
Ferruccio Lamborghini sold a majority stake in 1972. The company later passed from Chrysler to Megatech, before joining the Audi-Volkswagen Group in 1998. These changes in ownership form part of Lamborghini’s history alongside its model milestones; the name and factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese endured through them.
7. The marque’s engines were not always V12s
The V12 is central to Lamborghini’s image, but it is not the whole story. The company added the V8 Urraco in 1973, and later produced V10-powered Gallardo and Huracán models. Those cars broadened the lineup beyond its best-known engine family.

8. Centro Stile gave design a home inside the company
Lamborghini says it opened Centro Stile in 2003, during the Gallardo era. The company presents its design continuity as a core part of its identity. That in-house design center is one institutional marker of how styling became part of the brand’s identity, rather than simply a trait of individual models.

9. Racing grew despite Ferruccio’s reservations
According to Lamborghini’s history, Ferruccio did not believe racing was an effective way to promote road cars. The company later entered customer racing through Squadra Corse in 2015 and competed in Le Mans’ top class in 2024. That arc—from a founder’s skepticism to organized competition—is the company’s own account of its racing story.

10. Three current models mark a shift to hybrid power
Lamborghini says the Revuelto launched in 2023 as its first hybrid production car, pairing hybrid power with a V12. In 2024, the Urus SE followed as a plug-in hybrid SUV, while the Temerario arrived as a hybrid V8 successor to the Huracán. The company’s 2025 Environmental Statement describes its production range as fully hybrid; that is Lamborghini’s framing of its hybrid-powered lineup, not a statement that the cars are fully electric.
11. Lamborghini reported more than 10,000 deliveries in 2025
Automobili Lamborghini’s Environmental Statement 2025 lists 10,747 cars delivered, 187 dealerships, and 57 markets. These are company-reported figures from that document, and the PDF was not directly accessible for inspection; they should be read as figures attributed to Lamborghini, not independently verified statistics. Lamborghini’s company information is the manufacturer’s official source for corporate material.
