Use the exact configuration, not just the model name
One truck name can cover multiple engines, trims and drivetrains, and their fuel-economy ratings can differ. The EPA and Department of Energy warn that models often come in a range of engine sizes and trim lines. When looking up a truck, match the model year, engine, drivetrain and trim as closely as possible; a model-wide range is not a substitute for a configuration-specific rating.

Start with combined MPG, then consider your driving
The EPA’s combined estimate weights city driving at 55% and highway driving at 45%. That standard helps compare vehicles on a common basis, but it is not a promise of what you will get. If most of your miles are on highways, compare the highway rating for the exact configuration; for frequent stop-and-go driving, look at its city rating as well as the combined figure.
Match efficiency to the work the truck must do
A fuel-economy figure alone cannot tell you whether a pickup fits your needs. Before choosing on MPG, check the payload and towing ratings for the exact truck and configuration you are considering. A compact pickup such as the Maverick may be a sensible place to start if its size and capability meet your needs; shoppers who need a full-size truck should compare the full-size models against their actual hauling and towing requirements rather than assume a smaller truck is an equivalent substitute.

What the listed MPG says—and what it does not
EPA fuel-economy estimates are standardized comparison figures, not guaranteed real-world results. Driving conditions, load and the particular vehicle configuration affect what a driver achieves. The 2026 guide’s 55% city and 45% highway weighting describes how combined MPG is calculated, not how any individual owner drives.
Fuel economy and greenhouse-gas ratings also have different boundaries. The EPA says its greenhouse-gas rating reflects tailpipe CO2 and excludes emissions from producing and distributing fuel. It should not be read as a measure of a vehicle’s full fuel-cycle emissions.
