The Renault Twizy is an electric urban quadricycle that combines a tiny footprint with tandem seating, open sides and plug-in charging. Its “45” and “80” versions are substantially different, and published range figures describe different kinds of estimates—not a single guaranteed distance.
1. Its two seats are arranged in tandem
Unlike a conventional two-seat car, the Twizy puts one occupant behind the other. Renault describes it as a two-seat urban quadricycle, with rear-wheel drive and a length of 2.33 metres on its heritage page. Renault The Originals’ Twizy overview
2. “45” and “80” mean different speed-limited versions
The names refer to distinct versions, not trim levels with the same performance. Renault lists the Twizy 45 at 45 km/h and 5 hp, and the Twizy 80 at 80 km/h and 17 hp. Which version suits a trip depends not only on speed but also on local licensing and road-access rules.

These specifications come from Renault’s heritage page; legal requirements are jurisdiction-dependent. Renault’s manual says the vehicle’s classification and rules for licences and road use vary by country, so a rule that applies in one market should not be treated as universal. 3. Its range figures depend on what “range” means
Renault’s heritage page quotes about 100 km of city range. A separate Renault Germany release from 2023 estimates about 80 km in city driving and about 50 km on hilly interurban roads. The first is Renault’s approximate heritage-page figure; the latter are route-specific real-world estimates, not a guarantee for every Twizy or journey.

Renault Germany says actual range is affected by driving style, speed, outside temperature, terrain, payload and electrical equipment. A short, flat urban trip and a hilly faster route are therefore not comparable conditions.

4. A domestic socket can charge it in about 3.5 hours
Renault’s user manual gives about 3.5 hours for a full charge from a domestic socket. It also cautions that range varies with charge level and driving style. Treat the charging time as the manual’s approximate figure, rather than a promise for every socket, battery condition or charging circumstance. Renault user manual
5. It has both a traction battery and a 12-volt battery
The traction battery supplies the electric drive; a separate 12-volt battery serves equipment such as lights and wipers. Renault’s manual describes a 58-volt traction circuit and warns that electrical components can remain hot after the ignition is switched off. It prohibits owner interventions or modifications to the vehicle’s electrical system, including the traction battery, and directs owners to an authorised dealer.

6. The sides are open, and equipment varied by configuration
The Twizy’s body is open-sided. Renault’s historical materials describe optional doors or transparent protective side screens, so equipment should be checked on the individual vehicle rather than assumed from the model name alone. Archived specifications also describe a driver airbag, a four-point front belt and a three-point rear belt for a specified configuration; they do not establish identical safety equipment for every market and model year. 7. The Cargo version traded the rear seat for storage
Twizy Cargo replaced the rear passenger seat with a lockable cargo compartment. Renault’s archived German material gives a capacity of 156 litres, while Renault The Originals describes a 180-litre trunk. 8. Renault urged drivers to account for how quiet it is
Renault’s manual notes that the motor can be difficult for other road users to hear. It recommends staying alert and using the horn, particularly in built-up areas or while manoeuvring. 10. Renault announced production would end in 2023
In a dated press release published July 17, 2023, Renault Deutschland said Twizy production was scheduled to end in September 2023. That release reported 33,340 vehicles sold across 55 countries through June 2023; those sales totals are tied to that reporting cutoff, not a lifetime total updated to today. Renault’s heritage page also contains a “production continues” sentence, but that undated wording conflicts with the dated 2023 announcement and should not be read as confirmation of current production.
