For a used sports car, “underrated” is best understood as a less-obvious alternative or a car that offers a useful mix of performance, practicality and value—not a guarantee that every example is a good buy. These ten US-market picks span roadsters, coupes, a hatchback and a sport compact. Their appeal depends on the individual car’s price, condition, mileage, trim, service history, insurance costs and how you plan to use it.
How these picks earn a place on the list
This is a comparison shortlist, not a measured ranking of the ten best cars. The choices reflect distinct driving and ownership trade-offs, with support from Kelley Blue Book’s buying guide, Edmunds’ used-performance-car recommendations carried by AP News on June 10, 2026, and iSeeCars’ 2026 used-sports-car rankings. iSeeCars says its overall score combines reliability, resale value and safety, drawing on data for more than 12 million vehicles and NHTSA and IIHS safety ratings; that publisher’s score is not a prediction of an individual car’s condition.
Price bands and model examples in those sources describe their own US-market context. They are not promises about current local asking prices in October 2026. Check comparable listings near you and compare the exact year, trim, mileage and equipment.
10 sports cars and performance picks to consider
1. Mazda MX-5 Miata: a light, open-top two-seater
The Miata suits drivers who put steering feel and predictable handling ahead of power or passenger space. Edmunds describes the 2019–2021 model as a 181-hp convertible with precise steering. For those years, it also notes the generation’s 26-hp increase over earlier versions and the addition of a telescoping steering wheel. iSeeCars ranked the 2023 Miata first in its under-$30,000 used-sports-car category and the 2025 Miata first under $35,000; it gave the Miata an 8.9/10 reliability score in its 2026 lists. That is iSeeCars’ rating, not a guarantee about a particular car. Edmunds warns that the cabin can feel cramped for tall drivers, so check seating position before buying.

2. Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86: compact rear-drive coupes
The BRZ and 86 are co-designed small coupes for shoppers who want a fixed roof and rear-wheel drive. Edmunds says the 2017 update brought output of up to 205 hp, along with revised gearing and suspension tuning. iSeeCars ranked the 2020 BRZ first in its under-$25,000 group and included BRZ among its under-$30,000 leaders. Compare the two twins by condition, equipment and local asking price rather than assuming one is always the better deal. Edmunds says the Toyota 86 is often slightly cheaper, while BRZ Performance-package versions add upgraded brakes and suspension. The rear seat is very small and is more useful for cargo than regular adult passengers.
3. Chevrolet Corvette C6, 2008–2013: V8 performance with a basic cabin
The sixth-generation Corvette is an option for drivers seeking substantial V8 performance and highway comfort. Edmunds reports up to 430 hp, rear-wheel drive and strong braking in its June 2026 used-car guide. Its under-$25,000 framing is that article’s market context, not a guaranteed price today. The trade-off is an interior Edmunds describes as low-rent; prioritize maintenance records and have the car inspected rather than shopping by power or asking price alone.
4. BMW 2 Series M235i and M240i, 2015–2018: compact performance with more comfort
These six-cylinder variants combine quick acceleration and balanced handling with the comfort for longer trips that Edmunds highlights. Edmunds lists 320 hp for the M235i and 335 hp for 2017–2018 M240i models. Earlier M235i examples were easier to find below $25,000 in the article’s June 2026 market context, but that threshold is not a current-price guarantee. Verify the car’s equipment and maintenance history, and consider whether its small rear seats work for your needs.

5. Volkswagen Golf GTI, 2015–2019: performance with hatchback utility
The GTI is a useful alternative to a two-seat roadster or small coupe when daily usability and cargo space matter. Edmunds describes this generation as a four-door hatchback with entertaining handling and up to 228 hp, depending on year and equipment. It recommends looking at SE or Autobahn trims for features that include upgraded brakes and a limited-slip differential. Check the exact car’s trim and equipment: not every GTI has the same power or features.
6. Chevrolet Camaro: compare the exact year, body style and trim
The Camaro belongs on a value-minded shortlist because iSeeCars includes the coupe among its top used-sports-car reliability listings under $30,000 and the convertible among its under-$30,000 leaders. Kelley Blue Book also includes a 2019 Camaro among under-$30,000 examples. Those category listings do not establish a best generation, trim or current local price. Research the specific year and configuration you are considering, then judge the car on condition and comparable nearby listings.
7. Ford Mustang: a widely available coupe or convertible comparison
The Mustang makes a useful comparison point because buyers can shop both coupes and convertibles across the budget bands in iSeeCars’ 2026 lists. iSeeCars ranked the 2023 Mustang coupe first in its under-$40,000 reliability category and included Mustang convertibles in multiple budget bands. These are year- and category-specific rankings, not a verdict on every Mustang or an individual used car.

8. Audi TT: a compact coupe or roadster option
Kelley Blue Book includes 2016–2018 Audi TT examples in its under-$20,000 used-sports-car suggestions. The TT gives shoppers a less common compact coupe or roadster to compare with more familiar choices. The listing is not proof that a particular TT is reliable, inexpensive to maintain or available at that price locally; inspect the car’s history, condition and likely ownership costs.
9. BMW Z4: a roadster alternative to the Miata
Kelley Blue Book includes 2011–2016 Z4 examples in its under-$20,000 suggestions. It is worth comparing for shoppers who want a two-seat roadster and are also considering a Miata. Evaluate comfort, condition and running costs on the specific car; KBB’s example listing does not establish that every Z4 is reliable or cheap to maintain.

10. Hyundai Elantra N: a sport compact, not a traditional sports car
The Elantra N broadens the list beyond conventional coupes and roadsters to include a performance-oriented compact sedan. Kelley Blue Book includes 2022–2024 examples among its under-$20,000 used-car suggestions. Consider it if you want a more practical performance car, while recognizing that the category is broader than a strict sports-car definition. The cited examples are not a promise of local availability or price.

What to check before buying a used sports car
Price the actual car, not the model name
Compare local listings with the same model year, trim, equipment and similar mileage. A ranking or sample budget listing can help identify candidates, but the car’s condition and asking price determine whether a particular example makes sense. KBB reports, attributing the underlying data to parent company Cox Automotive, that high-performance and sports cars can lose as much as half their value in the first two or three years. “As much as” is not a guaranteed depreciation curve for any model on this list.
Check history, maintenance and modifications
- Review a vehicle history report and available service records.
- Look for deferred maintenance, neglect, accident history and heavy modifications.
- Arrange a professional pre-purchase inspection when appropriate, particularly if records are incomplete or the car has been modified.
- For a Corvette C6, give documented maintenance history particular weight.
Edmunds’ advice in its AP-carried article is: “Do your homework by avoiding cars with obvious deferred maintenance, neglect or heavy modifications.”
Test-drive for fit and daily use, not only speed
KBB recommends assessing acceleration, cornering and braking in legal-road conditions, as well as ride comfort, seating position and ordinary usability. If the car has a manual transmission, check clutch take-up and gearbox operation. Make sure you can sit comfortably, see clearly and use the car as intended; a spirited drive cannot answer whether it fits your routine.

Budget for ownership beyond the purchase price
Include insurance, fuel, maintenance, registration and tax, and depreciation in your budget. KBB’s buying guide also identifies safety systems, fuel economy and fit as factors to weigh. Costs differ by car and driver, so get insurance estimates and assess the particular vehicle rather than assuming a sports car’s asking price represents its full cost.
