10 Used Performance Cars That May Be More Reliable Than You Think

J.D. Power’s VDS offers year-specific evidence for the Corvette, BMW 3 Series and Lexus IS—not a guarantee for every used example. Here’s how to assess those models and seven other performance-car candidates.

Some performance cars have encouraging dependability-study results, but no award can guarantee that a used example will be trouble-free. The strongest evidence here is limited to three nameplates: the Chevrolet Corvette and BMW 3 Series in J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS), and the Lexus IS in its 2024 study. The other seven are models to investigate, not cars proven reliable by the evidence cited here. Reliability can vary substantially with model year, engine, transmission, maintenance, use and the condition of the individual car.

What dependability studies can—and cannot—tell you

J.D. Power’s VDS measures problems reported by owners of three-year-old vehicles. Its 2025 U.S. study covered 184 problem areas across nine categories and surveyed 34,175 original owners of 2022-model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. The study reported an industry average of 202 problems per 100 vehicles (PP100). A lower PP100 means fewer reported problems in the study; it is not a forecast of repair bills, the odds that a specific used car will break down, or a guarantee about a different model year.

The 2025 result followed an industry average of 190 PP100 in the 2024 VDS, which covered original owners of 2021-model-year vehicles. The 2024 study reported 186 PP100 in 2023. These figures come from different vehicle cohorts, so they should not be read as a controlled comparison of the same cars over time. J.D. Power director of auto benchmarking Jason Norton said of the 2025 context: “Supply chain issues, record-high vehicle prices, and personnel disruption in the wake of the pandemic were problematic.”

Award categories also matter. J.D. Power named the Corvette a 2025 Premium Sporty Car award recipient and the BMW 3 Series a 2025 Compact Premium Car recipient. The Lexus IS appeared among model-level award recipients in the 2024 VDS. Each finding applies to its study, not automatically to every year, engine, transmission or used example carrying that badge.

Which 10 performance cars belong on a used-car research list?

This is a shortlist for further checking, not a ranking of ten proven reliable cars. The first three have the specific VDS evidence described above. For the remaining seven, the evidence available here does not establish model-year-specific reliability; their inclusion is a prompt to verify the exact car rather than a reliability claim.

Model What the evidence supports
Chevrolet Corvette Named a 2025 VDS Premium Sporty Car award recipient. The award is year-specific and does not certify every used Corvette.
BMW 3 Series Named a 2025 VDS Compact Premium Car award recipient. Check the specific model year, powertrain and maintenance history.
Lexus IS Appeared among model-level award recipients in the 2024 VDS. This does not establish the reliability of every IS year or configuration.
Subaru BRZ Candidate for model-year-specific investigation; no used-year reliability finding is established here. A Consumer Reports search result about above-average reliability in its 2026 new-car survey is not proof about used BRZ years.
Subaru WRX Candidate for model-year-specific investigation; no used-year reliability finding is established here. The same limitation applies to the 2026 new-car survey result.
Ford Mustang Candidate for model-year-specific investigation; no model-specific VDS reliability finding is established here.
Mazda MX-5 Miata Candidate for model-year-specific investigation; no model-specific VDS reliability finding is established here.
Toyota GR86 / 86 Candidate for model-year-specific investigation; no model-specific VDS reliability finding is established here.
Porsche 718 Candidate for model-year-specific investigation; no model-specific VDS reliability finding is established here.
Porsche 911 Candidate for model-year-specific investigation; no model-specific VDS reliability finding is established here.

Being included in a sporty-car segment roster is not the same as earning a dependability award. For any of these candidates, look for evidence tied to the particular year and configuration you are considering, then weigh it alongside the car’s records and inspection results.

What reliability issues should you check beyond the engine?

Mechanical condition matters, but electronics and everyday systems can also produce problems. In the 2024 VDS, infotainment was the most problematic category at 49.1 PP100—nearly twice the next-highest category. J.D. Power also reported 6.3 PP100 for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity. These are study-wide findings, not rates for any one car on this list, but they make a thorough technology check worthwhile.

Frank Hanley, J.D. Power’s senior director of auto benchmarking, said in the 2024 study release: “The average age of vehicles on American roads today is approximately 12 years, which underscores the importance of building a vehicle designed to stand the test of time.” For a used performance car, the practical implication is to judge the particular vehicle’s condition and history, not just its reputation when new.

How to evaluate a specific used performance car

  1. Pin down the exact configuration. Record the model year, generation, engine and transmission. Nameplates can span different powertrains and updates, so research the configuration you are actually buying rather than treating a badge as one uniform vehicle.
  2. Read the service and repair records. Look for evidence of routine maintenance and completed repairs, and ask about gaps in the history. Consider mileage and prior use in context; a performance car’s history matters as much as its odometer reading.
  3. Look for modifications and signs of hard use. Ask what has been changed, whether original parts are available, and whether the work is documented. Have the inspector assess wear and damage rather than assuming modifications are harmless or automatically disqualifying.
  4. Test electronics and controls. Check the infotainment system, phone pairing, displays, climate controls and driver-assistance functions fitted to that car. Confirm that features operate consistently, not just that the screen powers on.
  5. Inspect the mechanical and physical condition. Check the engine, transmission, tires, suspension, exterior and signs of accident damage. Tire wear or uneven condition can also be a reason to ask for a closer look at alignment and suspension.
  6. Arrange an independent pre-purchase inspection. J.D. Power recommends a professional inspection. Choose an independent mechanic familiar with the vehicle type, and ask for findings in writing before deciding. An inspection is a supplement to—not a substitute for—records and a careful test drive.
  7. Compare the costs with your intended use. Consider parts and repair costs, the inspection findings and how you plan to drive the car. A car that suits occasional spirited driving may not be the right choice for daily use if its condition or upkeep does not fit your needs.
